Should artists retire on top or continue until they fall off? DJBooth’s Yoh (@yoh31) wrote an article a few weeks back discussing this topic. While in Los Angeles, we hooked up with Justin Hunte "The Company Man" (Ambrosia for Heads) and Justin Styles (All Def Music) to lend their thoughts on the topic.
What are your thoughts? Let us know what you think after watching the video in the comment section.
This video was shot at the Studio71 soundstage in Burbank, CA.

Rappers should just do what they want. Listeners should just do what they want. If you don't like their new music, just don't listen. Doesn't taint the old music. I think there is too much weight put on bad music tainting someone's legacy. Just let them do their thing and listen if you like it.

I think alot of the time people fall off cause they do wats the new wave and leave wat their fans loved about them and the production they rap on in the garbage. If a rapper does wat THEY want we'll more than likely be happy. Tribe came back and said fuck all that trap shit thats hot now. We still gon do US. Michael Jackson has never followed a wave more than 20% since Off the Wall and we got dope content from it. Artists DO U.

My issue with the whole "stop before you fall off is this: where do we draw the bottom line? Ken's example with Ice Cube is one I can use: Cube's peak lasted three albums, but before he completely fell off, he gave us two more good albums: The Predator and Lethal Injection. Those albums are good, but definitely not up to par with his older music, should he not have made them and just stopped after Death Certificate? What about Nas? Even he knows he'll never top Illmatic, but he gave us more amazing albums afterwards. Should he have stopped after just one album and never given us anything even slightly less? It's much too subjective IMO, and I think some people demand too much of artists sometimes.

It's not always about better. It's about an artist still having something to say about the changing world. Maybe later albums are just for the Stans but it's selfish to say they should stop releasing music.

yea this question doesnt really have an answer which is why it's an interesting conversation, it's just a matter off opinion. i do think it's kinda pretensious to tell a rapper when they should stop tho, who are we to say when they should stop, if they still feel like making music they should keep on making music. i mean what other options do they have? they gotta eat.

Dre I think has more in the tank, I just think he's a perfectionist and living in fear of not living up to his previous work. The man probably has classic albums in the vault. Em should've quite after Eminem Show, like he said on Till I Collapse, "And when your run is over, just admit when it's at its end," Em has been at that point for like 15 years.

NamesAreOverrated It had some pretty good songs on it, but it wasn't a good album. He has moments of brilliance, but they're fleeting. His music suffers largely from horrible hooks, bad production choices and what seems to be a lack of real substance at this point. Granted he has a new one coming out soon, but Walk On Water doesn't bode well imo.

Eminem - I saw an article recently that said less than 20 albums have EVER lasted more than 300 weeks on the Billboard 200. They said only the most beloved artists and only their most loved works manage this. Pink Floyd's Dark side of the Moon was the longest by far and yet Michael Jackson's Thriller (bestselling album ever worldwide) just made 300 weeks this summer. I think in many ways a "classic" is one that CONTINUES to be consumed by new generations. Back to Eminem, he owns 3 of the less than 20!! They are Curtain call, The Eminem Show and RECOVERY. Hip Hop heads hate on Recovery or at least don't consider it one of his best projects but it made the list in 7 years and he still rapped his ass off. I liked MMLP2 (most of it) but it still put's him personally 1 album off a classic. I don't think album sales set the standard and I don't think twitter should either. Music is about emotion of all kinds so if I'm enjoying how I feel I'm going to rock with you, even if what ur saying isn't new.

Lupe Fiasco is the perfect example. Lupe was about to retire in 2008, just after releasing Food & Liquor, and The COOL. He was going to bring out a 3rd album, called LupEND, and it was going to be a triple album. That would have been a better way to leave hip hop behind. But instead, the label forced him to make 3 more Projects. Lasers (trash), Food & Liquor II: TGARA (mediocre), Tetsuo & Youth (great album, but wasn’t recognized because of the previous two mediocre projects.) Lupe could have retired legend status, but that status was tampered with just because he couldn’t fade away on while he was still on top of his game.

artists SHOULD retire on top but the fans won't let them. this culture in hip hop of "staying relevant" vs "falling off" has too many dudes over-staying their welcome. fans ultimately want to see their idols fall off to be able to say, "oh he's just like me. he fails too". it's the same in sports. that's why floyd mayweather was so successful. he always kept the mystique of being unbeatable and retired on top so fans felt cheated like, "there's no way. surely he can fail too". but he never did so the fans want him to keep going until he fails so then they can be satisfied.
@TheKondinho
@TheKondinho 6 жыл бұрын
the point i was making was that people prefer to see a good comeback story. a good comeback story can only happen if failure is involved. also a comeback story gives the average person hope as opposed to a flawless run which seems more unattainable. hope that makes sense.

