Maybe he started from a freeware or opensource project like Speeduino which also uses Arduino as a start point. But it's still a great job building all the hardware. And simply making it fit in different cars is not that simple. I mean theory is about the same for every car. But rarely you find "plug and play" parts to fit them, specially on those old Mercedes and French cars, I guess.

actually, it is quite simple. knowing a bit of programming helps, but the basics of EFI is very simple. open an injector for a certain length on time on every cycle in a cylinder by estimating the volume of air with that cylinder to maintain an ideal stoichiometry. yes, i HAVE done it myself... using absolutely NO "existing" software or procedures. FFS, i can do it with a 555 timer chip. ive done it with a pic12f683 as no existing system was suitable for my requirements. the HARD part is dealing with the actual programming, interrupts, 8-bit mathematics in binary. the "flow" of the program. how to write a fuzzy logic calculation in assembly language. i had to teach myself programming in an "obsolete" language and think in a new way. the limitations of an injector and its delivery rate at the two extremes of operation, idling and full RPM, around 12,000 rpm for my project... again, the actual basic concept of EFI is very simple. extremely simple.

Hi i am from India. He has engineed the entire fuel and ignition of the car, that to its not some generic stuff, each build is made ground up from scratch. Here a remap of an ecu itself costs 400$ most of the remaps rely on available data which at max would be fine tuned. The efforts that this man does for his build is amazing and charges reasonable amount for this hard work. Think the application on old cars may not be lucrative for him. I think he should expand to other areas like performance tuning of existing ECUs. It will give him much higher profits with lesser effort. @@KOAP33 This is basically a fuel injection conversion, and has been invented for long, but it really doesn't make sense anywhere but in Africa... Almost every car since 1990 is already fuel injected, and those before that date are considered classics, so people tend to value their originality over the fuel efficiency. Africa is different because they have been importing old vehicles from Europe for decades, and they are running daily a lot of cars which would be considered classics in Europe (specially Mercedes), and so a fuel injection conversion makes sense for them. Making his own ECU is a remarkable achievement for this engineer, but it isn't groundbreaking for the industry.

Tuning an engine with a stand alone ECU is nothing new. 80's and 90's were filled with modified Hondas, Mazdas, Toyotas, etc, using software and hardware that would totally rewrite the factory fuel map. This man is basically applying that same tech to older mechanical injection or carburated engines. As much as i'm a proud owner of a solid Skoda Felicia from 2000, 1.3 petrol engine, and i can really appreciate an old solid car, the next issue in line even if you improve the car's performances like this is safety. And i know because my car doesn't come fitted with airbags 😅 Still i would love to fit one of those units on my car! Safety is a point i always struggle with when arguing with anyone about viability of old cars... as much as you can drive with your eyes open, there could always be someone distracted that hit you, maybe with a brand new SUV, and utterly ruin you, your family, and your car while he comes out almost unscathed. Also in italy for example, people drive like maniacs on highways, that is something i can confirm after spending holidays in germany and coming back.

This guy is the worlds leading environmentalist as far as I am concerned. He is extending the life of existing transport tech and thereby commuting the need for the spurious manufacture (which is the real environmental cost) of new vehicles. In the process, upgrading old vehicles to be far more fuel efficient. This is leading environmentalism because there are hundreds of millions of cars that can potentially benefit from this. There are literally graveyards of EVs that have never spent their life transporting people. They are insanity. This tech is the polar opposite of that. This is how it's done. Somebody give this guy a medal, an obscene amount of money, and a mandate to roll this out to all old vehicles.

This guy is freaking awesome. But what you're saying is simply not true. You can like ICE cars _without_ having to bash EVs; it's not a competition. New cars are fokking boring anyway compared to these old beauties. So back to your argument: an EV recoups the extra CO2 released during (battery) production between 1 and 2 years. Even if the energy mix is dirty, you have to consider that a power plant is way more efficient than an ICE. And, new (long-range) batteries are being developed as we speak, look up Toyota's plan for solid state. In any case, congratulations to this man for keeping these beautiful old cars alive.

This guy is really quite smart. I commend him for being able to build his own ECU that works on a wide array of cars. But I have to say that just smacking a ECU onto an old car won't make it perform as good as modern vehicles do, there is no variable valve timing, direct injection, forced induction, etc... being added. He's just bettering the engine control by adding a computer and fuel injection. Some of the last carburetor cars had carbs on them that worked so well that you would barely get a percentage of better fuel consumption / power / drivability by converting to an EFI system. I would however like to see more of how his ECU works, safety controls, safety protocols / modes and such. We really do take ECU's for granted, they do way more than most people realise.
@CmdrTobs
@CmdrTobs 2 ай бұрын
Agreed, but just a kit a eliminating carbs and having a 'criuse' closed loop lamda sensor mode as well as better idle control (which is what cars do a lot of the time in the developing world) it's worth it. I doubt his code is MISRA safe, but then these are old low reving cars and the ECU is just doing fuel and ignition on non-interfence engines. The local road quality poses more of a risk
