@@MrX-qo5wb you don't get it. The problem is that the chances of being in the real world is infinity small. There is only one real world. There is infinite simulations because if one simultation is even possible there is infinite. because if it is possible to make one it will repeat. The evidence is that you can't draw evidence from our reality because you would not be able to tell you're in a simulation. Therefore you gamble are you the 1st or the infinite rest?

Shit man... I thought Joe was like this enlightened cat. Has he honestly not considered the possibility that the simulation he may or may not be in could fabricate his parents, biology, the microphone he is speaking into, etc? Also, has he not considered the concept that the simulation he/we are in could be somewhat similar to the OG history (cuz, u know it’s like a safe bet or whatever)? Or maybe the opposite... Maybe this is the newest iteration of the simulation and that this feeling of being somewhat close to a philosophical awakening is the most effective way for a simulation to prevent Matrix-style vigilantes from wearing frayed cable-knit sweaters and throwing around catch phrases like “whoa” and “I know Kung-Fu”. Haha so true... For both of them actually. Joe is being uncharistically thick here, and bostrom makes a really poor job at explaining his reasoning in words that make sense to the average joe (hehe). I would summarize it like this: IF we assume that creating a simulation that can replicate our current experience is potentially possible (in the past, present or future), then it is much more likely that we currently live in such a simulation than in the "original one" (the source of all other simulations, which doesn't have to be a "place" or "earth reality" either, by the way)

If we create a realistic simulation, then the people inside our simulation would believe they are living a completely real life. They wouldn’t ever think that a simulation was possible until they became technologically advanced to the point where they could create their own sort of simulation to provoke such a thought. Much like where we are now. Maybe we did win the 1 in a million chance that we aren’t in a simulation, but maybe we didn’t. A betting man would put his money on that we are in a simulation. That’s only if such a realistic simulation is even possible. Though with the progress of tech in our reality, it seems that it could be very possible in the future.

@swampythang71825 жыл бұрын
Mrs Manager, to be fair, he did a pretty bad job of explaining it to Joe. Bostrom could’ve just explained it by saying at some point in time we will be able to have millions of realistic simulations running. Why would we assume that we aren’t one of the millions? The simulation would be indistinguishable from reality so there is no real way of knowing if this life is real or simulated. Maybe our history was simulated. Maybe all of our memories were simulated and the simulation started yesterday. Maybe time is going by at 2x faster then the speed outside of the simulation so we progress much faster than outside of the simulation. The probability is in favor of us being in a simulation, but then again, the odds of winning the lottery are pretty damn low, but someone’s gotta win it. Either way, this video was 2 guys repeating themselves for 33min so really, we are the ones with patience to watch the entire thing XD.

@@1060michaelg , that is a great simple analogy. I think Joe was probably trying to play "devil's advocate" like he normally does. Bostrom couldn't answer that question because there is no answer at all. The best answer would be "All we can do is look at the statistics and make an educated guess."
@1060michaelg5 жыл бұрын
@@swampythang7182 Thanks, You nail it squarely saying "There is no answer at all." Absolutely correct. Bostrom was trying to get across concepts like; Being INSIDE, we have no objectivity---it's all subjective. A Quantum scientist and probability mathematics people would grasp easily, 'How do we KNOW a mile is a mile? What does it really mean? Just because Joe wakes up and eats, sees his car outside the window, he has no proof that THIS is not the first day of another simulation?'" Put another way: Every second is a new frame in the "Time Game", so we are all actually are living tiny Quantum bits at a time. I'm surprised that Nick didn't catch on to why Joe didn't understand this. I get where Joe is coming from. But he's not getting the point that just because the simulation hasn't been invented in this reality now, we are saying that if a civilization had the means to eventually create one, they would, and if they did, there would be simulations within simulations within simulations, and you wouldn't know if you were in one of the simulations and are just on the part of the timeline of that simulation where the simulation hasn't been created yet. But the fact that we are in a simulation where our place in the timeline of such simulation is such that they haven't invented it yet doesn't mean that we are not in the simulation in the first place.
@fillbrin17 күн бұрын
Another possibility I see is Joe might be thinking in a simcity video game scenario, or black mirror scenario, where the 'simulation' is just here and now out of nowhere and no time. Nick could clarify that a planetary/universe-size simulation would consider all the stages of our evolution, including all the development of science, technology, etc.

