Shame on the breeders who didn't take responsibility and do the free x-rays to add to the study. Those are the breeders who are only thinking of themselves and the lost money from sales that would result in finding out the truth about any of their cats truly suffering from FOCD. How irresponsible can you be? In my honest opinion, yes, they should be banned. Information should be sent out to all breeders, rescues, humane societies to inform them about this trait that actually causes a lot of unnecessary suffering in this breed of cat.

Being the cat person in my friend circle, I often try to advise people on the selection of a breed. We're a family of past pedigree Maine Coon breeders. And I always make it a point to say that while Scottish folds are adorable and I love their cuteness, then never ever get one. It's simply just not humane to support the breeding of cats with the prognosis of agony. Yes, they should be banned, adorable as they are.

Breeding cats that will live out their life in agony just for their looks is absolutely disgusting. Definitely should be banned. More people should be educated too. A true cat lover would agree.

They definitely should be banned. My neighbor adopted one, this cat is suffering from crippling arthritis. The cat’s brother died at 5 years of age from health complications and his sister will be next according to the veterinarian. If you look closely at their physical traits you can see the deformed nature of their body. The bones are not shaped symmetrically, their faces are squished inwards. They walk as elderly cats, and I assume the pain causes what I’ve seen to be aggressive behavior. I take care of my neighbor’s cat and I have worked with the ASPCA, from my experience I knew right away there was a problem. Despite my knowledge I couldn’t believe a cat so young could be suffering from these specific disabilities, arthritic at age 7? Now it makes sense, certainly after reading about the research done with Scottish Folds in Australia.
@sciencenotstigma9534
@sciencenotstigma9534 2 жыл бұрын
Their faces are squished because of historical cross-breeding of British Shorthairs with Persians. However, I agree they should not be bred. They are, essentially, British Shorthairs with a painful disorder. It’s cruel to intentionally breed for the gene. You are not the only one on this page who has known one or more Scottish Folds who died early, of disease. One woman lost her newly adopted cat to heart disease, at 3 years old. This is tragic, and inexcusable.

That's so sad. I heard Taylor Swift’s cats, Meredith Grey and Olivia Benson, are Scottish Folds, but I guess if anyone can afford the vet bills, it would be Taylor Swift. I also wonder if her having two Scottish Folds has also raised the popularity of this breed, which going off of what you said, is probably a terrible thing.

Human obsession with breeds simply always hurts the animal. Their cited personality traits in my opinion undermine firstly the fact that every cat is an individual, and secondly that any non feral street cat can be the most loving furball ever. That said, I think breeds in general should be phased out. It's healthier for the animal in terms of genetic health through diversity and fixes harmful traits like these.

Breeds sometimes have personality traits that lend to service animals and Emotional Support Animals. I have done decades of rescue and foster care for cats, their personalities vary widely, and do not always lend to work as ESAs. I think responsible breeding and adopting whenever possible is a more worthy goal than no breeding. A breeding program in which many, if not most, cats will have chronic health problems is in no way responsible. Burmese cats make excellent ESAs. If they are bred back to Thai cats often enough, they are likely to be healthy and hardy.

Imagine finding two cats with arthritis, having them mate together, and then calling it a new breed... If we are one day enslaved by aliens, won't it be so fitting if the aliens bred cancer into our species because they find it cute when we cough up blood? They can call the new breed "scottish fold human".

My first cat had folded ears. She wasn't a pedigree cat. Just a moggy I got from my aunt (her feral cat gave birth to three kittens. For a while I was searching for a black cat, and among those kittens there was this chubby, jet black kitten I named Goku, like the protagonist of Dragon ball, even though the kitten was a female). When the kitten was two weeks old, ears were still folded. They started to unfold later, and altough they were upright by the time my cat was threeto four months old, they were still unusually short, the cartilage was thick, the tip was round and tighly folded like in young kittens. When I got her i didn't even know what a scottish fold was, I excepted that my cat would have normal ears by the time of adult age, but her ears remained folded. She got clearly arthritis by the age of 11 (I was told that at the age of 11, iscommon for cats to get arthritis, regardless their ear shapes and their genetic makeup), and died this july, at the age of 19 to kidney failure. If she was still alive, she would have turned 20 exactly tomorrow, March 31th. I miss her. I think she might have had been a half scottish fold. Not only she had folded ears, she also had a cobby bodytype, double coat and was quite a large cat, with masculine traits like well developed stud jowls and primordial pouch (her head was very round even when she was a kitten). Though her mum was also a cobby (her sister was more the classic moggy, with a more elongated body, no stud jowls and large straight ears) I don't know much about pedigree SF, there are contraddictory infos around.

@@FactsaboutCatsVideos, what are other problematic cat breeds?
@sciencenotstigma9534
@sciencenotstigma9534 2 жыл бұрын
@@metri-e7i The Munchkin has an inherent risk of spinal problems and joint problems, because they are bred for a gene that causes shorter legs. The Sphynx is susceptible to an immune deficiency. I adopted a Sphynx with immune problems. They should not be kept in drafty houses, as they get very cold with little or no fur, and will need sweaters. Flat-faced cats, like Persians and Exotics, tend to have tear duct and other eye problems, and dental issues that can be quite serious. An underbite can cause teeth to be exposed to air, due to the mouth incompletely closing. This causes dry mouth and teeth, which leads to decay and, often, kidney disease. They can have breathing problems, as well, from the short, depressed nasal canal.

