Absolutely Dr. Black &Prof. Hunter. I have never before really observed Juneteenth. I always kind of felt like it was a Texas or Southern thing and I didn't take the time to understand it. Yesterday I went to a Juneteenth event at Chicago's DuSable Museum. Outside were families and groups of friends buying from food trucks and vendors, or grilling their own. Inside were groups of young and old friends, elders, and parents showing and discussing with their children the displays highlighting our struggles and triumphs. Tears were shed at the Emmit Till exhibits, inclusive of that honest and brutal photo of that precious baby's face. And then I reconnected with a wonderful sister who I had known when our sons were young. I had a very soul enriching day all around. It reminded me to always connect, never forget and NEVER surrender.

When Dr. Black explained the actions associated with Juneteenth the holiday suddenly had a real meaning. This then should be the focus of how we move forward. Everytime Dr. Black speaks the ground shifts beneath my feet and suddenly I discover I can fly. Lol.

I currently live in a county that commemorates Emancipation on September 22. The date Lincoln issued the warning that the enslaved, in rebellious states, would be freed on January 1st. This fact lead to Watch Night on Dec 31st. Anyone tradition remember here. Then the in gatherings (reunion) then community building. And it is this, the community building, that I focus on and I had the honor of presenting to raising high schoolers, on June 19th, attending our County’s summer Law Camp. I discussed Galveston but focused on the local history as it related to the freedom journey. Each year I discover new ways to relate and share the significance of Juneteenth.

The Dr. Black is very right about our Ancestors looking for their families between 1865-1870. Those of us who are our family's historians see it in the 1870 Census how they gathered and stayed in the same households. We are still looking for our families!

I didn't leave the house on June 10th. I set and thought of my ancestors and cooked a meal. I knew people were going to be celebrating, and someone was going to get shot. It was in my spirit that this would happen, and I don't know why others didn't feel this.

This conversation proves sis Hunters point. Juneteeth should not be a federal holiday. In my opinion the oppressors won with this decision. Just imagine all the racists get a paid day off to be more racist or even go out to find someone black to do with what they use to do back in the day. And don't say its not happening. Black people go missing every day. Juneteenth should be spent looking for missing black people.

I hear you, and I receive what you're saying, and I also accept a sentiment that I heard about Juneteenth that I appreciate, it says that... now that it is a Federal Holiday, no one can say the word without acknowledging that it is a reference to 'slavery.' With all the "WOKE" bans going on, and ppl being prevented from talking about Black History or systemic racism, Juneteenth, will be a constant reminder of the history that some Americans would try to erase...js

@Dr. Black's comment a federal holiday of "mourning" sadly reminds me of the 1981 drowning of three 19, & 18 year young men (Steve Booker , Carl Baker and Anthony Freeman) under plainclothes law enforcement custody at a Juneteenth celebration which began in 1930's in Mexia, Texas - the 20 acre Black owned property hidden away from the Klan has lost its reunion significance -"help me find my Black Family " awakening and coming together to free us from further bondage is what this respite should be for the "red, black, and green, if you think about it you know what I mean" (Roy Ayers, 1973)

I agree with you, Karen. I struggle with the same issue: everyone is off like it is a day in the park, so everyone gets to go. Additionally, no one read the documents to get the details and as they say, "The devil is in the details," which were not provided when the announcement was made. Why? Because the now "free enslaved" could not read anyway, so they only told part of the story to the slaves. I did not celebrate, and wish while they are banning and repealing laws, Juneteenth should be one of the them. I think like Smokey Robinson I am black American not African American b/c we are too far removed from Africa, IMO.

Alot of holidays Americans celebrate were taken from other cultures and co opted to suit european tastes. Halloween, valentine's day, etc in order to enforce conformity. It's hard to see anything productive coming from this.

It appears as though WE need to establish for US how to commemorate this transitioning phase in OUR history. Although, I knew about Juneteenth in DC where I grew up there was no one around me who did anything to mark the occasion. So, I think these first few years for those of US outside of Galveston and Houston, TX, have to 1: know what we are actually commemorating and 2: create the ritual(s) including what Dr. Black discussed. It's an evolution like Kwanza and Dr MLKjr Day.

...I love y'all, but I have to give some push back on the last statement of Dr. BLACK, nobody Black or white, sends their kids to college to become an entrepreneur, even most of the wealthiest people iN the world dropped out of college to pursue those ideas, and they're mostly trust fund babies, which they use for investment. @KarenHunterShow tye only issue is to create jobs and industry you need revenue. You would either need to get contracts from white people or sell stuff to white people. Both which have hurdles for obvious reasons. 95% of black businesses have 1 employee for a reason.

@divinebynature7056 there are always exceptions to the rule. I believe at last count we get under 2% of contracts. Even a state like GA where we are 35% of the population. Part of why we can never address the real problems is we don't identify the issue or pretend it's not an issue.
