hi. i'm hoping that you can help me (or at least point me in the right direction). i just got started with home assistant. so far i only have one temperature sensor and one smart plug (soon to be more), and i'm not ready to write my own YAML yet. anyway, i have several criteria for when i want the smart plug to switch on. for that purpose i'm thinking about input booleans, like the one you used in your daily briefing video. problem is, how do i create those input booleans? and can i use logic operations (and, or) on them?

You can create the input Booleans in the helper menu. They are called toggles there. And it is under the settings menu. And you can use logic operations on then. But that would require some Jinja. You could use them as conditions and conditions can easily be set as and /or using the ui automation builder.

@@SlackerLabs it should be possible to do the processing in node red. the problem is how to get the info into node red and back into home assistant. i'm gonna look into that when i get back from work...

any recommendations for local only vacs? I have a roborock s5 modded with valetudo. But not sure if there are others out there that can be done local only.

I haven’t found any that were local only out of the box. I have tested a couple that were tuya based. And after you set them up in the tuya app you could use local tuya to do the rest of the communication locally. Honiture q6 lite is like that. I’m using it local only now. But it did require getting it setup with the tuya cloud first.

@@SlackerLabs I haven't seen the latest state of tuya local. it's not the WORST option for sure. I can say though that valetudo on the vacs that you can flash them or sidecar or whatever is SLICK. all local, mqtt, web UI, very very cool.

Have we really reached the point where due to laziness we are willing to allow a device to go anywhere in our homes mapping and photographing everything it can sending all that data off to an unknown entity??? Not me... NOT EVER. I don't want anything that requires an api key or third party authorization at all... I love this channel and like home automation but think about what you may sacrifice with this type of product...

That’s a really good point. And we don’t know what kind of fidelity the camera has. Although I seriously doubt this is is HD images. But I walk around with a cell phone that knows my location, has a camera, and a microphone. And we know cell phone companies are already sell that location data. Not to mention all those apps reporting back. Where do we draw the line? And why accept a smart phone that is involved in more of our lives but not smart home tech that has less access? I don’t have an answer for that. And security definitely needs to be a priority in the conversation. But I often think about the lines I draw when it comes to smart home tech compared to what I have already accepted.
