Should We Move to Arcata, California?

My boyfriend Ty and I (this is Caitlin btw) have been debating where to move after we're tired of Los Angeles. We visited #Arcata in northern #California, near #RedwoodNationalPark and the Oregon border, and absolutely loved it. Here's a bunch of reasons why we would move here!

I lived in Arcata for 4 years in the late 1970s. My only complaint was the weather. It's cloudy and rainy all winter---and it remains cloudy and cool all summer. A sunny day over 70 degrees is rare.

My fiancé and I are from the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County. We moved here because our kids were accepted to HSU. We moved to Humboldt in 2018 and been here since. We both work from home, bought a house, have the friendliest neighbors, our church is awesome, no gangs, no smog and no traffic like Southern California. Some people gave us the negative before moving here about drugs and homeless, etc...but that's everywhere in the world. We love it here and the small town setting. Some of our neighbors are also from the Los Angeles area being here for over 10 years and they said they are never going back to Southern California.

This is great to read. Makes me lean more away from saying NO, but still, I have my concerns given all the negative things said about the area.

If you’re okay with all the homeless drug addicts and vagabonds. Sure why not? Don’t walk through the woods at night unless you have a gun or a a scary dog.

Yes. Just be careful of "Arcata Bottoms." The "Arcata Bottoms" has been under water in the past. 1950's due to flooding. Eureka, CA is cool too. Also in terms of furniture and clothing, you won't get the latest styles there. You will have to order off of the Internet. It's so remote. The nearest Macy's is in Redding, CA some 2 hrs. inland. Otherwise, you'd be surprised the access to culture, music, plays, small concerts, etc. There's a lot to do. Finally, just FYI, the followers of the Grateful Dead used to camp on the Arcata Plaza whenever the Grateful Dead were not playing. The Arcata Plaza used to be a hippie camping spot. The City finally shut it down. My dad grew up in Arcata.

I appreciate your enthusiasm and appreciation, but I must express that this sacred place is not just a landing pad for when one tires of Los Angeles. This region is rich in Native American history and mystery, particularly of the Wiyot Tribe. Plant wisdom is integral, as the Redwoods themselves, embody the energetic of community. So, if you intend to arrive, please do not further colonize this region or hold it as a second best to L.A., after it has been extracted of any further value. They don't even compare. Oket'oh (the indigenous name for Arcata) is full of soul and integrity. I'm a California native, grew up here and attended college here. Please remember that places are sacred homes to some of us. Thank you.

I am so so happy to have found your video Thank you for making and posting it. I have a zoom job interview there next week and have only visited the area twice in my life. I have mixed feelings about actualy living up there, especailly since all I've been reading about all the problems there like drugs and homelessness, which is disproportionate to other cities of the same size. I lived in SF for many many years and then in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts. Did you guys finally settle on the north coast? I'd love to know how your year has been since you made this video. Are you still as enthusiastic and is it everything you had hoped for? Best, Anthony

Do every one a favour who wants to preserve small town USA. Remove this video! I have seen manytowns across US get destroyed with over pop and development. A few good things about Arcata area is. No job market, not a great weather for those who like warm, sunshine year around. Plus they get earthquakes , fires in this region.
