Should you build a Jiu-Jitsu game based on your body type? This is a common question students will ask themselves.
This is an extremely common practice that's applied via all skill levels of white to black belts that train BJJ.
In this video, I'll go into more detail about building your Jiu-Jitsu game based on your body type and a few things to watch out for.

I definitely did! It just make sense to do so. I'm the 4th archetype so it doesn't make sense for me to do for example go for double legs often cause most guys are bigger and heavier than me. There are strategies that are more ad hoc for me. Great video Chasen!

As a 6ft 190lb guy, it often feels like im a jack of all trades master of none. I'm the smallest of the big guys and the biggest of the small guys. Big guys force me to work my guard and the small guys force me into passing which seems like backward etiquette to me. But in my experience big guys stand and small guys sit. I'm not complaining about any of this but I think it makes it more difficult to specialize against someone who's body type was made for that particular game.

Actually no, for me there is not one game that answers everything. If I roll with one super heavy fat guy, I know he will try to crush me under his weight, I won't fight the same way that I fight with one energetic thin guy. The same way I adapt acccording to the distance as well. You cannot do only one guard and expect everything to resolve around it, I think.

As a smaller guy, once someone is getting into 40+lbs bigger then I’ll mostly sit to guard, because if I don’t know them/they’re new I don’t wanna mess around with that much weight, if it’s someone who’s experienced then they’re probably gonna take me down anyway so I might as well give guard a try

Yes! In RPGs certain races have better stats for different classes. If you want to be competitive it's best to min/max based on the class you're playing. But it might get a little boring sticking to the meta because you're just playing to win instead of really enjoying and learning all aspects of the game.

I am a 41 yo 250 white belt that wrestled year around thru college, the purple and blue belts I roll with are impressed with the speed which I can pass. That being said I prefer to work from positions where I am not crushing the smaller partners and that I am not comfortable in because I wish to improve. I love open guard with double sleeve and sleeve and collar probably because it is so different from what I am comfortable with. Being uncomfortable excites me because it gives me something to think about all week until my next roll!

I've always been looking for a video like this! I'm 4th stripe white belt 5'5 ~130 lbs 23 yo I'm strong for my size i guess and legs are short but I can be very fast (it sucks when I gas quick sometimes lol) and i always wanted a video explaining how I can use my size to my advantage. Turns out you're right what you said in the beginning where I would naturally start to develop my style based on what works and what doesn't bc to my surprise my style is basically exactly as you described lol I'm pretty much forced to attack every time (get to mount or the back asap)bc i don't have the luxury of sitting around in guard. My guard retention is good from open guard but terrible in closed guard -it's easy for the bigger guys to just pry me open. (Pause) I never really thought of trying butterfly as a main tactic I tried it very early on as a no stripe but I couldn't really get the hang of it. Haven't really used it much as it isn't taught in our fundamentals classes but I'll definitely look into it more now! I've recently realized armbars are something i can easily catch people with sometimes but my brain isn't used to the angles from bottom like that yet 💀 Sometimes i get myself in weird positions under big guys and end up doing some Craig Jones shit by accident cause I'm so flexible bottom side control to back take kinda shit Thank you for the video coach

5.8ft - 70kg - skinny frame - earlier I relied a lot on speed and scrambles. I used to be a closed guard player when I was a white and blue belt, but eventually found little success for subs after people become blue belts or higher. Built the game around Marcelo Garcia as back attack high percentage sub. Don't try too much arm in chokes like Darce or andaconda, guard pass to arm triangle from top is good. Don't rely on forcing kimura or americana - Kimura grip is good thou to transition to back rather than kimura subs. Worked more like Lucas Lipri shine to shine sweeps, butterfly sweeps, transitions to x guard sweep. Never got into dela riva. guard passing is more active, but the knee slide, or leg weave still works well, using my head more to pin them, but not much of a bodylock pressure passer. Not active enough to be a toreundo passer either. takedowns are still double leg, or single leg due to being very basic but also I can shoot lower than taller guys. Eventually will have to change them game due to being closer to my 40s, may just pack on weight and just be a fat pressure passer with gi chokes.

