I am a firm believer in buying the bike you want, and then learning how to ride it. Start slow, practice, read and learn what you can. The passion for the bike that you really like will keep you engaged in that process.

Just purchased my first motorcycle at the beginning of this year a 2023 Streetg glide. My uncles ride road glides and although my bike is big the road glide fairing felt bigger or further back which made me not confident. So far I put 650 miles on it and I’ve dropped it one time coming to a stop in the parking lot with the forks turned. Since then there are things I’ve learned just like you said and I will say for my first bike I’m glad I got something that would motivate me to ride and learn.

My first two motorcycles were a used Kawasaki and a used Honda. They were like in the 400cc range. That was almost 30 yrs ago. My goal was to eventually get a Harley and the Lord provided. My first Harley was a used sportster (1987?) I bought in the early or mid 90s. Then I got a new 1998 dyna wide glide. After that was a used 2000 ultra classic. Now I have a 2019 street glide special. I remember my (cool) uncle had a goldwing in the 70s/80s. Him telling stories of trips and camping got me thinking. That would be cool to do. I have been doing it and loving it. Looking forward to the next video.

I bought my first bike last week. 2014 street glide. Honestly Tall I was of course nervous at first but after my first ride it went away the bike rides it self. I love it. I'm going to take the Harley class here in Indiana so I can get my endorsement. Also to learn of course. I know from listening to your videos there is a ton I don't know even though I feel like I was born to ride.

Lot of good information in this video! Tall my first bike EVER was a 2020 street glide. You were a inspiration behind that. I did take SO MANY precautions tho and even made a video on it bcz t was looking for videos before I bought my bike. It can be done tho, to buy the bike you want as ur fist bike

Great video. My suggestion was always start small and slow - especially if you are starting on a sport bike... Folks really underestimate the power of a liter sport bike. Having recently made the switch to a tourer (getting old I guess lol), I find that's more about the technique of riding - so I can see a beginner starting off with the tourer/bagger they want, but just taking it slow. Most important thing though is ride ride ride.

You are speaking nothing but truth. I really didn't know my bike until I rode from Illinois to New Jersey. When I bought the ultra, I did not know that bike until I put a 3-hour ride there in a 3-hour ride back.

Hey Tall! My wife is learning how to ride and I got her an Iron 883 to start with. She now has her license and is slowly going on the road. She knows eventually and can already tell she needs a more powerful bike. Her next bike will be a cruiser or maybe touring.

Hello Tall from eastern NC. I love your videos and appreciate how you share your experiences. I ride my own 17 Street Glide and started out on a 1200 Sportster because I wanted to be sure it would “stick”. My husband and I ride long distances at least once a year. I never dreamed I’d love it as much as I do. Arkansas Pig Trail is my favorite trip so far. Going to Sturgis for the first time this year. Thanks again. Looking forward to your “Riding in the Rain“ video. Keep Gliding!

Started on HD883 and still have it. Upgraded to the bike I wanted last year Road King!!I’m not as confident on it as I was with my 883. Doing a lot of practice to get used to the weight of the bike. I will ride it daily and get my confidence back! Thanks for making this video Tall. I watch all your stuff and I appreciate your knowledge.

I just went through this dilemma. I’m a new rider, 2 months now. All the videos say start on a small bike, my buddy who has been riding his whole life said get the bike you want. I bought a 2022 Honda rebel 500 and taught myself to ride. A month later I bought a 2023 Indian challenger. I like the Honda and I think it was a good choice to learn how to ride but I out grew it so fast I wish I would’ve just bought the Indian first.

Great video Tall! I started riding late in life (five years ago). Had the dealer deliver my first bike (2018 Road Glide Special) to my house, since I didn't have all of my gear onhand and knew I wasn't proficient enough to ride the bike home 50 miles. I'm 6'4" and 250lbs....so getting a smaller motorcycle wasn't an option for me. I spent the first month of ownership riding in my neighborhood and in parking lots. Ventured out to backroads in my local area for a couple of more month. Did my first group ride at about 9 months of ownership and never looked back. I ride year round and I've learned alot. I've seen people make dump mistakes while riding....so the more information like this we share...... the more informed the whole community will be.

Yeah he’s right . If you start small you’re going to outgrow that bike faster than you can most likely purchase another. So start off with a bigger bike and grow into it rather than start small and out grow it. I started on a Yamaha 250 v star then jumped to a Yamaha FZ 1 000 cc sport bike then went to a 1500 goldwing aspencade and now I’m currently on a 2022 Harley roadking special 114.

In my opinion, there is no such thing as a beginner bike…. there are bikes that you begin on. My first bike was a Honda VTX 1800. I’m 6-4 200 plus. No way i was riding a 400 cc rebel for example. I started off slow, parking lot practice and then slowly got out there. Get what you want, learn the basics, go slow and gradually build your own pace. Ride safe!

Just got my first bike nearly 2 weeks ago. I road in the rain and man it was different for sure! Need a full face and a jacket because rain hurts. Also shoes were soak and wet. But I got some ride time in. Somewhat scary but you just have to ride your ride and you'll be fine.

The bike I really want is considered a beginner’s bike. I never thought about motorcycle’s until the LiveWire electric motorcycle which led me Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650 as the best value and look to cruise around my area. I’m not big on traveling, just hitting the beach, downtown Detroit and back and forth to work.

That live wire is perfect for what you want to use it for. Those live wires only have approx a 100 mile battery life before a recharge so traveling touring would not be feasible for that bike but to zip around town hit a club or bar or run errands or go to work that live wire is perfect. I’m not a tourer either so I could use a bike like that . I have a roadking special and it suits my needs fine.

Buy a smaller bike than a full blown Harley bagger as ur first bike. Riding a motorcycle like a BOSS at slow speed is a LEARNED SKILL. Any knucklehead can go straight and fast….and based on my observations that is stretching it. Why make learning harder than it has to be?
