I don't understand what these manufacturers don't understand about sticking with the tried and true formula, it's like they're sabotaging themselves on purpose. 5% or less of the population in North America wants to have to wait an hour for a charge, the rest of us that need to get to places are fine with gassing up for 5 minutes.

@CarCareNut 13:00 VW use rear drum brakes on all their MEB EVs because main motor is at rear. Like all cars most braking is on the front wheel, only ~20% is done at the rear wheels. With the main motor at rear wheel that limited braking is mainly done by motor regen, so rear brakes are used very little. Hence rear drum brakes is good choice, less rust and less service.

I’m 1,300 miles into my own “range test”, a much larger sample. And. I live in a climate zone with cold winters - last week was mostly single-digits Fahrenheit. Additional context: I’m a six-year veteran BMW i3 driver, and I’m a defensive driver who is usually ~5 miles per hour over the limit and not loitering in the passing lane. Respectfully, your range figure can only happen by operating the car foolishly or ignorantly. It’s thirties Fahrenheit today, and I have up to 224 miles range at 80%. If you don’t live in far-flung isolation with no fast chargers on route to destinations, the range is fine. From central Pennsylvania, I can get to NYC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, DC, the ocean, etc, etc, without stopping to charge on the way. And, fast charging is becoming plentiful.
@GDuckful5 күн бұрын
I can confirm that. We drive in Germany the 1st Buzz version which is slightly shorter and with even smaller battery (78 kWh) . We get now with winter temperatures around 150-200 miles for 80% range. That's not great but sufficient if you only occasionally go longer distances. Maybe he did several short distance trips in cold conditions to get the range below 90 miles: for the first few miles when you need to heatup interior and battery the consumption is easily 50-80% higher than long-distance average.

I have a 2018 VW e-Golf, which is a battery-only design as well. It has a 34 KW battery and comes with a heat pump. There is no active heating or cooling for the battery. This is meant to be primarily a city-use car. In the summer, I get about 250km range. Heating the cabin in a Canadian winter drops the range by up to 50%. I park outside 24x7 so when it gets really cold, the battery is that cold too. Charging is slower then, but the car has always started except last winter when we hit -38°C and the 6-year old 12V lead acid battery couldn't provide enough power for the car's computers. I am a loyal fan and friend of your channel, driving and fixing cars for 45 Years. I agree with all your points. I will add my DEAL BREAKER points. 1) low range (i have seen other reviews of highway range). Even at 60 mph, the range was 1.5 miles per KWH! They stopped for recharging every 60 miles. 2) Rear drum brakes. For a car that will require close to no maintenance, rear drum brakes is ancient technology. I had a Honda Odyssey for 22 years, and I hated the drum brakes! 3) The second row seats ARE NOT REMOVABLE! For a fun van that has a heritage as a travel/ camping vehicle, people would need to make the rear a flexible "cargo hauler" for camping and living in the bus. My old Honda Odyssey could removed all the rear seats, and have a completely flat floor for hauling anything in the rear. and finally, 4) The price. For a limited use vehicle (due to low range, and extreme size and weight), this van costs as much as 2 minivans. The IQ BUZZ does not shine as either a nimble neighborhood child/ shopping mall hauler, or long trip traveler. I hope that VW makes some changes for it to be a great multi-use hauler.

I was seriously thinking about getting one; but when the reviews started coming out and they all said the same thing; that the range was awful, I decided not to. For the price of this vehicle it should get 300 miles of range at least. Until they get a better drive train/ battery system I wouldn't go near it.

3 biggest problems with this vehicle are (1) price, (2) range, and (3) VW crappy software. Those 3 things make this a bad purchase even though it's super cool. Also, the 3rd row only seats 2 so of course it's roomy. And so folks know I'm not biased, I owned 2 e-Golfs and they were fantastic for what they are.

