being in the arena at the time of the adam johsnons incident it all just went so fast one minute petgrave goes in for a body check and the next the arena fell silent. to watch the players have to scream and shout at off ice officials to get any medical help at all was awful the whole incident was hard to watch. since last saturday you cant go online without seeing the video again and again like it doesnt replay in your head in every second of silence. im sure i wasnt the only one refreshing twitter every second of that night hoping for good news

The question about neck guard is risk management, like in taking insurances. We should estimate the probability of the occurence and the seriousness of damage when it happens, the risk evaluation is the product of these two estimates. In this case the probability of occurence is very low, but the seriousness of damage is potentially worst possible, like in this very sad event in UK hockey. But is it still reasonable to force all players use those guards to prevent worst possible scenarios, would you pay for such insurance? I probably wouldn't. Maybe it would be best for every player that they can decide for themselves, optional usage instead of obligatory?

There was an incident in a High School hockey game on Long Island that is getting some attention on social media. In 2017, Jake Karant crashed into an opposition player who was trying to get down the ice with the puck. Both players went down on to the ice, but the opposition player's skate slashed his neck. Luckily, Jake was wearing his neck guard that day. The cut on his neck missed an artery by 2 mm. If he wasn't wearing his neck guard, Jake would have died. He got stitches on the wound and returned to the ice just 10 days later. So yes, I think the NHL as well as every single league on the planet should be making neck guards mandatory. I heard the EIHL decided not to do that according to a news article from Sky News in the UK. In my opinion, that is very boneheaded and insensitive of them to do that and they need to do better immediately. NO ! This happens so so so rarely. It should always be on the player. I play goalie.... I use one about 25% of the time. When I grab it. But again. It is so so so rare. Visors.... I also hate. When I skate out I love it when again it is on me to choose. (Two less teeth now. ) LOL

Yes, they should be mandatory. There's this bullshit macho thing surrounding neck guards that needs to go away. Introducing them into all professional hockey leagues will potentially save lives and drive development of them to make them less bulky and uncomfortable. I am a big Formula One fan and there was a huge push against firstly the HANS (head and neck safety) device and latterly the Halo, but both came in anyway and both have absolutely saved drivers from serious injury or likely death. Any kind of device that can prevent even one tragedy is worth it. Plus it's not exactly going to affect us as viewers of the sport if players are wearing them. There have been too many close calls in the NHL with skates up around the neck and head area. Not learning the lesson from Adam Johnson's death will just mean that - sooner or later - the clock will run out on someone else too and everyone will stand around wringing their hands wondering why nothing was done the first time. It's a total no-brainer.
