Practically, you’re still more likely to survive running to cover and escaping than trying to engage them that far. -Find them (they already found you) -Get your firing solution (or immediately engage with swag at best, which frankly isn’t a terrible option) -get effective fires on target (hopefully before they do) Not saying you shouldn’t engage in LR training, as a discipline, or consider it a potential capability, I think it’s incredibly valuable for that assuming you’re on a moral walk. Just that for self defense (rol or wrol frankly) and an extreme range scenario, you’re probably best getting out of there and being a bad target than lying still, getting stable, and returning fire on someone that’s already stable and oriented on you or those you love. Granted, if wrol or no practical way to get help, you can always maneuver and re-engage after BC is successful, if there is an active threat in the area to you and yours that’s already demonstrated a lack of care for human life, now that LR and field craft skill set might be valuable, but staying alive is job 1

I'm a veteran and understand a vast majority of the upfront terms and practices. The way things are articulated in explained throughout videos is amazing. I once went hog hunting with a couple of buddies and borrowed a setup similar to Micah’s (Less the Red Dot). I took a free standing shot on a hog at about 300 yards and it dropped on impact. What I didn’t know is there was a 225 lb hog laying in the brush about 15 feet away from me. Immediately after taking the first shot, it jumped up and charged me. Not having the red dot or training to use an 8x24 scope at 10/15 ft and closing, I rotated the rifle a few degrees and tried using the bare body as a form of iron sights. We never could tell if I hit it but I did scare it enough to stop charging and B-Line another direction. I was able to drop it shortly after, once it was far enough away for me to use the sight effectively, but I swore on that day when I built my DMR I would be adding a canted/top mount red dot for these situations, and until then, carrying my handgun. Edit for clarification: The 8x24 was built for the range, I just didn’t have anything of my own at the time. I look forward to going back with a proper setup though. I shoot 556 with an LVPO OR red dot but will build my 308 with a secondary because I prefer not having to take my hand off the rifle.
@BullsMahunny3 ай бұрын
The handgun should always be apart of any kit regardless of the weapon you have with you. You never know what will happen to your primary whether it be, as you mentioned, not being quite trained on it or if it/the sight breaks in some way.

LPVO with a true 1x, Absolute Co-Witness. That solves your problem right there. And the Co-Witness is just for redundancy, not necessary if you have an etched reticle not reliant on batteries. I use a Mark 6, but my eyesight is good enough that 6x is more than enough magnification for me to shoot the maximum effective range for game, but you can go as high as a 1-10 with a Razor 3 and still have true 1x... it's unnecessary overkill to have an 8-24. That level of magnification is only necessary when hunting "the most dangerous game," but not conducive to ethical shots on regular game, because it's pushing you past 1k yards where a light breeze can change a perfect shot into inhumane cruelty.
@jcows123 ай бұрын
8x24 for hunting is not a good option indeed. I would recommend 3x9 or 4x12 it's not too much magnification in close and it will get you out as far as anyone should be shooting ethically.

I’m a big fan of the DMR. They can also act as battle rifles, are cheaper than more precise rifles, and let’s face it even with a $20K rifle/scope most of us can’t afford or don’t have the range to train at 1000+ yards. A reliable hit at 600 is about as good as most of us are realistically going to be able to shoot. In a Red Dawn situation only a few of us are hitting at a mile but being more accurate against a turret gunner behind a shield or take out a radio operator to initiate an ambush is the point of the DMR.
@robertfota4109Ай бұрын
Exactly. 600 yards is the farthest I've ever gotten to shoot, and it was 1 day in my life so far lol. Normally, 300 yards is the longest I can access. My 556 can do 300 all day long, as can my 308 of course. At 600 yards, my AR10 was ringing a 12 inch steel gong about 75-80% of the time, using wolf steel cased 150 grain 308. I also can rock that AR10 up close if need be. It's not as built for that vs my AR-15, but I'll take a bit less rapid rate of fire if it means hitting with 3-0-hate

In 2002 I built an FAL rifle, back when 200 round battlepacks of 7.62 NATO were $18 and mags GI mags were $6/ea. It was during the assault weapon ban, so ARs were still super rare. That FAL was my rifle to rule the world… right up until I had to carry it, shoot it offhand, or carry ammo for it, or pick it up after firing a few mags and brand my skin. I’m a big dude, but a big 7.62 NATO is a lot to hump around. Outside of having a prepared position and a defined field of fire, I don’t really want one. BTW, the FAL has an adjustable gas system just like the whiz-bang DMRs shown in the video.

