Which E90 did you get? And did you have any problems with it so far?

Tekky Two A 318i with no idrive, which I kind of regretted later on. I do have problems, primarily leaking oil. Took it to shop twice, didn’t help. Planning on taking to different shop soon. For now I have to keep adding motor oil every 800-1000 km. Which is a hassle, but I guess a lot cheaper than spending another €200 at the shop with no result. Also some sensor problems which occur on long trips.

Firoz Hakakha sorry for the delay, I had a few rough years where my oil change intervals were beyond 10K miles. But I changed the brake pads, brake sensors, cabin and engine filters, battery (119K) water-pump + thermostat (150K), ignition coils (129k), spark plugs (129K, 208K), tensioner pulley (around 135K), valve cover and oily filter gasket (160K), shocks, then lowering shocks and springs around 213K. Outside of those necessities, the dealership gave me a complimentary transmission service after some jerking arose around 155K & addressed a parasitic drain on the battery around 219K Lowered the car on Koni orange and Eibach Pro’s and threw 19” Alpina replicas on.
@soILLitsADVISED4 жыл бұрын
kevin yeah I have the xi/xdrive model (coined xdrive in ‘09). The stock axles held up pretty well (213K). Absolutely excellent through the east coast winters. Hit a random pothole on a backroad sometime last summer. Tried to replace with low mileage used genuine axles to get the same quality and longevity, both left and right went bad in a matter of months. Cheaper aftermarket parts seem to do the trick for my lowered setup (Koni orange + eibach pro kit + aftermarket axles). One axle is GKN, can’t remember the other. Dealer wanted $2K for the front end axle assembly. I’ll be switching the shocks to Bilstein as I believe the ride is a bit softer.

My son picked up an ‘08 328i with the six speed manual transmission for $3,500. It had 175k miles but super clean inside and out, 2 owner car, great service history, no wrecks, clean Carfax, and all common failure points had been done along with some other recent work. He bought a Foxwell NT510 OBD scanner with the BMW software which has come in very handy. After purchasing we did the oil change (Castrol Edge extended performance), transmission fluid (Amsoil) and rear diff fluid; all for around $100. Recently replaced the starter. $150 for a brand new Bosch starter, $40 for the needed gaskets and bolts. Was a lot of stuff to remove to get to it, but not overly complex and not intimidating. Was about a 4 hour job, and I’m not a mechanic. Has been a great car for him so far and is a lot of fun to drive. You get a lot of car for the money and is a very solid value if you are going to do most of the maintenance and service yourself. N52 engine with manual transmission seems to be a solidly reliable drivetrain from my research. N54 a bit more of a roll of the dice.

@shannoncrawford7212 Жыл бұрын
@@i_read_bad_reviews I owned a first Gen G35 sedan, automatic, back in the day. I really liked it. It felt like it had more power than the 328i, but the BMW is more fun to drive “spirited” on a curvy road. Of course a manual coupe G35 might be a different story. I’m guessing the Infinity would be more reliable overall, but if older/higher mileage both will likely eventually need some maintenance and repair attention. His is well over 200k miles now. We have since replaced the battery, coil packs/plugs, and did the valve cover gasket. His coolant reservoir also has a slow leak so will be replacing that soon.

Old comment reply I now but Keep your ear out for chain rattle on that N47 as it's a very common pig of a job to rectify/preventively change (circa 70k miles) It's rear mounted and a new engine if it fails which they are known to do with frightening frequency if oil hasn't been changed every 5-6k regardless of what that stupid long-life factory recommendation says. I was looking for a 330d but avoiding the later N57 as it's the bigger brother to the N47 with the same chain setup but because of it's higher oil capacity the chains seem to last a bit longer. I'm sticking to what I know and going for the older M57 powered front chain, iron lump e90.

All spot on!! At this point, a good clean and honest E90 that has been looked after offers extremely good and sensible value at the moment. Okay, cost of parts generally is good over there, but may not necessarily be great in other regions, not great where I am, but then nothing is. And with that said, what's the alternative, pay a fortune on a new car that is vastly inferior other than just being new? Sure, newer cars are vastly more economical, but how long until you see the financial benefit after paying so much for said new car? Yes, these cars are temperamental and can frustrate a person when they develop a niggle, but with people like yourself and other passionate DIY'ers out there, there's a wealth of helpful videos and DIY guides to help perform these repairs or give insight as to what is going on with your car. If you want a no nonsense easy to own car, then maybe a BMW isn't for you, but if you want a driver's car and you are willing to just put some basic effort into keeping your hand on it, the E90 with any of the N52 engines is the way to go!! I do agree as well with regards to the interior - mine is dove grey, it's not nearly as bad as that tan or cream interior, but first prize is the black interior!! Keep up the good work Nathan!

@@kavindumalshan9379 No. The issue with the timing chain often comes up when discussing N47 BMW cars. Personally, I think the drivers are more to blame than the cars. I bought my first BMW in 2014, it was a 2009 320d with the N47 engine 177hp. It had 140k km when I bought it, and more than 250k km when I sold it. I never for a moment had any issues with it. The current car I have now drives like a dream (I must admit that I have changed quite a lot of parts preventively, but nothing was broken). The car is a fuel efficient compact executive car, not an M car or a F1 car. People drive them too hard for what they are built to handle, and they change their oil once every 30 000km which is also bad (especially for the chain). If you just drive it responsibly and do frequent oil changes with the proper oil this car will take you far. I know people with 370k km on their 3 series and it runs like there is no tomorrow...

I have at work a chevy 2500 that has 250,000 miles on it works great and has cost the company less than 500 dollars in maintenance in the last three years. If a vehicle is in good condition then miles don't matter. Note the exception to this rule is vehicles that are particularly prone to problems like e60 m5 or something like that. Easiest alternator replacement I have done in 35 years. I need to do the oil filter housing gasket. The trans filter and gasket was easy. The water pump and thermostat on the X-drive was a challenge trying to get those hoses connected when you can't touch or even see them, was a trick. I hope that is the last time.

good to hear. Is it difficult to replace the water pump on these yourself, for the average guy? Mine seems to be working, but I keep hearing the same thing from people that they break. I have almost this exact same car but mine is 2011 328i E90 M-Sport. I like it a lot.

Todd Ericson It took me 3 hrs, including the thermostat/housing, which should be done at the same time. Easier than most cars out there tbh. Buy a pierburg pump, and an OEM thermostat/housing. You’ll need to buy an Inverted Torx socket set ($15 on amazon).. I’m an Ex VW tech, BUT anyone mechanically inclines can do it. These things are easier to work on than Chevy’s IMO. Far easier than a Ford or VW/Audi... Watch a couple different videos and dive in! PS: The cooling system self bleeds with the electric pump! I don’t know of any other brand that does that!
@Gturkey725 жыл бұрын
I agree, I'm a former Ford Tech and these are much easier to work on. High quality bolts, they dont break or strip. Just follow some KZbin videos and you can handle a majority of your issues.

@@funfun8095 i generally don't hear anything bad about the F10 5 series so i don't know why you're saying dont buy it. I always hear it's best to get the 535i 6 cylinder and not the 4 cylinder.