First of all, I disagree that being able to do it means that most likely it'd be done. Why? Why would such an advanced tool/people decide to simulate "us"? It would be so costly regardless of the era/tech, it just doesn't make any sense to do so. Why would it be us...what would make that worth the costs? But much more importantly & more definitively, I think, is the fact that it's very likely not possible to come anywhere close to simulating just one consciousness, let alone our entire universe. Our universe is likely quite efficient, quite elegant, so it's likely that the most efficient form of our universe is our universe, & that simulating it would be more difficult/expensive (in every sense of the word) than our actual universe's creation & evolution was/is. The staggering data involved doesn't approximate something like a hyper-advanced video game...say a video game 70 years from now that focuses on recreating with great realism our everyday lives; it's rather data on the level of...well, impossibility, & it's interesting that so many brilliant folks don't see this straight away & dismiss it on that alone - though many do...& they're correct, I believe. It's super fascinating though David, I agree on that!

We’ll be able to create Dyson spheres to capture the energy of stars. Energy is not a complete field. 2. Would we want to? - I don’t know. We are making the meta verse though. 3. Think about physics - Everything in the universe is a formula, whether we know the formula or not. From quantum mechanics to space-time to developing consciousness. No one is saying that we will for sure create these simulations, but that if we do create them there will be a 1/many chance that the lives we are living now are not simulated (since there will only ever be one true reality.) " As a statistical evaluation I believe and think Joe is the same, that it starts on a flawed premise that making the simulation is more likely than not, given humanities record. So if the question is out of the realities being either a) we have not yet made it. B) we have made it - well thsts not a million to one. It only becomes a million to one once you have the definitive factor of the simulation was made.

@@Last_March_of_the_Gents I believe the likelihood is greater given our ability to construct something of this nature. or, to put it even more simply, the ability of the rules of physics to support something of this kind. He did understand the argument. He just didn't agree with it. Bostrom's third option makes literally no sense in any way shape or form. Firstly, yes, using Occam's Razor suggests that we currently are in base reality. Secondly, and this is a very important point, if we are NOT in base reality, but instead are in a simulation, why would the people who simulated us (or AI) give us the ability to be aware the we may be in a simulation? The entire point of an ancestor simulation, according to Bostrom himself, is to simulate the memories and experiences of our ancestors. If this were the case, in our world, there are some people who believe in simulation theory. This means that, however how small the probability, it is POSSIBLE that we will never make simulations because of our fear of creating new simulations. Additionally, his probability models completely fail to account for motivation. What is the purpose of creating an INFINITE number of simulations? Why would you make an infinite number of the exact same simulations? His argument involves too much human ego and human-centric thinking. If you wanted to make simulated ancestors, why would you give them a consciousness? He also has absolutely no evidence that human, biological consciousness can be translated into synthetic, digital consciousness. He makes dozens of assumptions about the progress of technology which have no basis in reality. He even uses Moore's Law, which is not a law but is actually a trend, and in fact it is slowing down. The probability of us NOT being in a simulation are far greater considering all the variables.

Joe just can't, or won't, process that Bostrom is making a probability argument. This was really frustrating to watch. Joe doesn't usually cling to this kind of stubborn refusal to simply understand the nature of what someone else is saying, whether he agrees with it or not.
@Sappa97025 жыл бұрын
I understand but I think Joe was stubborn in this case because Bostrom was not giving him the satisfaction of saying this could be the first/only reality.

He's making a probabilty argument based on a flawed premise though, that's the problem. Joe asking "why would we assume there's a simulation" is valid. *Actually* demonstrate the existence of the simulation, and *then* we can assign probabilities of Person X being part of the simulation. If you don't accept the premise that a simulation exists, whatever further points are built on that foundation are irrelevant.

