Should Rhystic Study be Banned

The problem I have with some commander players is that they will bitch and moan that rhystic and smothering will be a huge resource engine, but then have no problem with green just vomitting out lands with no one stopping it. Every color has their strengths and weaknesses, I don't really mind these.

heres my opinion, a 3 mana one-sided sphere of resistance is pretty good

Fair! But not that good. Especially in casual commander. 3 mana one sided sphere would see play in cEDH but I don’t think it would see much player in casual

One of my favorite commanders to play is Rith, the awakener because she taxes opponents for every card of a particular color they have on the battlefield. It hasn’t been uncommon that I get 10-20 saprolings because of my commander’s effect even though that could have been entirely prevented by my opponents being mindful about the permanents they play. So it is a case of my opponents having a lack of awareness that helped me win more games then I should.

The Rystic Study player is always using it as a draw and not a tax. Paying the tax can often be the difference, they are often counting on the draw. As for Smothering Tithe, the earlier it drops the worse it is. It doesn't matter if your opponent has 20 treasures, but no cards in hard.

Yea tithe is less of an issue for sure. Card draw is more powerful than ramp. And you are right many times the study player is hoping to get cards so if you don’t let them then they might fall behind!

I think rustic is fine ban solring I hate when a player has four mana on turn 2 isn't ok in any game 4 one player 2 be on turn 5 and everyone else is on turn 2 idk I dislike it personally

"How many times do we have to teach you this lesson old man" Just pay the 1. The only people complaining about the rhystic study and remora are unexperienced players. Remora turn 1? Just play your land and pass until it's gone, easy. Rhystic study in play? Always pay the 1 unless there is a good reason not to. I have 2 decks with a rhystic study and rarely do I get any value from it since people know how to counter it. Same for my opponents.

cyclonic rift needs a replacement before it gets banned. Something like a symmetrical blue mass bounce spell would probably do. Then again I think that may already exist so who knows.

Rhystic Study and Mystic Remora have been over performing in 60 card casual multiplayer and catapulting casters to wins off the back of bad/inexperienced players since years before almost anyone played EDH. They've *always* been broken designs in multiplayer because they were designed at a time where WotC balanced for 1v1 and didn't think about multiplayer at all; making designs that scaled with players unbalanced or unplayable generally, just look at the Rhystic Cycle of cards for examples. Rhystic and Mystic consistently set up games where bad players would never paid the 1 to cast creatures they then didn't attack with to pressure the owner because most bad and new players don't understand aggro and/or are afraid of attacking. But even the worst case scenarios of those cards were still back breaking tempo shifts if games were at all sweaty. 3 CMC for a 1 sided Sphere of Resistance is still a good card. Mystic was more of a temporary insurmountable tax for non-creature heavy decks that didn't want to give up cards when it was cast early and a pseudo one sided temporary Rule of Law if cast later. It's hard to say they should be banned in a format like EDH that is ostensibly and flavorful and automatic slower format where band decisions are not based on power or balancing a competitive meta. But they are kind of generically good and annoying in ways that aren't rewarding. Interesting play or deck design That does feel almost as bad to put in your dicks as it does to play against.

The card should be pay 1 mana draw a card. Not pay 1 to prevent it. The way its written it is OP but CEDH is OP. What I don't like, its annoying. What I call "a greedy fly".

I think the Commander banlist is almost a waste of time anyway. You can pretty much say that politics and rule zero solve any issue in the format, doesn't matter if a card is under or over-costed, or if it leads to "unfun gameplay patterns" or whatever. It's a casual format and there's stuff in there that was balanced through being too expensive for most people to own anyway. I don't think I'd hate a lot of these cards were it not for the fact that you see them in like a fourth of decks or more, but I guess if they were banned people would probably all just play some other card that's toxic unless everyone politics properly that only sees 15% of usage or whatever... So I guess it's kinda meaningless to ramble about. IMO Rhystic is cheaper than it should be and was clearly not designed this in mind. It's not really that much more broken than a lot of cards people play, but I think it leads to a lot of non-games where your decisions just didn't matter because the Midrange player decided their win con was to go over the top of the Rhystic player and the game became two weak players struggling to kingmake between the two strong players. It feels to me like it more strongly punishes the weaker decks at the table and the people that had a poor start. Strong players have the option to play a little faster and try to kill the Rhystic player before they bring those cards to bear, meanwhile weak players get to choose between developing their board or sitting there playing slowly and politely and hoping that the other players don't incidentally crush them on the way. After all, if you want to do as you say and play aggressively and pressure the person who's not paying the one, that doesn't really work if your deck is weak enough that attracting their ire will just get you crushed, right? By doing so you might as well be giving the Rhystic player the win. To put it another way, a table-wide stax effect feels like it actually /disproportionately/ hurts the weak players. Maybe that's just how I've felt in games where people were playing suboptimally, though.

I don't agree with saying a Rhystic Study that everyone pays the tax for every time is a strictly worse Sphere of Resistance. SoR impacts the caster too; *all spells* cost 1 more, not only your opponents' spells. Rhystic only slows down your opponents. If there was a 2U enchantment that said "all spells your opponents cast cost (1) more", no one would say it was a strictly worse SoR. Because the swing in mana tempo impact to the table builds quickly through the game. Relative to SoR it pays for its 1cmc higher cost at the next spell cast by you and is net positive after that. SoR is like any other tax piece that's symmetrical: it's to slow down degenerate decks so a fair deck can beat them and/or shut down combos that require several spells in a turn. You take the tempo loss because it hurts your opponents more. If you had the option to pay one more for SoR clone and it would only affect opponent spells, it would arguably be better in most cases because the net mana swing for the rest of the game would be greater than any 3 cmc mana ramp I can think of off the top of my head. It puts your opponents behind 1 mana each if they all just cast 1 spell per turn cycle. A 3 CMC mana rock that tapped for 3 mana with no downside would be very good. Stone Rain costs 3 CMC and hits one land; imagine if it destroyed 1 land for each opponent; most people would call that unbalanced...and that's the worst case. A worst case Rhystic is absolutely not a strictly worse Sphere of Resistance and I can't imagine how you arrived at that idea.