Will it be AWD? Hopefully uses a motor in the rear. I think being FWD with its relatively thirsty, but strong, ICE V6 has cost them many sales. It was a great opportunity to skim Sienna sales. Primarily because you can't find a Sienna to buy unless you wait 2+ years and then know that your patience was rewarded with having paid far too much for it. When I was ready, I wanted one, badly. A base. Told me a delivery date was 3 years away "possibly within 30 months". Then I watched Toyota add $5000 to its MSRP for 2 consecutive years. Which soured me away from Toyota basically. And couldn't believe how uncomfortable the front seats were in a new Toyota pickup in a showroom where I was testing a used (overpriced) Sienna. I think Toyota has relatively few vehicles that interest me other than I'd still love to have a new Base (no sunroof) Sienna. But I bought a competitor's. Toyota should be careful they engage in much more effrontery or they're going to lose even more once loyals.

Love the review, you may want to consider talking about curb weight for EVs and how that may impact tire wear. The id buzz weighs as much as a standard range F-150 lightning at 6000lbs
@waynerussell64015 күн бұрын
From "Users' experiences of tyre wear on electric vehicles A survey and interview study" June 2022 Report number: 1126AAffiliation: Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute: "most professional users (Taxi, Bus, Rental) experience similar tyre wear as for ICEVs." "Tires on a modern electric car will wear down much slower than in a car with a traditional internal combustion engine. This is due to good traction control. The driver assist systems reduce slipping by utilizing the electric motor's rapid power adjustment. This system is much quicker than in ICE vehicles, where it is based on braking and limiting engine RPM," Nokian Tyres' Development Manager Mikko Liukkula.
@garbagevision95155 күн бұрын
@@waynerussell6401 thanks for sharing this. This is interesting but I still have questions around what driving behavior one has (perhaps 'professional drivers' drive a bit more conservatively?) and what kinds of modes the vehicle is in that impacts tire wear (e.g. rivian's conserve mode increases wear). See also the articles "EV owners: OE tires falling drastically short of treadwear expectations" (2023) and "Where the rubber meets the road: Emerging environmental impacts of tire wear particles and their chemical cocktails" (June 2024) In the study you reference ("Users' experiences of tyre wear on electric vehicles A survey and interview study"), the summary also says for Private Users "Approximately 39% of owners of EVs, 27% of owners of PHEVs and 15% of owners of HEVs experienced faster tyre wear in their vehicles, compared with tyre wear in ICEVs."
@waynerussell64015 күн бұрын
@ Clearly driving style impacts this. However now tyre manufacturers are developing tyres specifically for BEVs with different construction to reduce wear. The tradeoff is in driving comfort, handling, efficiency and cost. It should be mentioned that BEVs are not necessarily heavier as EG a direct performance comparison of a BMW M3 and a Tesla MP has similar curb weight.

The problem is VW has been plugged with years of building crappy unreliable vehicles that become money pits as they age. Their parts are expensive and for any extensive repairs you need a specialist. The last few years they put all their eggs into the EV basket and unfortunately, that was the wrong move. They should’ve been focusing on hybrids like Toyota, which are massively growing in popularity. The masses just aren’t ready for EV yet. Our electric infrastructure is not up to mass adoption of EV use nor is our infrastructure for EV charging stations in the technology just isn’t there yet to give people comfort on whether or not they can charge up their vehicles or where they can charge up their vehicles and if they can go on a long trip without worrying. Unfortunately, our infrastructure for EV charging stations is not doing good. There’s charging stations that are proprietary, mini or vandalized or don’t work or in Metro areas overused and it takes forever to get in line to get your car charged. Many people are afraid to charge their cars indoors because a lot of manufacturers have disclaimers that you shouldn’t charge your car in a garage. EV/lithium ion batteries have had serious problems here with catching fire spontaneously on ship containers, on storage units, and parking garages, etc. Even in Europe and some Scandinavian countries, they won’t allow EV’s on ferries due to the risk of fire and that’s countries that openly likethe whole EV concept.
