When we buy a used collection we must take our time to value items properly, test any locos or other working items than maybe on offer and of course, consider electrical safety! Apologies for one or two sound issues in this video. The collection shown was purchased from a friend, on trust, with agreement on a value after the fact. It is not always that way! Take your time, value with your head, not you're heart !

12:13 - This coach, as far as I know is an H0 scale model of a DB (Deutsche Bundesbahn) coach, made by Rivarossi. As you may have pointed out, Rivarossi is an Italian make and they have primarily made H0 scale items, as H0 is popular on mainland Europe and also in North America. One piece of advice I would give to anyone is don't confuse H0 with 00. They might share the same gauge, 16.5mm but H0 is built to a scale of 3.5mm : 1ft, compared to 00 which is built to a slightly larger scale of 4mm : 1ft (out of the two, H0 is the most accurate).

Thank you for the update on the coach. I did point out to my friend when I first looked at this entire group that it was as assortment of items acquired, rather than a collection that could be used. Many thanks for taking the time to view the video and leave a helpful comment :)

Nice haul that you have there Roger! As with anything things are worth whatever people are willing to pay, what may be one man's trash could be another's treasure! Agreed with regards to checking everything carefully before making a decision, yet again another great video thank you

Great video and good points. Looks like a nice haul, too. In the end, the #1 rule is "keep it cordial." They don't have to sell at your price, and you don't have to buy at their price, so negotiate nicely and peacefully, or agree not to deal.

Depends what you want, I personally only buy what I want but would buy a collection if an item in it I wanted and the total value covers what I want. If I were to buy this collection when I owned a modelshop I'd value it at around £125 however things are worth whatever someone is willing to pay. Most 2nd hand track especially steel has little to no value the exception being excellent condition pointwork but even then you have to be very careful as it may look ok but electrically faulty. On safety both controllers with plugs on would fail any safety test as the plugs without insulation on live and neutral pins are illegal to sell/exchange and if you got a shock the person selling it (or possibly giving it away) would be liable however if you own that type of plug they are perfectly legal to use.

All very valid points and it is good to get the insight from those who are or have been in the trade. You are correct about electrical safety. I was of course, speaking from the point of view of someone who purchased items potentially for their own use. I would not be selling items that did not meet legislation. Thank you for viewing and taking the extra time to comment :)

I have bought several non runner lots on ebay . Very rarely can i not get them running well with a good service . Make sure the body is good thats the hard bit to repair for me . Wheel linkages can be a nightmare on old Hornby dublo .

It is always a gamble but you right in all that you say. This collection was slightly different in that it was part business but I was also helping out a friend :)

Looks like a reasonable buy. I personally always take a 9v battery to test locos before parting with any cash!

Great tip for anyone buying to take the 9v battery. I normally do so myself but this is a collection from a friend and conducted on trust but it is worth noting we do not always have that luxury. Many thanks for viewing and commenting

Interesting video. Looks like you got a good selection of items. I do occasionally pick up job lots with a view to taking my time and selling on the majority of items separately. As a general rule of thumb I use the following low valuations of £20 per tender loco/large diesel, £10 per smaller diesel or 0-6-0 tank engines, £5 per 0-4-0 tank engines. Coaches I value at £5 per coach and wagons at £2.50 per item. If stock is more modern and has NEM pockets etc then I will value items more highly. Steel track I don’t tend to give any value to as it’s not worth a lot, but it will sell. Using my typical valuation system I would estimate value of the whole lot around the £250 to £300 mark. That will be on the low side because some items can vary a lot in price.

Well not far off but I won't state what was paid it was part business, part just helping clear some items for friend. You are right that steel track no value these days and of course, when valuing any collection of models I think it is also important to decided which items will be sold on and which, if any, are being kept for the buyer's own use.

Good points Roger, I also remind them that, ebay is a fickle thing and what you see stuff Up for is different to what sold prices are, then the old chesnut, so why arn`t You selling it on Ebay then. Also depends on wether your buying to keep most of it or turn it over so it will cover what you spent.

Roger, most enjoyable - thank you!👍 *_Ultimately something is worth only what you are prepared to pay for it based on do you want or need some of these items?_* One item I spotted of significant interest was the Murgatroyd Chlorine bogie tanker (@7.40). 😎 However, the exploding boxcar @10.00 can be entertaining - used place a toy gun cap (if can you still buy these) underneath the hammer for extra effect (the boxcar looks complete).......⚡ The Triang conflat with three limestone 'L'-type top-loading /bottom discharge containers (@10.57) takes me back a good few years.🙂

@@StBlazeyModelWorld My recollections were Murgatroyd being based at Elworth & Sandbach in Cheshire (it became part of Brunner Mond and therefore ICI). In terms of the Southern Region, Chlorine was convey to the paper mills at New Hythe in Kent. 👍

Looks like a great Haul Roger. Without knowing what you paid for it, can't say if it was worth it. But with a bit of work a lot of it could be sold for good money. It depends on whether you are buying it for your own collection or to sell. Also, Just remember... Hornby today has no link to Frank Hornby's models from the early days. Quality and value was good back then... Just saying. Happy Modelling.

You are quite right about Hornby....obviously I had a senior moment there lol. I know it was a bit tricky me asking for comments when I won't say what was paid, I just wanted to encourage poeple to think a bit before they get involved in "gold rush" moment :) Many thanks for commenting

Not sure if you are aware or not but the audio pops in and out for a second or 2 at a time in various places... I have purchased a few bulk deals advertised and sometimes wondered if I got it for a good price or not.. but at the end of the day, we all have to be happy with our purchases... That looks like a good collection but it would depend on the price that the other person wanted and then the price you paid for it.. but with several locos track and rolling stock, it seems like a good buy. Also, something I do with the extra items that I do not want like 300 controllers etc... I sell them to get some money back from what I spent on the bulk lot. I have also bought some stated non-runners and then with a bit of TLC and a bit of soldering or just putting things back together correctly and a service the item runs perfectly and then resold. I also take a 9V battery with me to test the locos, I also check wheel movement on locos and rolling stock, there are some basic checks to do when looking at the items to know whether they are runners or repairs or just parts... Have a bit of knowledge of what you are buying and the prices on eBay or marketplace.. you can also do a quick check to see what that item was sold for recently on eBay by doing a sold search on that item, that will give you an idea of the price for that item or each item if the seller is happy for you to do some checks while there looking at the lot. If they are pushy making you make a decision and buy now or do not want to let you look at the items in a bit more detail it means to me that there is somethign not right with the lot and I would walk away...

Many thanks for viewing and leaving a comment. The reason why I did not reveal the amount paid was that this a transaction with a personal friend rather than a more "straight forward" business deal. The gentleman concerned is also a viewer of the channel. IN hindsight, it would have been better for me to explain that more fully in the video and I am sorry if this left you disappointed in the overall video.
