Big fat NO. Nothing is more "cringe" than seeing videos of people parading their "exotic" pets around, especially primates, wild felines, etc. Bad enough it's this common on KZbin to see, but god forbid someone says a swear in their video or discusses serious but daily topics. 100% ban it + raise the punishment for smuggling and abuse already.

I'm glad I live in a country, where you aren't legally allowed to buy a monkey without a license. Social media really has brought the worst out of people and will have a huge impact on the animal world and rescue organizations.

Social media hasn't just negatively affected animals, but the world itself. Social media is the most destructive creation since the atomic bomb. I'm not being hyperbolic either. There hasn't been a single creation in the past 75 years that's done more harm to this world than Social Media. It truly brings that ABSOLUTE worst out of people.

I'd be willing to bet you'd have more freedoms to aquire a monkey, legally without a license than you realize. And requiring licensure does very little to reduce the black market trade or prevent bad owners from becoming legally licensed. Social Media ALSO brings out the best. There are many social media channels that supply good educational information on what its like, what to expect and how to care for. Honestly say who and why you shouldn't have a pet monkey. This alone will reduce the amount of people that would otherwise make an uninformed decision and end up unable to properly care for and ultimately abandon. Social Media is also the primary resource for raising money and awareness for primate rescue centers. Unless you're advocating for some kind of euthanasia, we still need good people to put pet monkeys in the best possible situation. If you only want to acknowledge the worst people, then the worst is all you'll find.

@@joshriver75 My country has animal protection law. This comes with a catalogue of every animal imaginable and what requirements you must have to obtain such an animal. Having a monkey in your living room in a bird cage is never a legal option here. Sure you can somehow import one illegally and have the luck to not be caught when you cross borders. But also then you needed food, equipment and sometimes a vet. And that's where your bubble would burst. Pet monkeys is, gladly, no issue in my country. And no, SM channels showing these animals and telling what their downsides are, sadly don't repell the viewers. Many only see a cute video, or see a clip of the video without narration. Or don't listen to what is said and only see the cute animal. Or simply think "Well but I can do it better". That's why these comment sections are full of people who want to buy one themselves. And it's a huge difference, if a rescue center shows their primates in actual habitable living conditions and raises awareness and funds, or if people have a pet monkey in their living room and then tell others "But YOU shouldn't, because it's a bad idea. WE on the other hand CAN have one, because WE are better than you are". This was never something that held anybody back. They just show "its technically possible, the monkey is cute" and yeah they also talk a bit about downsides, but people who would actually be alarmed by downsides, wouldn't even consider getting one in the first place. If this couple actually cared for raising awareness, they'd have given the monkey to a place where it could live under proper conditions. And then support this place.

In that same boat, humans aren’t made for a huge society like most of ours. We have only evolved to interact with dozens of Same individuals… not thousands of strangers every month. However we still thrive, enjoy life and survive. We drink poison for kicks and jerk off to sooth our baser instincts. We aren’t much less wild then this animals. Yet we can function in a civilization. So can wild animals. Of course it depends on the animal, however after a few generations of captivity they can become just as adaptable as humans. Really it doesn’t matter what kind of environment an animal survives in. As long as they survive and pass on their genes that is the natural course of evolution. If Their feelings and current instincts are a detriment, the ones without will survive. Simply put subjective sentiment of good and bad makes no difference on an evolutionary scale. Matter of fact, in terms of evolution raising animals in a city preps them for the coming future of industrialized world where only animals that exist are kept for entertainment and food. Your argument is based on sentiment rather then logic and it’s utterly idiotic. It provides no logical reason as to why not raise animals at home… both the animal and the human benefiting. Human for their twisted desire of cute things and the animal for evolving in an environment that will be the dominant one in the future. At the very least it gives their species chance to survive.

Yes they're cute, beautiful, intelligent and I'd want one as well the way some of them are being portrayed on the internet. I don't believe that anyone should be able to have any kind of exotic animal whether it's a primate, tiger or reptile etc. The primates aren't little people in fur coats and eventually it'll turn nasty when they reach sexual maturity. They're either stolen from the wild, and kept for breeding and then the babies sometimes only hours old are stolen from their mums which is psychologically damaging for mum and baby.