Wow I’ve been looking for answers to this exact question! Definitely subscribing. I’m 5’8, 180 lbs. I’ve realized that I’m more of a pressure player. But lately I’ve been trying to slow down my pace and working on my technique instead of using athleticism. I start by being a bottom player and using a sweep to establish top position. Then work to minimize spacing then submitting. One thing is everyone I go up against, they also like to start off at the bottom. I noticed when this happens I go into my normal mode of attacking with pressure. Do you know what I can do to continue to work my bottom game and do you have any tips for my body type?

As a leggy 6 foot 154 lb guy, i agree with your tall thin points. Some other things i notice comparing my build to other people of similar height and weight is the width of your shoulders and hips, neck length, and wrist circumference to me all seem to make a difference in what i can pull off vs what someone else can. Smaller wrist are easier to grip, longer necks are easier to choke, narrow shoulders are easier to head and arm choke (darce, triangle, etc), narrow hips are easier to get hooks in for back control. Short neck, thick wrists, and wide hips and shoulders seem to be an advantage across the board to me, but i could be wrong.

6ft 265lbs here, i'm a short and very stocky guy and the thing that has helped my skillset most recently is playing bottom, instead of my most effective game which is top deep water pressure, this is mostly good to do against people that i have a size advantage over to me, as it gives me more leeway to practice, doing this has won me competitions too, as i'm able to sweep bad positions better generally than most heavyweights, as they rely on the "who lands on top wins", i want to have an advantage over the people i compete against by improving my weakest area where they do not

37, 6'1 175, I noticed I use to love the triangle but now it's just a set up for armbar or omaplatha because I have to be more technical because of my long legs sometimes I have to compensate as well for the arm triangle. But I was playing closed guard a lot, spider, laso. I'm now exploring attacks from side control/north south and working on my pressure, weight distribution, and transitional movements

6'4" and apprx 300 lbs. I just made blue belt last December. I'm stronger than pretty much anyone in my gym, and if I actually had any technique I might do OK vs. some of these other people. It's not that I don't know stuff, it's just integrating things into my game and figuring it out that's the challenge. I don't know why you say most big guys don't have flexibility; I'm one of the most flexible people in my gym. I'm really quick for someone my size, but that's still less fast than most others there. I'm still building my game. My bottom game isn't great; mostly I'll try closed guard or half guard (especially lockdown). I'm all about trying to get around the other guy to take his back for a choke, or sweep. Top game isn't bad. I can break most people's closed guard, not too bad against half-guard, open guard gives me more problems than most. If I can get into kesa I can cook you there, maybe go to side control. Decent kimura and arm bar from side, or I can go gift wrap to take your back. My north/south chokes aren't horrible either, but they could use a lot of work.

I’ve been training for two years just got my blue belt. Wrestling is helping me a lot most the guys I train with are 210-260 and 5’11-6’8 so I don’t get much of a chance to use closed guard or triangles. I’m 6’0” 170 lbs with long limbs and a slighter build. Despite my weight, I think I’m often looked at as a lanky guard player…the total opposite is true. I train at a small MMA gym filled with former wrestlers with active amateur and professional fighters, so I get plenty of mat time with them. It’s all smesh, wrestle up, and “just stand up”. I miss out on training the fancier BJJ-specific guards and submissions with significant volume, but I can work for a kimura or a D’Arce/guillotine/anaconda from a lot of different positions. While I don’t fight, it’s also nice to get the occasional friendly reality check tap when I’m on bottom to remind me that I could be getting wailed on if strikes were in the mix. It’s definitely a unique environment, but it’s my favorite place I’ve trained. :)

I utilize alot of x guard, tripod sweeps, triangle chokes, anaconda chokes and head and arm chokes. Because of my wieght I tend to end up on bottom most of the time. Because of this I've become very crafty with escapes and leg pummbling. My downfall is when someone gets past my knees. Once my opponents start getting up in the 165+ range no matter what I do it feels like the weight of the world is preventing me from getting up. For the past 2 years I've really been working on my top pressure and control and have found that a floaty style has been the only thing that seems to be effective.

Honestly as a 6 foot 230-245 lb dude(summer exercise helps 😂) blue belt with a congenital spinal fusion I’ve spent a lot of time trying to survive/escape from the bottom of multiple positions. On top positions I know my weight has an advantage and feel it but on the bottom I feel it works the opposite and causes me to have to work more.