@@DJFLDJFL I think the other guy understood that though an tried telling Joe it's just a thought experiment. The closest truth we have to defining anything and everything is with numbers and observation. What we've observed and the math we've done in our history, makes it more probable that we live in a simulation is all he is trying to say. I think other commenter's right, it's probably more Joe's ego being stubborn than not understanding the concept but if the guy says "okay Joe imagine you are right and.." that's flawed because he knows it not to be right an he would just have to explain way more stuff to Joe which would be impolite to do on Joe's show. He was already trying really hard to not be condescending after the 3rd go lol

@@Sappa9702 Naz™ Right. It all could be. So to assign probabilities that I'm also a frog, I'm in a simulation, you're not in a simulation, you're the Queen, etc...flawed. Start with evidence. @bmxriderforlife12342 жыл бұрын
But the science side doesn't always get I to the fact of the size of computer we need to develop in order to prove the theory. You need star sized computers with much faster computation power. Further more you need ancestral simulations can can be run fast enough to reach the conclusions needed to be useful for studies. Ie you need to be able to simulate thousands of years very quickly while holding high levels of accuracy. The program levels would be astounding. Material requirements are also astronomically high. Given we are just as close to destroying ourselves as we are to that level of simulation it's not actually that likely its just a possibility. Beyond that simulation of everything is something we are interested in. Not just ancestral simulations. Which creates situations where you have limited simulation info and tech which would create oddities in the simulation which would make the insiders known that they are simulated. Which means the fact we haven't been shut down and are thinking about this means we are just as likely to be the real thing as a simulation. It's a mind breaking concept. But it's complex. Even with planetary sized computers the speed is likely to limit uses. We'd be running shorter simulations to run deep into uncharted territory while using the known history of certain shit plugged in towards the tail end to reverse engineer the historical possibilities. As we understand space better and can comprehend things that are harder to simulate we make it less likely we are simulations. To properly simulated the entire universe requires things much larger then the planet to star sized computers theorized. Or clusters of computers that size. Making in more and more likely we aren't a simulation. Its like the wait equation but with Fermi paradox and other shit. Though Fermi paradox might also be able to prove simulation theory. Normally we'd be less then 5050 to be simulation to real. Right now it's closer to 5050 then the proponents of this theory like to admit to. Or maybe even realize it.

@bmxriderforlife12342 жыл бұрын
@@thaiphrasestoknow9214 yes but we also have zero examples or evidence for that. And it's not necessarily 2hat a level 3 society would do. A level 3 society would be using biological computers which would greatly reduce size requirements and potentially up computation speed. But by that point they don't even need to run ancestor simulations. Which counter acts the theory. It's more likely a level 1 or 2 project. In theory we could do it ourselves currently if we had continued the development of space technology at the pace set during the space race along with not letting military interests control certain other shit along with America's failing capitalism. Technically speaking we should've had nuclear power and green energy by 2000 along with gigabit internet and hybrid technology in the 80s. Which would've pushed solid state battery technology further earlier. Which in turn would've allowed for other things to come sooner. For example we could already be using lasers to transmit energy and information. Combines with solar tech and satellites you could create solar farms in space that also allow for massive transition of data fast.

@danielchapter701284 жыл бұрын
Bostrom: if technology keeps the pace it has, barring condition A, (whereby our civilization self destructs, or B, whereby we all agree to halt technology advancement), then it’s logical to assume eventually we will create hyper-realistic simulations indistinguishable from reality. if we assume one million such simulations will eventually exist, and only ONE base reality ever existed, it’s far more likely we are in one of those million simulations, because probability. Joe: I COMPLETELY understand that. But WHY wouldn’t it actually be far more likely we are in base reality??
@danielchapter701284 жыл бұрын
17:55, Bostrom ALMOST got to the root of Joe’s inability to grasp this concept. He says “There are a million simulations, right, and you cannot tell from the inside-“ at which point Joe cuts Bostrom off, before he could finish and say “cannot tell from the inside THAT YOU ARE IN A SIMULATION because every PROOF that you’re in base reality is ALSO simulated”.