In the British army we have the L129A1 Sharpshooter Rifle, which is probably a knock off of an American system knowing us.. And back in Afghanistan when we were having engagements from 300 meters to 800 meters this rifle was invaluable.. We were getting hit by a single PKM position to our front and a Soviet era Underslung Grenade Launcher from our half right, but the PKM thought he was safe, our GPMG rounds were bouncing off his BUND line and he would simply wait for it to stop and engage us again.. But we noticed that he had a young dude on a moped going to his position then leaving again before re-engaging us, and we noticed in our optics he was going with a towel sized rag with PKM link wrapped in it, wrapped around his body and leaving without it, and by British LOE we could engage him too as he was supplying the gunner with link.. Step forward the casual hero, or me with my L129A1 and the next time we saw that kid deliver link and leave without it, at 500 meters, moving target, on a moped, moving at speed from right to left, I lead him and it took 6 shots, but the 6th saw the young talib pitch forward holding his stomach, fall off his moped, roll onto his feet and start running, before reaching the wall, stopping, sliding down it and expiring.. And guess what, Mr PKM ran out of ammo and had to pop smoke and bug out.. Couldn't have done it without the DMR gents.. Invaluable indeed.

I constantly get reminded about my decision 5 years ago to drop 5.56 and go all in on a 7.62x51 chambered Armalite AR10a. It was the best idea to own a battle rifle You own so many capabilities that 5.56 can not touch. Yes, 5.56 has low recoil. Just buy a badass muzzle brake, and .308 feels similar to a stock 5.56. Just the barrier smashing capabilities are worth the extra weight in rifle and ammunition. You definitely feel confident using a battle rifle cartridge instead of an intermediate caliber varmit cartridge. Long story, longer... In my mind, a DMR would have a minimum of 20" barrel. A sick hi-tech muzzle brake. Legs that cantilever. Thermal Scope or a powerful Leopold Scope or a Night Vision Scope or All of the above. So you can use them all for different missions as needed. A DMR needs to be mobile. It's not a sniper rifle. But it can be used for sniping, indirect fire, and smashing fortified battlefield positions. That was the problem we had in Afghanistan. We couldn't reach the enemies way out on the tops of hills or across mountain valleys. T DMR Rifle started to be used. They brought out old M14s and set them up as DMR to be able to hit the insurgents who were way out there. Good idea.

Hey, I know I'm late to the party, but for the H&K, try loading 6 rounds and shoot 5. In my limited experience shooting gas guns in PRS type matches, the follower in the magazine can affect how the last round is loaded, damaging the bullet when it is being fed. Also, with H&K having their proprietary mags, it could explain why only that gun experienced it. Food for thought, but I bet the gun is already back at H&K

Military Arms Channel had a good point about using a .308 as your do-all rifle. The ammo is just as common as 5.56. It offers more power, more terminal effectiveness and now with the increased popularity of suppressors, an option for indoors use. The shorter barrels on M4s got popular but the army and marine corps were kicking doors with 20" M16s in Iraq. So, do you need a DMR? Maybe not, but it's entirely possible to have a .308 gun that can do it all.

Bringing up what happened in Iraq did the opposite of what you wanted. That catastrophe is why they moved to shorter barrels. Also using a suppressor does not make 308 a good indoor option. A dmr is not a good indoor gun. It’s awful at it. The point is that one man in a squad can achieve greater range.
@DriveCarToBar3 ай бұрын
@@josh2711 The US Army seemingly disagrees with you. The M16A2/A4 was 39" long. The new XM7 is 36" with it's suppressor attached. And the suppressors are standard issue and are intended to be used all the time, because of the powerful round the new rifle uses. A DMR isn't a good indoor gun, but I didn't say it was. I just said something in .308. And the video just lays out that guy's opinion on the matter. If you like shorty boi 5.56 guns, keep using those. This is still America.

