Why can’t I find trains lots like this at the Goodwill??? You have hundreds of dollars worth of N scale there. Looks like an even mix of early era N scale and most recent releases. My guess is a family of the deceased was cleaning out a house and simply donated the lot without bothering to sell them on their own. A couple things to point out…the Union Pacific diesel with the five axle configuration is a Fairbanks Morse C-Liner. The reason there are three axles in the back was to support the weight of the steam heating equipment for the passenger consist behind it. Thus this is a passenger engine. The freight version of this type had the traditional 4 axle configuration.It’s a very early Atlas model that was actually made for them by Riverossi in Italy. The motor sits atop the front truck at a vertical angle. It won’t hurt to give the motor bearing a drop of Labell 108 oil before you test run it. You can’t miss the bearing…it is visible right in the center of the motor right on top. The nice thing about some of those old Atlas cars with the old style (rapido) couplers, is you can easily pull the bolster pins holding the trucks to the car frame and replace them with newer Microtrains or Atlas trucks that have the modern knuckle couplers. Great pile of trains there!

Got a box like that at the monthly flea market. All NIB vintage steam and diesel. Paid 300 and didn't complain, it was very heavy. One of best deals of 2023 for us.

The Bluford Shops caboose is probably the best thing you have in there. I have three of their cabooses.

About $250 used market, possibly $300. Sadly most of the cars are $5 used, but Scale Trins, Trainworx and Athearn are $20-25 used price. The steam locos are 40 year old trainset level at $10 if they run. The Atlas GP30 is $40, and the VO-1000 is about $70. Didn't catch what you paid, so not sure if a good deal or not.

I inherited close to 300 n scale trains that I’d love to sell. Only some in boxes the rest were bubble wrapped and packed in boxes in a closet. I wish your shop was out west. I’m in Los Angeles. Is there any value if they don’t have boxes?

Probably family inherited it and didn't want to bother selling it and I can understand Ebay can be hard to sell and hobby stores may not be nearby. My area has zero hobby stores that sell trains the only store here are stores that sell comics n stuff, the last train shop closed in covid sadly cause the owner passed away

that sure is a nice collection of n scale items. Try to get the seller to use bubble plastic so that you get all these clear boxes in good shape. The boxes with blue insert are old atlas cars and probably some collectors can buy them. They are old, could even go back to the 70s. Minitrains and ahm also are from the same period. some of them have nice boxes ! good luck with your shop !

Very nice!! I can tell you right now that Goodwill is certainly not a place to be finding model trains. I have only seen it two times where people may donate their models to something like Goodwill or some other place similar but everyone knows that Goodwill is not a place to be selling model trains because hobby shops are much better but still it’s sort of nice to buy model trains there once in a while if someone wants to get rid of a model and then you get a locomotive and maybe a couple pieces of rolling stock for a really cheap price.
