Rugby has a real problem with laws that are so often 50:50 calls but that lead to penalties that are often in game-changing situations. As Nigel pointed out, in the Argentina v NZ question, scrum penalties are a common example, but it’s also a problem in rucks around not releasing the ball, or the tackler not releasing or rolling away, or the jackaller not holding his weight. So many close decisions are required by the referee, but the outcomes are incredibly significant. If rugby doesn’t somehow solve these problems, I think fans will eventually get turned off. What’s the point of supporting your team if whether they win or lose is ultimately decided by the referee?

This World Cup has really highlighted the problem you refer too. The game has become a raffle with so much open to interpretation depending what view you have of the situation and few ( if any ) referees capable of the ability to react in real time to the situation .You really need a 360 degree view of most situations ,hence the TMO coming into it, which is slowing the game down and reducing the spectacle. Then you have the problem of off side play which after watching the quarters /semis and final live is a joke , as refs attention is on the ball and the breakdown- they are receiving no help at all from touch judges and off side play was rampant. It is too hard to take the game seriously now and this will be my last World Cup. The booze situation at Stade de France was also bad , not helped by the late 9pm starts and distance to the ground meaning most spectators were there early with nothing to do but drink. Stadiums need to shut the bars when the game starts - as I said to one drunk person who was going for more drinks with 15 mins to go in the French quarter final - just go to a bar and watch the game. Why ruin the spectacle for everyone else who have paid a lot of money to get there ? The final was no better with beer flying in all directions- Bok and NZ fans were coming up the steps 4 beers at a time and losing most of it on the ground or on other spectators - they were so drunk.
@arandombard1197 Жыл бұрын
Just remove penalties from scrums altogether. Too often you see the ball go in and then as a viewer I just can't see what was wrong the scrum but apparently one side gets some free points. It's too disconnected and arbitrary. If the ball doesn't come out properly from the scrum or the offending side gets the ball, then just give the 'winner' an uncontested ruck and get on with the game. Otherwise just let it play out.

Bad call. This situation is the one in the game that still has the most grey area in it. But in near' every situation the tackler is trying his best to roll away: why wouldn't he when the ref's looking right there - and he still gets 'ping'ed. In this situation Mostert is obviously going to roll that way, the England cleaner is late. He takes the most direct route to the breakdown, fair enough. But he wasn't a yard closer to prevent the jackel. It won't be long before late cleaners will mainly look for someone to trip on who is rolling away. Anyway we can't carry on with a situation where players are doing their best to be not penalized, but are anyway. It should be 50/50.

That last scrum penalty was a correct call to me. I know its possible, but very difficult for a tighthead to drive inwards if both players either side of him are pushing straight. View from above shows both England players pointing inward while only Koch is at an angle (Bongi straight as an arrow). This is what happens when you over-extend and go to your knees in a scrum.

I've seen elsewhere the knee touched the ground before ball - put in so only a free kick - as can only be penalty after put in - I get the resets is annoying - but Nigel was diplomatic . He did state ref stuffed up ( can't go back to uncalled penalty( really free kick ) ) - if called free kick - then Boks would have gone to scrum again - The angling of OX was severe - Ref wasn't listening to english prop from all other penalties - ox hiding his shoulder - ref saying be stronger in bind - Anyway All Blacks now get the benefit as Ox will be under massive scrutiny by Barnes as a known offender for doing this in UK and other games - he will dial back -like Boks dialed back HIA assessments , interfering in air etc ( in previous years) - both teams are now getting penalties down - Boks had Ben O'keefe for a number of games in a row - that was a big advantage Plus nearly no Ref now calls the knee touching the ground briefly before put in a free kick - as time wasting - same as all those collapse scrums - where ball comes out 3 seconds later - most refs don't call England have plenty of chances - much more attacks in 22 - but mucked up all of them It's easy for Nigel to justify most decisions - eg that jackal - but let's say that was the winning penalty for Boks - Nigel would have said even though there was a tackler on the ground , he was mostly out of way and there was really no English player to clear him off the ball - see easy - To me the jackal was fine - even though Boks and every other team cheat in rucks

Adding some more info to the scrum. Once Genge goes to the knees, his hips swing out to re-engage and compete. Then he scrums in and because he is on the loose head side, it forces more for Koch to be pushed inward. Penalty is the correct call.
@iangraham871 Жыл бұрын
So is your interpretation that Genge dropping to his knee momentarily gave him an unfair advantage in allowing him to reset (i.e. a penalty no matter what happened next with regard to the direction of the drive)? Does the Law say that the knee must not touch the ground at any time? Thanks
@dgs4184 Жыл бұрын
@@iangraham871 the law states that players in the scrum must have both feet in the ground, with their weight firmly on at least 1 foot. At the same time falling or kneeling is sanctioned with a penalty. So technically the moment his knee hits the ground it should be blown. the intention behind him dropping down was not to gain an advantage. Or at least it didnt look like it. It seemed more caused by the pressure of the engagement. But with that motion of dropping down and coming back up, his hips were positioned inward and no longer straight. The other law was then broken of not staying square and pushing forward. Seems in real time like the ref was willing to let the knee go if Genge had stayed square and scrummed straight. But then he pushed inward and at that point the penalty was awarded.
@Karma-qt4ji Жыл бұрын

Regarding S.A. v Eng scrum pen. It’s hard to disagree with your breakdown of it. But O’Keefe didn’t call it like that. He ignored the knee. Then called Advantage when the scrum moved sideways at pace. Him calling advantage must have meant no S.A. infringement. Or he would have blown for the original pen once he saw the infringement. Like you said, half the issue with scrums are it’s super intricate and subjective. Really hard for a casual viewer to get invested. In all honesty, a lot of the time Refs don’t know what’s going on. They see a scrum going forward and penalise against the other team.