Honestly, I think it's a selfish for fans to demand artists to quit. It's not just for you, it's for themselves, and the other people who still want it. You don't have to like it, you don't have to listen. Artists should be able to decide when they can quit. It's entitled to tell others to stop making their own music.

@kevindelaet6001 6 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with an artist saying "I given y'all enough". Offcourse their prime is behind them at some point but you will always have songs over the years that you really love of a project. It should be seen as a sport. Don't retire when you're 25 retire when you 45 and you been trying your best to have longevitity. Being a true artist comes with ups and downs. I love artists who have a high work ethic

Artists should do whatever they want, releasing for them, not us. I'm not gonna expect artists to suddenly stop sharing their raps if they still use it as a mode of expression, nor should they continue to release music if they feel like they're done. It's not the artist's job to worry about their legacy, that's up to us.

The music and culture should grow with it's audience! The culture is still growing, but so are the people who represent it. There's always going to be young artists and that's fine, but life doesn't stop in your thirties and forties. The music should reflect the life-space of the artists and the audience that appreciates their work will gravitate to them! Look at Rock and Roll. Hip-Hop needs to grow the same.

“Every artist has thousands of bad drawings in them and the only way to get rid of them is to draw them out.” -Chuck Jones This isn't to say that I will listen to a rapper's "bad" album. However, if they definitely still have the energy and they have something to say, who am I to judge them to say what they want? Ultimately, I think it's the artist's choice if they want to stop or keep going, not the listener's.

First time seeing Justin Styles and I liked the points he brought up as well (specially on Lil Wayne's influence). Keep it up DEHH! Respect and appreciation from Ethiopia

This is what hip hop needs. Organic conversations about topics that really impact music culture. And collabs between great hip hop minds. I love Xzibit for example but Napalm wasn't at the same level as his early 00's run. However, I want him and any of my favorites to always have the freedom to release new albums if they get the urge to. Retirement in music is corny.

It might be hard to stop a job when that job isn't a job but a passion that consumes you. Pac and Biggie (unfortunately) never had a chance to "fall off" but I don't think fear of people thinking your new work doesn't measure up should make you stop either.

problem is w/ these older rappers is that they don't evolve. they don't necessarily need to evolve to fit in w/ the newer game but they just need to evolve their music. just to throw an example out there: who's gonna be listening to curren$y drop the same mixtape every month in 2023? unless he comes w/ something new, i'm not giving him that chance bc i'll already have my expectations set.

Hip hop is definitely a young man's game. True. But talent usually overcomes trends. If you create a dope album and you got an image, and you're 55 years old with a debut album, it's possible. At the end of the day, people don't know what they want. Just have balls and be the pioneer.

Rappers should stop when they feel they've got nothing else to give and not a day before, no matter if their newer material isn't as great as the past. We're on this journey together. Hip-hop sadly is the only genre where we've forced this idea that once rappers get older they're obsolete and I don't subscribe to that. Stay as long as you like OG's!

I think Eminem and Andre 3000 are both powerful examples in opposite lenses. Eminem still releases new music and it becomes more evident with each upcoming release that he will never hit the peak that was his first 3 albums (both quality and sales wise). Andre 3000 completely dropped out of the game after Idlewild and sticks solely to features now, fading away on a very high note that came with his efforts in Outkast. Impact wise, Andre 3000 is still on the top of most peoples favorite rappers lists as he has no negative works under his belt. On Eminem's side, his spot on a favorite rappers list (in my opinion) wanes with every new release. This does not take away the impact that Eminem had during his peak and even today, but it does affect his overall track record- which contributes heavily into whether or not he makes it into my top 5 or 10.

Lastly, this is what makes Kanye the GOAT. Not because he’s the best rapper, but because he’s able to drop every new project and each one be different from the previous and still be game changing and allow him to expand his repertoire and audience simultaneously. That being said, Kanye is the most successful rap artist of all time. The Throne was no pretentious title... Jay was letting us know that Ye is that guy.

Personally, i want artists to fade away. Can you imagine if Eazy lived and he made a song with Dre and Em today? Or if Prodigy was still alive how he’d sound. That song he did with Sha Hef (Made me do) is complete fire! And that song came out the year Prodigy died. Meth’s another good example. That song he did with Conway was dope! And on the flipside i feel ppl like Kendrick stopped wayyy to soon! So i’d def rather they stay in the game rather than an abrupt end. Doesnt mean they’ll always be hot but they always have the potential to create new hits.

I agree with the artist going in whatever direction they want to go, whether it be burning out or fading away. That being said, from a purely selfish consumer stand point, I like when artists fade away more since it means that consumers get more to listen to. If it's good, hey! More good music! And even if it's not good, from an analytical standpoint, there's so much discussion and understanding that can be gleaned from a project whether it is good or bad, about the artist, the direction of music, all that jazz.