TRUST me, I understand quality, I understand spending more to get better, but with everything in life there is indeed a ceiling effect. Spent more than 2k on my first AR-15 and regret it. More than 2k on a long distance rifle, is insane to Normal folks. Who needs (1-2) quarter size groupings when you just need to hit a “body figured” target (hypothetical) at 500-1K yards? (These are real questions, i am inviting enthusiasts for open friendly discussion : ) I’d love to see grand thumb incorporate a specific rifle each video if he is testing a set of rifles/weapon that is the option for the “common man”. DMRs should be held, not dialed 99.999% of the time. This isn't long range bench rest, it's engaging more than 1(usually) targets at multiple unknown ranges and in varying conditions... to properly dial, you HAVE to return to zero after every single shot, then get a new firing solution for the next target, dial it, and send it. If you forget or otherwise fail to do so every single shot, you'll miss and/or get lost in your dial. If you only do holds, this is not an issue, and it's objectively faster, and oh btw, the reticle shows you your corrections directly....

For any gun owner in a ban state or country with magazine capacity limits A DMR makes the most sense for a rifle setup, and preferably it should chambered either be in a full on rifle caliber or if intermediate it should use the same pattern of magazines that the police and or Military use that are in higher capacity formats. If you're limited on rounds not missing is of the utmost priority, and not having to double tap is of even greater priority, and having a lot of standoff distance between you and your enemy where your shots don't have to be rushed helps.

@@anthonydietmeier6524Honestly I was about to say the same thing Touaregs don't get enough love. (Owning one has turned it into my favorite car) Though I was a little less heartbroken that that one is gas and not diesel. But VW really needs to bring the Touaregs back to the US, they're great

@Cman2ptO yeah my 2012 TDI has been great. Even better with a tune. Glad I'm not the only person that paused and zoomed on the badge to make sure it wasn't like a V10 TDI. I'm not sure the American market at large will ever be ready for an expensive VW suv. It's just a foreign concept to most. But they'll happily buy the same vehicle with an Audi or Porsche badge on it for big bucks.

I built an AR10 last year in .308. I used mostly Aero Precision and MagPull components. I absolutely love it. The only thing I really did wrong was put a scope that’s too small on it so that’s the next upgrade along with a trigger, although Aero’s trigger isn’t bad for a mil spec. I may never need it for anything but like Mike said at the end, the last thing you want is to be put in a situation where you need it and don’t have it available.

Finding the right brand was so hard. I found that every entry level long range shooter all uses arken. I went with riton because it was cheap and I liked their glass on other products a ton theres arken, riton, vortex and sig and primary arms and idk which has the best glass.

@@jason200912 I have a Vortex LVPO on my AR15 and it’s great. After I finished building the AR10 I was a bit tapped out for gun parts so just I threw another LVPO on it and quickly realized it wasn’t the right way to go, haha. I was thinking of trying another Vortex with higher magnification for my AR10.

Honestly, take whatever sponsors yall want. We as consumers NEED to do our own research. With KZbin being the way it is you guys need the money to stay afloat. Like yall say all the time, we can listen to your advice but at the end of the day we have to make our own decisions on the products we buy and the gear we run

I used to be a hunting guide, mainly for wild pigs and I can vouch for 6.5’s efficacy. The wound cavity and damage from energy is genuinely comparable to an average load 300 winmag or 7mm rem mag. It blew my mind the first several times I saw it.

Just got a PSA M110 Sabre last week and I'm zero'n it today. Off topic I just heard about MPVO's. Maybe a video on this on a DMR? Some of us peasants just got into LVPO's and now these are popping up.

The only thing new about them is that they're trending. I like a few: Athlon Helos 2-12x42 Athlon Ares 2.5-15x50 Primary Arms GLx 3-18x44 There's plenty more similar, dozens of options etc. Those are just the ones I find most interesting for features to price point i.e. value

A Mossberg MVP in 308 takes AR-10 mags. I've suggested that a MVP in 5.56 with a 4x scope is a good option for a SHTF loaner rifle.

I shoot both .308 (M1A EB/MR 22" and a bolt gun 26") and 6.5 (DD5 20"). I gravitate toward this philosophy of the DMR versus PRS due its real-world functionality. I also gravitate towards the .308 for ubiquity of the ammunition. I have toyed with the idea of going heavier profile barrel and shortening to 18" on the EBR for more ease of use with suppression, but I do like the almost hybrid capability of pushing out to a real SHTF 1000 yard mark with a heavier Sierra match/game round and the longer barrel.

My DMR is an AR-10 with a 20 inch heavy barrel. Got a poverty scope on it because I just can't justify Gucci Glass to myself. In my neck of the woods though, I'd be lucky to have a clear shot past 250 yards considering all the trees and hills. It's all gonna be up close and personal here, or shoot and scoot.
