Not sure about it I feel we need big physical players Because we always get bullied in aerial duels and on corners… One or two is fine But if we have Gomes then that’s amad, licha and Gomes in the team who won’t exactly help in the air as much. Licha is good but the other two may really struggle unless they are put solely on set pieces. But even then fernandes is not a physical monster when challenging in the air and while ugarte is decent in the air he’s not exactly elite. But id love to see Gomes back, it’s just room for thought.

Football isnt just about physical size, look at Bernardo Silva, D Silva, Mata, Scholes etc as good examples in the epl. Man utd doesn't have alot of technical players, especially in midfield. If we can get him on the cheap then yes, but I'd also want to see Fletcher, Gore etc get a run of games too.

Gomes would be brilliant if we had a manager who wanted to keep a lot of possession as a form of defense like a Guardiola. But in this chaos ball style I rather fear someone of Gomes' size and speed will get overrun and he will not be utilized with his best abilities in mind.

It might also be the case that we play so much chaos ball because we don't have players that are able to control the tempo. If we had Angel in the #6 we might go long and direct when it's apropriate and we might build up more slowly when this approach is the better option. I think there was some quote from EtH just a few days ago about how he had identified a few things he wanted the team to improve on this season. And one of those things was controlling games. So maybe Gomes could be just what he's looking for.

ETh's idea of controlling the game is by winning the ball back through aggression in press and going direct again to create chances that subsequently pins the opposition very close to their box, giving the utd players acres of space to do the same thing over and over again. Gomes just isn't that guy because he would kill the attack time and time again with holding on to the ball too long to set the tempo and can neither carry the ball as elite as kobbie would nor quickly play direct killer/risky passes as frequently as Bruno would. Though under a different manager, we'd have him.

Not really: if you take the case of Rabiot, he wants a personal signing-on fee and a big wage, which could make him as expensive in the long run as Hojlund. Same would probably apply to Gomes.

I remember him as a more advanced attacking midfielder. I can't believe how he's developed so well into a tempo-setter in a deeper role. Those are my favourite types of players. Reminds me of a less defensive version of Verratti, who I also loved watching.

Excellent analysis. I thought it was a little weird to see him playing as a deep-lying playmaker at Lille but I soon realized how perfect he was. He’s the midfielder that people said England can’t produce: the Xavi, Pirlo, Verratti, just overall regista type of midfielder, which has been true. Credit to the Lille coach at the time and the current England coach for believing in him and seeing his true potential

We've been missing a midfielder like this since Carrick retired. I think Vitinha is an even better example, and another incredibly underrated player, but he'd likely be too expensive, so I think Gomes would be a great option. I think people keep misprofiling Mainoo, tho. Gomes should be playing next to Mainoo, not instead of him. Mainoo is a proper box to box midfielder. He has strength and stamina and is a great ball winner. On the ball, he is also more useful higher up, as he is a little careless in deep areas, and isn't the type to dictate the tempo of the game with 100+ passes like these players are. This was said in the video. Ugarte and Mainoo can rotate next to a proper intelligent, controlling deep midfielder like Gomes. This leaves us with a perfectly balanced midfield finally. There are worries about his height and lack of physicality, but I think technical ability and intelligence are more important tbh, and something we massively lack.

my reservation with Gomes is his defensive workrate but then again this is a downside of always looking at pockets of space where you'd be out of position to defend in transitions. this means his partner in the pivot would have to work harder or anchor the backline. I would honestly prefer a regista who can also defend given our current circumstances in the midfield being vulnerable as is.

Luka modric, mesut ozil, andrea pirlo, Andres iniesta, xavi, veratti... there are plenty of examples of small players dictating midfield. Why not angel gomes... Luka modric and ngolo kante took a while to get noticed due to their size as well, yet it does not diminish their legacy.

last night, there was 2 or 3 moments where finland countered and he got slightly behind the play and just got left. Now imagine him in a united game where those transition moments happen 10-15 times a game. In transition, dont see it, box defense and aerially, really doesnt help either, pressing sure, but theres better player for pressing by a long margin. In posession hes a dream, OOP I think he'd be a liability.

I think he'd only be highly effective in a style that dominates the ball for 70% with slow build up and high control. Not a large space defender at all, not a good carrier, set piece and box defending liability and this is assuming hes as effective in the prem despite the physicality upgrade. I think he's a luxury player. Stunning in settled posession, but that's about it, a liability most other times.

Imo Angel could be a really good deep lying playmaker for us. My only issue is that we probably can't play him next to Mainoo, unless one of them plays as #10. It kinda feels like a little bit of a waste to have too many midfielders that are great at some things but lacking at other things. But maybe Mainoo would become more allround with time and he could play as more of a ballwinner as well. I would really like to se Angel back at United though, and him being on a free should probably mean it's a pretty risk free transfer.

In my opinion, yes united should re-sign him. He'd be a solid no.10 since he has a decent playmaking ability. However, I do feel united should sign a no.8 to cover for or start ahead of mainoo. Along with gomes, united should sign quinten timber as well. He'd be a solid no.8. A trio of gomes, timber and ugarte with mainoo, collyer and maybe gore for the future. Bruno's a senior figure so he'll still have a role to play.

And if I'm not mistaken, Bernardo Silva currently plays as a No. 10 or as a winger and has done so for as long as I can remember, even during his Monaco days. The only one you might have a point with is Scholes, but wasn't he notorious for being terrible at tackling and winning the ball back, especially during a period when the league wasn’t packed with many physically dominant, technical players, aside from Vieira? It’s no coincidence that Arsenal’s midfield was often one of the few we struggled against. As a DM or CM, you need to have some physicality about you. You can’t be 5'6" and under 60kg, especially in a physical league like the Premier League. And before you bring up Kante or Makelele-yes, they were indeed short DMs, but both had ridiculous engines, were quick, and physically strong. Can you say Angel has any of those attributes? And if you're being honest, can you really see Angel tracking a strong runner like Wolves' Cunha and putting in a last-ditch tackle, or winning a header against West Ham's Soucek? Listen, I've got nothing against the guy, and I think he has a lot of potential. I just don't think he's what we need in the deeper midfield positions. (EDIT) Do you remember that midfield of Coquelin, Ramsey and Corzorla? Yeah they played nice football in possession but there were times they just got bullied.