Every monkey/primate owner I've seen likes to dress their money up in toddler clothes and treats them like babies. I've seen owners having empty nest syndrome wanting another child as they're too old, or those strange people that like to have real-life-looking dolls; younger people in their late 20's early 30's having a monkey for a flex. Primates, especially males, are cute when they're younger but once they go through puberty they become dangerous with these hormones. It's not fair to the animal to live in conditions they're not meant to be in. When I see these videos I find the owners being selfish, they do it for them and their ego or their need to care for the animal, but it's just not meant to be.

Great comments about why people own monkeys and how they treat the monkeys. I once saw a video from a woman who owns a male Capuchin monkey. The owner's mother came over and went on and on talking to the monkey in super-high-pitched baby talk that nearly had my ears bleeding. I had to stop listening. That poor monkey having to be subjected to that abuse albeit unintentional. In another video the owner came back from the beauty shop after going from almost platinum blonde to dark brunette. The monkey saw her changed appearance, flipped out, having some kind of monkey hysteria, and actually bit the woman. I think the monkeys fangs had already been removed. If they hadn't been it would have been far worse. Elsewhere someone in a comments section made the observation that if you walk down the street with a dog no one particularly notices, but if you walk down the street with a monkey you get lots of attention. Owning monkeys as pets for enjoyment (if you enjoy changing diapers for 35 years) is selfish and egotistical and is destructive to the monkey.

There's a difference between owning a pet and owning a wild animal. Parrots don't need humans to survive the same way a domesticated dog does. I mean *technically* you can keep any animal as a "pet" but you can't really domesticate them to the extent that you can a dog or livestock.
@tacitozetticci9308
@tacitozetticci9308 2 жыл бұрын
Parrots are a very special case though. They're 100% wild but they're so naturally social that the domestication works (if you're prepared) Of course birds are ultra expert level pets and only a tiny fraction of the population should keep them. Crucial point: parrots fly, period. That means that if you're not respecting that DAILY need, you're seriously putting their physical and mental health at risk. Clearly that's wrong and cruel, and it defeats the purpose of keeping the animal as a pet. But if everything is done right, you're actually giving the parrot a good, safe and loving life that's nothing like the horrors of the wild. It's also something that their lifespan will multiply threefold. Pets and people are good for eachother (if done right) especially for children. I wouldn't be the same person without my childhood pets, no doubt. It's an excellent exercise for love and care, and you'll also learn about the other side of the medal: responsibility, commitment, neglection. Become great caretakers and introduce your children to a pet, people! (A parrot owner)

As a child, I used to read and re-read Jerald Durrell's books, and these were a huge influence, an education into wild animals needs. Of course they are no longer a manual of zookeeping, after all, he would be almost a hundred years old if he was still alive, however, that look into the reality of taking care of exotic animals is still relevant because it describes the reality of facing wild and captive animals. I remember, his family actually used to keep some small monkey, and Durrell describes not only the highs, but also the lows and difficulties, including health issues, which they had to deal with. AFAIK, he is a pioneer of modern approach to zookeeping (breeding programmes, suitable environment and proper food, animal comfort etc. - animals as creatures first, entertainment second). He was against exotic animals as pets for same reasons as described in this video.

Domesticated animals are perfectly fine as pets as long as you care for all their physical and emotional needs. They’ve been bred for thousands of years to be our companions and have been adapted to that life by that selective breeding. Exotics and wild animals are NOT selectively bred for captive life, and it’s a terrible, stupid, and selfish idea to attempt to keep any. Primates are particularly poorly suited for pets. They are highly intelligent, require a specific diet, are extremely social, very active, and have a long life span. It’s impossible to replicate their normal habitat and social structure in captivity, so at best you end up with an aggressive, unpredictable, and mentally and physically unbalanced animal for 40 years. Not to mention the exotic pet trade is cruel and destructive.

These been domesticated over thousand of years. these pets are accustomed to a human life. and can live care free with us. other animals have a higher need then most humans can give them. so im agains it, for the greater good of the animals. but as professionals that rescue animals is a hole other specter. and i want them to continue to help animals. well thats just my opinion. have a great one all of you.

Before you decide to buy a baby primate, just remember that it's mother who these babies love and depend on had to be killed in order for you to satisfy your stupid, selfish need to have so you can brag to your friends about. It's cruel. When I watch this video I felt so sorry for this poor animal--it is an animal ya know. He looks sad. He should be with HIS family. Not a human family, living in a cage. Whether primate or any other animal, it disturbs me how little research a lot of people seem to do before getting pets. You can't keep a goldfish in a bowl, you can't keep a betta in a jar, you can't keep huskies in 30°C heat, you can't keep little short-haired dogs outdoors, you need to clean your cat's litterbox clean and give her things to scratch, you can't keep a parrot alone for most of day, you can't keep rabbit in a hamster cage, and you can't keep marmosets alone in a cage that would barely fit four rats (no, really -- my rats had bigger cage than poor Jerry, and *they* could be outside for couple hours each day). Marmosets need to be in small groups and need enclosures big enough for a couple small trees.