Snyman throws the boot away so it doesn't impinge anyone on the field of play and potentially causes an injury. Sugeesting that this is in any way against the spirit of the game or ungentlemanly is EXTREMELY prejudiced.

In the Du Toit incident, the tackler clearly rolls away immediately. He also has no impact on the contest for the ball. Wrong decision to penalize him. There was a similar decision against Kolisi, also hard to understand. There was also the decision against Etzebeth, where the last player wasn’t bound. Just a comment on the last scrum, the English loosehead goes to his knee twice, then scrums inward. The referee is clear in his explanation, who’s commentary can be heard as it happens.

Even Willemse had a clear right to the ball and got penalized, there were tons of these opportunities from the Boks but they were not rewarded at all.

When is the point that Nigel Owens drifts into "yesterday's voice"? Evolved laws, coaches ever more tricky, player techniques more artful, and so on. They are all real developments that only contemporary referees handle. For myself, i find myself discounting Owens more and more, underlined by the 2023 World Cup has been the most officiated rugby moment so far. It is just my feeling, but I feel more and more rugby followers lean this way nowadays.

Guess the TMO sweep did not pickup Owen Farrell playing the ball while lying flat on his back. 🤷♂️ Interesting how the TMO chooses what they see and what they don't

Regarding the scrum, the referee had his arm out to indicate advantage to SA when the scrum pressure was applied, and called the advantage as soon as the scrum started moving inwards - the delay before calling the penalty had nothing to do with the "interpretation" but only the application of the rule. Nigel Owens confirmed earlier a player can not participate if he is on the ground, which Genge was. As for the delay, it was SA's ball and it was coming back to Faf de Klerk, in most cases referees allow the game to proceed, to see if the advantaged team could benefit, which did not materialise, therefore the whistle and penalty call. As for the PSdT call, both he, and Ben O'Keefe "interpreted" it incorrectly. Mostert did well to get away so quickly with being impeded by an opponent - luckily that mistake did not affect the result. Ben O'Keefe should be commended for stamping out the shithousery (Tiulagi and Farrell, eventhough Marler got away with some) which the home unions are famous for - by doing this he curtailed the escalation of this and ensured we did not have a situation like there is with every Lions tour. (During the 2009 Lions tour there were a couple of great examples of Brussauw's strength when he sorted the Lions out) I have not seen a game yet where the refereeing was absolutely flawless, but O'Keefe was fair. I don't believe Snyman threw the boot away to be unsportsmanlike, more because it was in the way! It was where play was taking place and it could cause a hinderance, a trip or injury - loose objects lying about unattended on the field of play is like a landmine - you step on it, and you have problems.

Question about the Du Toit/ Mostert penalty. Doesn't the tackler get a certain amount of time to get out of the way. In real time Mostert tackled and tried to jump to the side (so out of the way of the scrumhalf) all in one motion. Secondly; why isn't Ben Earl penalised for entering from the side rather than through the gate where Mitchel was approaching from.

This is where there is so much murkiness when teams play negatively. Last few minutes of the game you ahead by 2 and in danger of conceding? Collapse the scrums. Want a penalty in the rucks? Trap the opposing player in the rucks as they make the tackle. NZ are experts at lying around the ball innocently or sealing an opposing player in in the course of the tackle.

re throwing the boot away, I think it is a safely issue. He just tossed it away from the play, not like he threw it into the crowd or anything, If he just dropped it someone could stand on it and roll an ankle. (eg Glenn Magrath in 2005 ashes)

I tend to always agree with Nigel, however, the SA tighthead going in is not the second offence, it’s the third. The English Loosehead’s knee hitting the ground (indicating a weak position) is first. The the English loosehead (who is now in a compromised position) burrowing in, is the second offence. The SA tighthead is going in because the loosehead (who is loose, therefore actually able to burrow in), is going that way. The issue with Snyman throwing the boot… this should be praise not criticised. A loose boot on the ground (possible steel studs), is a major safety risk around a ruck. Get it out of there.
@shaunk6822 Жыл бұрын
I think the ref also gave the penalty on the balance of pressure. If a prop is making a mistake it's most likely going to be the one from the team who've lost the last few scrums.

Bok fan here, first for me to watch a simplified breakdown of some of the regulations on field by Nigel. A BIG thank you to Nigel for this, i will admit that i was not a big fan of yours at some point in time, but the fact that you willing to explain regulations and it's intended applications is real nice !, i might be hated for saying this, but i think there is great differences in how these are applied during games, and i think it's one of the biggest reasons of conflict in the sport. During the past RWC there seem to have been great effort put in place to try avoid this, and i do value this. I just HOPE for ongoing effort to be made to promote unbiased decisions during games. Question, could you give us an indication of what happened just before the final whistle during the finals, any wrongs or not ? That banana and choc dish you had, for a moment it sounded like you said "another word" 😂 , in South Africa we call those pancake's, and mostly enjoy those with cinnamon sugar Also, i enjoyed the tourist view you gave of Paris, as i have never had the privilege of getting to experience it !
