Which is funny because he kind of sucked as a president. It's a wonder the north won the civil war because none of his generals would even follow his orders until he got Grant, someone who was perpetually drunk and had zero regard for the lives of his men. Then of course Lincoln was praised for "Freeing the slaves", which he didn't. He would've kept them in chains if it meant preserving the union, he did not give a single fuck about black people or their rights, nor did he have the authority to just free them. Congress did that, and they only did it in southern states. Slavery still existed in the north after the civil war ended, but that part is conveniently left out of most history books because it doesn't fit the propaganda as cleanly.

To be fair, there is a huge argument to be made that Abraham Lincoln was the first president to actually successfully achieve the nation the founding fathers envisioned. He was the one who made America a country, not just a collection of states, he solidified the power of the federal government, and he truly established that *all* men were created equal (although we would have to wait a few more decades for all *women* to be included). The founding fathers left a lot of ambiguity in the constitution about slavery, about federalism, and about what it means to be an American. Abraham Lincoln was the one forced to solve that enigma. The founding fathers may have made America, but Lincoln was the one who made it America.

@@conversationtosaurusrex They didn't need to predict 200 years into the future they needed to set up systems that wouldn't lead to as many of the massive issues we structurally have today. There are so many parts of the constitution and general policy/practices they put in place that with even a little forward-thinking would point out how utterly broken they could be. Washington didn't like the idea of political factions/parties garnering the bulk of power but they didn't set anything up to tackle that issue so we have had a duality throughout most of u.s. history. Just a straight-up lack of trying to prevent a problem he foresaw. The Electoral College was created so that southern states could get more power through counting slaves. But that is a faulty system even for the time. The u.s. was to be the "land of the free" yet slaves were still a thing despite that hypocrisy being pointed out. But after that, they fought and advocated for democracy but the Electoral College is a messed up Republic-style system. It was un-equally distributing voting power since slave-owners got more than anyone else. And as a republic you are supposed to vote on individuals you trust to vote on issues you don't understand, but the EC only votes on a representative and don't have to vote for who you told them to. It actively spits in the face of everything america supposedly stood for and caused more issues than it could ever solve and that should have been noticed. There is an inexhaustible list of both inaction regarding issues they knew about, and then a list of actions they took that should have easily been seen to be horrendously stupid. They don't need to have foreseen the internet or anything, but there are plenty of faults inherent to our system instilled by their lack of thought.
@conversationtosaurusrex4 жыл бұрын
@@haruhirogrimgar6047 I am not saying it is flaweless but for its time, it was game changer. Considering the checks and balances system has lasted over 200 years ago, obviously something was done right. The electoral college thing is a controversial topic but for their time, they wanted to potentially ward off the more populated states having more control over the smaller less populated states. The Representatives are given to those with the most votes but of course there are still problems. There are plenty of faults yes, but plenty of Good things such as considering the rights of the people first before of the Government.

In Denmark we legitimately have something similar to this. In danish folklore there once was this hero of myth called Holger Danske/Ogier the Dane. Like another commenter said, we surrendered in less than six hours and the country was occupied by the nazis from 1940 until the war ended. Because we didn’t really put up a fight, the Germans let us stay mostly autonomous throughout the war. As long as we complied to their terms there wasn’t any trouble. This was very much the case until August 1943 when the government refused to do anything to combat the growing resistance, and the Nazis subsequently dismantled the government and put the king out of power. After that they started rounding up the danish jews (only 500 out of 7000 were caught, the rest was smuggled to Sweden) and in 1944 the danish police force was taken out and 25% of the officers was sent to the concentration camps. Phillip Not to mention that parties are basically unavoidable due to our human nature. When you have people grouping together over shared interests, you got a faction or essentially a party who is more interested in the interests of their party rather than the country as a whole. George Washington is pretty naive if people say he wanted no parties at all. What he meant surely is that to not have the partisan spirit that only drives wedges of division between members in the government and society. Sure we have to pay her taxes, and of course there is the "Prima Nocte Law", or the right of the lords to have sex with a woman subject on her wedding night.