The idea of pets came from humans right? I don't think nature intended for us to do most of what we have done so to me the answer is no and it's also no to having animals as pets at all. None of the creatures including us were meant to do anything or be anything than what our genetic make up and Instincts told us to do. but with saying that nature didn't know what humans would turn out to be and how we would be able to break the mold and create more than what this planet could do on its own. Us choosing to domesticate animals to have as pets created the argument of whether some pets should really be pets or left as wild animals. It was all us. Humans. We have created most of our own problems. :)

Nature doesn't "intend" anything, so that's kind of irrelevant per se. Peace, non-violence and prohibiting rape are unnatural things, so what? Screw nature in that case lol, we don't want it. But anyway countless species by now have been influenced to live with us down to the genetic level. For those, life in the wild is actually what would be "unnatural".

We literally raise our primate children. If we can take care of human children then we can take care of animals. The problem might be that the word "pets" can be a bit derogatory. You wouldn't have pet primates.. you would have adopted family members of a different species. I've seen people take great care of primate pets. However, overall.. I don't generally trust people as pet owners for any species. I've seen a lot of dog owners abuse their pets and underfeed them. I've heard pet owners say that their pets don't have feelings and that they are "just animals" as if they are lesser creatures. I believe that humanity as a whole has an entirely wrong opinion on what consciousness is.. and the very notion that consciousness as we talk about it is a real thing hasn't even been proven (our belief stems from our desire to be better than other creatures). Both answers are right and wrong, and people don't like answers that aren't ideal. We should and shouldn't have pets. This should and shouldn't include primates. If I were to choose then I would allow primates as pets a long with many other restricted or controlled species. My reason is that we don't want a restrictive society and a lack of restrictions creates more experience, more content, more opportunity. It adds to the world whereas restrictions take away from it. But say you want to ban primates as pets or pets overall and I won't argue against that either. There's no right or wrong answer. Either way works. I feel like one way would add to the world though. An increase in demand for animals generally results in more being born. That means more animals get to experience life. Exotic pets would increase demand and create breeders. Just like demand for animal products such as meat and dairy has resulted in those species having a far greater population than they ever would have (not an ideal means to increase population and controversy rises when neither solution is ideal).

Think about it, all this trouble and these are only the small monkeys... What more the apes? Gibbons or bonobos or chimps?? Honestly, the one animal I'd be most terrified of is the chimpanzee. Imagine a small human, with very similar emotions, moods but at about five times the strength. There have been some absolutely awful cases of chimpanzees just going beserk and tearing off people's faces, maiming them or worse. Even in the wild, chimpanzees are terrifying, they hunt smaller monkeys, sometimes cannibalise the young of other chimps - rival tribes. Its all fun and games to see someone pet a monkey or a slow loris but just don't buy or even support these people. I mean, the people featured in this video are relatively responsible and they say that its incredibly hard. I'd bet my bottom dollar that there are tons of essentially farms out there that poach monkeys from the wild, make some videos, make some money and then when the monkey dies, just go out to the wild and get another like they're picking up fruit at the market... Don't buy wild animals. If you wanna see them, go to the zoo. Or better yet, go to out into nature and see if you can spot them in their natural habitat. Worst comes to worst, David Attenborough has you covered. Just watch some of his marvellous documentaries.

Simple fact, all primates or monkeys are part of the animal kingdom. Through the one gift of intelligence, humans have domain over all animals. Opposable thumbs don't make monkeys any more valuable than a cow, dog, bear, or even a feline of any kind. Some people do enjoy having them as pets, but anyone can look anywhere in the world and see, from medical labs to Asian temples, humans will use or abuse them for the entertainment or advancement of the human race.

People think animals want to be "free" but animals don't really understand that concept. All animals care about is safety and food. Captivity gives them that. They don't want to have to roam all over to find food and shelter. All animals, like humans, would rather live in a society of sorts that caters to their needs. So yes, animals should be kept in captivity to keep them safe and from extinction.
