From Tanzania here... been using hybrids made by toyota for quite sometimes now.. and i have also become an expert in dealing with their unique problems along the journey of ownership. These hybrid from toyota they have two main systems that if something goes wrong, it can cost an arm and leg to deal with. These systems are brake system and hybrid system, i.e., high voltage battery, or transmission (motors both Mg1 and MG2) or inverter.. but good things these items mentioned are very reliable than traditional ic cars if properly well taken care of. For battery, the main cause of battery failure is prolonged exposure to heat, heat cause leak of fluid inside battery, and cause electrons not to move smoothly. This eventually cause increased internal battery resistance. The increased resistance cause batteries to overheat and swell, hence decreaed capacity to hold charge and become weak. And since battery management software of these hybrid is very sensitive to voltage difference and DELTA soc, so battery warning light is triggered when software detects voltage difference among battery modules is beyond range ie 0.3V, or when delta soc is above 40%. Now to prevent the situation as a results of module overheating, batteries are fitted with cooling fan to cool the batteries modules, so this fan is always supposed to be functional, clean from dust and not blocked at anytime when the car is on. But for pro-active reasons i always use dr prius app or hybrid assistant app to run battery cooling fan anytime when battery temp is 35°c..so my battery temp is always below 35°c so because of this my battery has never troubled me since i bought the car with 50k km now it has 300k km with no single battery issue, infact the battery is in good shape interm of its parameters and remaining life. For ABs and brake system it is good to change brake fluid after every 2yrs to avoid brake related issues or you can swap the system by installing traditional vacuum operated brake system and install electric vacuum pump for the system to work. About inverter, there is a small electric water pump that is responsible for circulating inverter coolant. that pump tends to go out quickly, especially for Gen 2 prius,so if the pump goes out, the inverter overheats, and it can be damaged (note inverter is the heart of hybrid drive train system) .so solve the issue always install the pump from Mercedes benz or any car with a third generation hybrid system.

Great content! As a proud owner of a Toyota Aqua 2012 for the last four years, I can confidently say it's one of the best hybrid cars ever made by Toyota. In Nairobi's busy traffic, it delivers an impressive 20km/l, and on highways, I get up to 26km/l-all because I’ve maintained it well. Yes, I had to replace the hybrid battery one year ago, which cost Ksh 120,000, but since then, it has performed flawlessly. The brakes are excellent, and I’ve never had any issues with them, nor have I ever experienced overheating or other major concerns. For anyone considering a hybrid, don’t let fear discourage you. With proper care, these cars are economical and reliable, even in a challenging economy. Remember, all cars-hybrid, electric, or ICE-have their quirks. It’s about how you maintain yours. Be cautious of mechanics who may exaggerate issues, like Nyambura whose major focus was making money more than selling solutions😉 Hybrids are worth it! Let’s focus on informed decisions rather than fear

It is more probably the case most of the cars you see are Fielders because the Fielder is the most popular car in Kenya.Chances are the Fielder will like have more mileage on it when it is imported and there the battery might appear to wear out faster.

I don’t think that’s true, the batteries are made to withstand all sorts of weather. Fan fact temperatures in western countries are extremely hot in the summer and extreme cold in the winter, and they still use electric and hybrid vehicles. those batteries have a warranty usually 10years or 100,000miles or 160,000km..by the time the second hand vehicle are sold in the Kenyan market it has already exhausted its life for the battery and that’s why you have all those issues.
