The Dewalt DW735 and DW735X has an excellent reputation, and it's a popular thickness planer. Should it be your next planer? In this video I'll go over the important features, some downsides, and try to compare this planer to older style planers which are still available at less cost. I'll also show you how I made DIY stand and dust collection port for this planer.

This was a great review that hit all of the questions rolling around in my head. Thanks for taking the time to go over the good and the could-be-improved aspects for this model.

This is a great video. You delve into the key points of the planer and their functions, and you address the pros and cons with objectivity. That is rare on YT in my opinion. I just found your channel and will be back! Thank you.

Good video except my feed tables were not great straight from the factory, they were both angled and had to be adjusted. also, the way you attach it to the stand is by raising it all the way. you can then get the screw or bolt straight in and not on an angle 😊

I just wanted to thank you for making the repair video on the old model Delta. Today a friend gave me an oldie like that with a busted handle and it was making a hideous grinding sound. After your video, I had the confidence to dive in there and remove the plastic cover from the gear box. It was easier because it was on the bottom and just slid out. After dripping a small amount of machine oil over the gears, the thing quit the scary noise! I ordered a new handle off eBay for $24 and BOOM! I have a usable machine which should last until I sell a few more projects to get the coin for a DW735. So thanks!

@@enduringcharm I am new and just bought this machine and waiting for delivery but how do you eliminate snipes?
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm Жыл бұрын
@@rickyperkins232 Snipe occurs when the workpiece doesn't enter the planer perfectly parallel with the planer table. If the end is sticking up or down a little bit the planer blades cut in too deeply until the rollers are able to grab the workpiece and push it down flat. The same problem can occur on the way out of the planer. The solution is obvious--you need to have the board enter and leave the planer parallel. A longer infeed and outfeed table or guide can be a solution, but that takes up a lot of space. With practice you can learn to hand feed the board parallel until the rollers catch. And, you can leave the workpiece a little longer than what you need so that you can cut away any snipe later.

Great video and review. I am surprised you don't have a Jet combined planer thicknesser in that size workshop John.

My planing needs are really not that extensive. My typical needs are planing stock down for drawer sides, door panels, and various custom trim components. Any of the planers costing into the thousands of dollars would be hard for me to justify.

Thks for the video .. can you tell me how it handles a 13 inch board, does it really bog down?
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm Жыл бұрын
You must remember that the amount of material you are removing in one pass is the biggest factor in how the machine will handle a board, and the second biggest factor is the species of wood. When you put a board through any planer at full width capacity you'll want to take care to set a shallow depth of cut. In the case of this planer, you can also change the feed rate with the "cuts per inch" setting. So, yes, it will handle a full width board, but if you are planing oak or a figured hardwood, you'll want to take very shallow passes as opposed to a softer wood like pine.

@@enduringcharm I thought about that after of just make shallow passes and turn the speed down, I’m gonna buy one today. Thk you

You already answered this, albeit indirectly, but any thoughts of upgrading the cutter head to a spiral/helical design? …
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm Жыл бұрын
That's a great question. It's not an insignificant investment to install one of those cutterheads. One advantage is the ability to turn a small cutter if it gets a chip. But, as far as finish quality I really can't imagine asking for better than what I'm getting with the standard steel blades. The standard blades are currently $52, which gives you two sides to use. For me there is no compelling monetary or quality reason to switch to a helical design.

I found a used dw735 that is 12years old that was used buy a home hobbyist ... it looks on good shape is it worth buying or just too old ? thanks :)
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm 11 ай бұрын
Age is not really a factor, but the hours of use and the type of use can be. I have had tools from the 1940s which work just fine. So if you are certain that the current owner didn't abuse the machine then there should be no worries about age.

Dewalt must be run by idiot bean counter's. Why would you sell a planner without blades and the infeed, outfeed tables? Just greed I guess. I'm buying the grizzly with the helical cutter head for $840. This kind of cooperate greed will loose customers.

I understand your frustration. Unfortunately, these pricing and packaging games are rampant now, not just with DeWalt and not just with tool companies. Instead of earning a profit with the genuine exchange of value, companies now seem intent on tricking or forcing people out of their money.
