Should My Dad Buy a Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe?

My Dad currently drives a Hyundai Tucson to support his V12 Vantage, but when joining Mercedes at the press launch of the new AMG GLC 43 Coupe I had to ponder whether this would make a good upgrade for him.
Some will have noticed this was accidentally posted ahead of time, due to a scheduling error on my behalf but here is the full video for you of my drive in the sporty SUV in Portugal.

This is not really an AMG car, they will have a proper GLC63 with the 4.0 V8 The GLC43 is just a normal GLC with higher spec and slightly more power, without many other enhancements Hence passive exhaust, loads of bodyroll, mediocre performance AMG lettering is just for marketing purposes, previously they had "AMG sport" line which wasn't successful so they renamed it into 'proper' AMGs

Dmitry L Same thing is done by others. For example, with M performance... although an AMG engine isn't the only thing that makes an AMG an AMG. There are many other enhancements. Think of it as getting *part* of the full AMG package.

MrCarGuy20 Well, at least with BMW they say M240i or M50d or something. Yes, there is some "M" letterings and so on, but they don't call these cars proper M cars. Same with Audi, S3 is quite different from RS3. So they only use M and RS branding for their most capable versions When Mercedes were doing their "AMG Sport" it was like that as well (so fair), but now they are calling C43/GLC43/E43 and so on proper AMG cars when they are not, just to attract more customers in the short run

Actually the previous Mercedes Sport models only had engine and some body enhancements while the new entry AMG models have more than just engine and body, they also have exhaust, transmission and suspension upgrades that are from the higher end full AMG 63 models. Just like BMW M Series, you are right that they have been using M Spec for some time now while Mercedes just added *50 to the end of their models. The 43 models are historical as they were around before so Mercedes is just offering that option again since the V6 Engine is tuned by AMG also since they come with not just more hp but also Nano coated cylinders which are not found on the lower model of the class.

Don't forget with a "proper" AMG you will also have to spend another $40,000. For the money, these are very nice. I'm considering getting one myself.

rockie071 yes, I know proper AMGs are much more expensive By the way, I do recommend checking out the Porsche Macan first I was in a similar situation earlier this year, bought the new C-class coupe and after I had to take it back to the garage 3 times within the first two months of ownership (first, the bootlid supports failed, then the sunroof blind got jammed, then issues with crappy comand system), I sold it and bought a similarly priced Porsche instead. No issues so far, super happy with it, much more fun to drive and better thought through car. Nothing against Mercedes, some of the cars they are making are brilliant, but you have to be looking at the top of the range to get a proper one (e.g. S-class or proper AMG cars). The mid-sized ones (A-class/C-class/GLA/GLC/etc) are just not that great: not great reliability, not as well thought through as competitors. Also, check out the new Q5, haven't seen one yet but the reviews were quite positive

no way....get a real truck not a fake coupe blob....it has the worst of both worlds. no room, poor handling because its not a real sport coupe....Get an audi q7 or q5/ bmw x3 or get the get the "sedan" GLC variant.. IF your dad wants to spend big money get the macan GTS which looks proper and can give that vantage v12 a run for its money...also consider the MDX for full practicality reliablity and decent speed

NO SHMEE DON'T DO THIS! We had a brand-new C43 AMG for 4months and just sold it yesterday, and get us a CLS63. The 43'amgs are nice and working good, but it is just not a real AMG! You should buy a real 63 amg. And just think about the sound of a V8 compared to the smaller V6. Kind regards

I'm sure the GLC is dynamically good but man, these 4 door CUV "coupes" are ugly. There are no cohesive exterior design lines. And its NOT an SUV because SUVs are built on a truck chassis and have 4x4 low range. The GLC is a CUV. If he wants an AWD truly sporty vehicle that can carry people, get the new Panamera 4S/Turbo.

A tucson is a "sports" SUV? I think you'll find that the tucson is more about commuting on motorways (in comfort) and going off road (without breaking your back) than being a driver's car. Sure, it has twin exhaust pipes and some models do 0-62 in 9.5 seconds, but it's not very engaging to drive.

U are probably went too much into your super car world and lost a bit of track with Mercedes and BMW how much they have improved SUVs. U should try X6M or GLE coupe 63 AMG for example and u will understand how great those cars are in terms of everyday family use with lots of super car possibilities. I own few cars including those super cars u test often here but if u ask me what car I love to drive every day with no stress but with practicality is X6M not Ferrari , Lambo, Aston or Porsches.

Hey shmee, not that I don't like the Benz but has your dad ever thought of comparing the benz to the BMW suv, (X6 I believe sorry forget the exact model) cause that might be an alternative way of getting a luxury/multi-terrain SUV than the benz unless he'd rather have the benz over the bimmer. I like everything about it, besides the aesthetics. It looks like a C class that ate too many Christmas cookies and became quite fat. I think that if he is looking for a crossover-y type of vehicle, he should look into the Porsche Macan/Cayenne models. Maybe a BMW X5 as well (Not the X3, that looks like a 4 series who ate too much as well).

Before your Dad buys a Merc. he / you need to drive the 2017 Macan GTS. I just took delivey of the Macan and its awsome all around super sport suv with a much cleaner updated interior hands down. The screen looks like an after market install for a vehicle in this price range.

These type of cars looks so crap. It´s not sporty enough to be fun to drive. It´s not got the ground clearance to be good off road. And not enough headroom in the back for passengers over 1.50. And not a good boot space either. Overpriced, ugly shit cars actually.

Like the BMW X6 it's not ugly, but utterly useless. It's a huge car with little useable space and it's a suv with way too big and sporty tires to actually do offroad. It's nice but extremely unefficient and unpractical. I know supercars are too but they at least are supercars haha

Did he buy one? If not, consider the 350d instead. I reviewed the GLC Coupé (250d) in October, good looking car that can handle twisty roads with stability. However, the 250d is kind of slow, it lacks an edge, 220d is even worse (boring). The edge is available in the 350d (an engine I drove when I reviewed the ML 350 CDI back in 2014) with decent fuel milage too. Then you add the BRABUS exhaust and you are all set!

Personaly I prefer the jaguar f-pace or the Porsche Macan. They cost about the same but are slightly better looking (to my taste). The glc looks a bit weak compared to its competition.
