Welcome to Engineering Hack! Today we have a theory video. That's right. Only theory, no problem. However, this is more a video with tips than a video with theory. While we do talk about the definition of both internal energy (U) and enthalpy (H), the idea here is to assist you when trying to decide which one to choose. Internal energy is the sum of all the microscopic energies within a substance and can be understood as a simplification of these forces. A ideal fluid at a high temperature, for instance, has higher internal energy than one at a lower temperature. This is intuitive, but actually measuring this quantity of energy is paramount in thermodynamics, because the internal energy is a state property - so it can be used to find a whole other lot of properties. Enthalpy, in a similar way, is also a state property and it happens to comprehend the internal energy, since enthalpy is defined as the internal energy plus the flow energy (PV, pressure times volume). In this video we talk about the difference between the two, about tips on identifying and distinguishing them, about different scenarios where you can find a hint of which to use and we finish off with a rule of thumb that just might save you when solving a problem for an assignment or an exam. Let me know if you have any questions.