I think this video is overly alarmist. If you get a fold from a responsible cattery, the chances of good health are much better. Folds have an average life-span of 12-15 years - which is good. And if you want the best traits of the breed (which I would argue are not the folded ears) get a Scottish Straight where the chances of FOCD are much much lower. I've known a number of pet owners with folds and straights who have not had any problems.

My fold (moggy with the FD gene and other physical traits typical of the scottish breed, fold and straight) didn't had arthritis until the age of 11. In her case it was age related and developed slowly, she jumped until the age of 17 and climbed trees until the age of 18. Her tail has been flexible until the very last day of her life. She died at 19, at that age she had not strenght, but that wasn't caused by artritis, but by muscle waste due to CKD and old age.

I think it’s horrible that these are breaded but my issue with banning all of them is that it won’t stop people from breeding them. It will just be more dangerous for the cats that are bred illegally. The most effective option is to ban breeding folds with folds. This would still allow breeders who otherwise would be doing who knows what illegally to still have a reason not to do anything harmful to the cats.

Whilst I am not an expert, I would look into either getting a genetic test or looking at the cat's pedigree/parents. The condition is caused by a dominant gen, so at least one parent would also need to have it. The chances of both them and their parents having it yet both having straight ears (due to weak expression of the gene) is probably quite unlikely, but you could look at grandparents and siblings for more confidence. Ideally though, a genetic test will tell you for certain.

These cats are banned in my country

I don't think Scottish folds should be banned. It would make more sense to introduce stricter rules for breeding. A Scottish fold should Never NEVER! be paired with another Scottish fold. If you have a Scottish fold that you wan't to use for breeding, you should wait at least 3 to 4 years to see if it will develop severe focd. The other cat that a Scottish fold is mated to should not have in it's ancestry for at least 5-6 generations a Scottish fold. The further you can trace the family tree back the better. This step is extremely important to ensure that the cats will be healthy. If all of those steps are followed, then in my experience there are no problems and the cats will be able to run and jump happily like other normal cats. Sadly there are many irresponsible breeders who don't follow these steps, so if you want to get a Scottish fold then make sure to check the breeder so that you can be sure that your cat will be healthy.

Sadly any fold will have some degree of the degenerative joint disease. So there is no responsible way to breed them at all.

The only responsible thing to do is BAN THE BREEDING of all Scottish Folds. If the cat has folded ears…. It has the disease and it will suffer regardless of it’s lineage. Breeding them should be illegal.

Yeah. I've had a moggy with the FD gene. Her mum and her sister were feral cats with normal ears. My cat suffered from regular arthritis from the age of 11, but she never had symptoms of OCD

I have two scottish fold kittens. Its a very popular breed in my country and im hoping to breed them to be able to afford breeding Ragdolls (ragdolls are very expensive and rare compared to scottish folds in Iran) . Its such a shame knowing that this breed suffers so much. Pray for me to breed ragdolls instead of scottish folds. Not only my cas but their children are going to be exposed to pain and suffering is truly and severely heartbreaking.

dogs and cats carry genetic disorders, as well as humans. Why should scottish folds be banned and cease to exist for genetic disorders? Makes no sense. My friend has one but it has tall legs so its actually closer to an american short hair, and is very small/light, the chances of it having bone or joint issues from overweight is smaller. A lot of mixing of breeds for dogs has led to newer breeds, it will either happen in the wild or by human effort, and its more natural than certain artificial means. Certain cat and dog breeds are known for having genetic diseases yet they're allowed to exist just fine. Humans carry a lot more genetic disorders but we never say a certain bloodline or individual should cease to breed or exist lest they carry offspring with the same genetic disorders while favoring certain physical traits. Nature/Animals and sexual preferences in evolution made the proper decision humans can't of personality over physical survival traits. Like being 'funny/witty' short term feel good over financial stability and good decision making for long term feel good. Human obsession over breeding can be bad, for the same reasons for going for a specific feature, which potentially can be just as bad as breeding genetic flaws out of a breed/species.
@bilboswaggins7596
@bilboswaggins7596 3 жыл бұрын
literally nothing is natural about a breed bred for features, humans pick the cutest features in two cats then breed them. nothing about sexual preference. you would not find this breed naturally occurring if all cats were feral. it's the same shit as pugs. you can write a long ass essay justifying breeders who condemn these cats and dogs with health problems all you want but this would not happen in nature. it's all human intervention for money and it's cruel. don't breed a dog with a messed up face that will choke itself or a cat who's joints will collapse under it's own weight and you've got a happy pet. enough of this "can be bad" shit, it is bad. it's different if dogs are bred for strength but to breed a pet with severe health defects just because it looks cute is evil.

My God as a human you’re pathetic. You’re literally supporting the breeding of a cat that will endure the worst of pain so you can have a cat with with folded ears. DISGUSTING. I feel like I could puke after reading your disgusting comment.

@@bilboswaggins7596 Well, the original folded eared cats were feral. The mutation was natural. Then one day one of those mated with a cat who was used to human, and Susie was born.

@@alittlewheiser521 as an owner of a Scottish fold, I can clearly tell you not all of them develop the OCD condition, yes, they carry the gene, but not all display pain during their lifetime. My cat, and all of his pedigree are and were clear of debilitating OCD. they lived long lives, and had no health issues. Nearly all in fact died of old age, except one I believe that died from being run over sadly, right back as far as the 80's. Kitten records have been kept, and there have been no issues. Some people do the wrong thing by breeding Fold to Fold, but ethical and knowledgeable breeders strictly DO NOT follow this practise. Please study and learn the genetics of this breed rather than just assuming because it's a Fold, it WILL have a terrible disease and die in agony, this is 100% incorrect.