I'm 1.65m (5'5) and weigh between 82 to 84kg (180/185lbs) on average. I'm strong, with a thick back and legs, I trained Wrestling and Judo in Brazil for a few years. I have a good takedown game and control of positions on top. However, after earning my blue belt I started training a lot from bottom, especially in half guard. Today, at 32 years old and with a purple belt (I was supposed to be a black belt, but I had to stop a few times due to changes of residence and work), I feel like a complete grappler refining my main weapons and adding new weapons. I feel like I'm stronger than the vast majority of guys my weight and lighter. Faster and more mobile than heavier opponents. Because I have short legs it is more difficult to achieve some submissions, however because I am short I have a lower center of gravity which gives me more control and balance.

I'm a short and stocky guy in my early 30s white belt. My coach pulled me aside once during a class and basically gave me a free 1 on 1 class all on half guard. It made a huge difference from being smashed by most white belts to sweeping and taking the backs of all white belts and some blues. It got to a point where I'd catch someone in half guard and they'd say "da#$it!" Haha. I stopped when my gym closed during Corona but I'd like to get back in it. 2 lessons learned - body types play a big role in determining successful positioning. -even at white belt 1 on 1 classes can do a lot for you fast.

I think there is definitely a difference in how people will develop their games depending upon body type... but I think people limit their games themselves because of faulty beliefs about themselves, more so than their actual physical abilities will limit them. Just like you said, it's "performance based" . People get in the habit of continuing to use what made them "win" in class, and that often slows peoples ability to learn as well as limits the expansion of their game. Time and effort should absolutely be invested in learning to properly do as many different types of "moves" as possible, especially at blue belt and purple belt. Most of the time people think they can't do something due to their body type, it's really because they're doing it wrong (within reason). For instance if someone says they can't get their foot or knee in the spot they want, they often blame it on not being flexible enough, when is reality it's because they did not shift their hips to the proper position to accomplish the task.

I'm 6'4" and 180lbs. I abuse my lankiness without thinking. I don't prioritize body type, but I'm not fighting nature. Favorites: Sub - triangle Sweep - balloon Pass - longstep There's a lot of moves with dumb labels, like the Kimura being a "big man" move. Kimuras from triangles take no strength. Their posture is broken, they can't hide their arm, and it's isolated. The fundamentals can be adapted to any style or build. Body type is a factor, but it shouldn't be the focus of your game. Goals should be what your game is based on. My standup game is chains of throws that end in side control. The goal is to bypass the guard. My build doesn't affect the goal, and ouchi gari, a good move for my build, doesn't suit my goal.

Hi, Chasen, you are almost my exact body size and type. I'm 5'4, 155-160. What is your style? What do you play most when playing your "A" game? By the way, I'm a mid-level blue belt. I still experiment with everything and try not to narrow things down too much since I'm still not deeply experienced. I mostly play half-guard and when on top tend to gravitate towards the North-South position where I've been more able to control larger opponents.

Welcome to the tree stump club! On the bottom, I personally play a lot of open guard, specifically butterfly. I love getting sweeps and backtakes. Funny enough, my main attack now is triangles from the bottom. Top, I play mount. Once you learn to control and maintain it, the attacks that favor guys our size who are spider monkeys and allow us to take backs. You'll get rolled a lot in the beginning, but in the long term, it's more favorable than side mount. Side mount will always favor those with more mass, both offensively and defensively.

When I did bjj when I was younger at 18 5’8 120 pounds I had a top game based on pinning especially from side control and scarf hold bc I had to pin people to not get bucked off before any real offense. Big knee shield fan which integrated into a leglock game. Only subs I went for were chokes and leglocks bc I was too weak to get a good arm lock on a big dude. People struggle to muscle out of chokes and leglocks bc you can’t really work out your ankles. I only made it to blue belt though so I never quite made it out of the unskilled category.

As a white belt, I’m trying not to use my body type. At 5’9” 220lbs with at bench of 315lb and squat over 500lb, I have a tendency to try to use strength when I should be focused on skill. I end up with a short term advantage that quickly gives way to exhaustion and a compromised position. In the end I’m not only defeated but worn out. It’s easy to tell yourself to chill until your pinned and can’t breath, then the hulk comes out. Quickly followed by another pin and a hulk tapping. Skill over body type - every time.
