There's a big difference between that and some guy who wants to go around all of Northern England telling people they aren't English but Northumbrian, a Saxon kingdom that hasn't existed for over 1000 years. Scotland on the other hand, in the 300 years it's been part of the UK, retained its own legal system, had a completely different system of local government to England and Wales, army regiments there had a distinctive Scottish identity, the banks issue their own banknotes etc. The ethnic identity of Scotland and being Scottish has always been very strong even after the Act of Union. Same for Wales (although it shares a chunk of its legal system with England), same for Ireland before 1921 when the southern part broke away. If by comparison I walked round my local area in Manchester and asked 100 people if they were English or Northumbrian, I'm pretty sure the overwhelming majority are going to answer that they are English. Maybe in Liverpool I'll get the "I'm Scouse not English" answer and maybe in some of the areas near the Scottish borders I'll find people who might identify more with being Scottish than English but for the most part I don't really think most people in Northern England have suddenly decided they aren't English.
