I think you summed up my thoughts exactly. I had the 5d4 and I was contemplating an upgrade between a r3 and a 1dx3. I had the r3 for a coupe of weeks and I did not like the experience much. Animal Eye af is great but it’s also not bulletproof. I ended up buying a used 1dx3 and within a day I knew I had made the right decision for me. The af is pretty amazing and I get a pretty high keeper rate. Also the OVF 🙏🏽! I’m in front of screens all day (MacBook, iPhone, iPad, tv etc.) I didn’t want another screen (EVF) in between myself and wildlife/nature. DSLR users are shrinking rapidly but I know that the 1dx3 will always be an amazing camera for wildlife.
@RichardBirchett3 ай бұрын
Thanks very much for checking out my video and I'm glad you agree! There are some bargains to be had out there and the OVF is far better on the eye than the EVF, plus the delay is annoying. When I use my DX's as binoculars they serve a much needed eye, with the R3 the battery gets drained and it keeps going into standby! The DSLR will always have a place in my camera bag. Thanks again Rich 😀
@anand-iyer3 ай бұрын
@@RichardBirchett thanks for the reply. great point about using the 1dx3 OVF as binoculars. I do that myself as well. If I choose to observe the wildlife through the ovf to take in the moment, I’d much rather see them in real life through my eyes vs a video feed. That’s not to say I’m against mirrorless. They all have their place for me. For example I like using evf/ lcd screen when I’m doing landscape photography.

Great video Richard, nice to see someone make a few honest criticisms of mirrorless systems. I recently got an R6 mark 2 (coming from a 6D mark 2), and as you say I think the biggest benefit is the silent shutter, which is an absolute god send. I spend a lot of time photographing barn owls, which are very sensitive to noises, and it's made a massive difference. Previously, if I wanted to take a shot of an owl on a perch say, I would have to wait for it to get comfortable before taking a shot, and I would have to have pauses between my shots to avoid scaring it. Now, I can take as many shots as I like. This has been especially useful when it's still very dark - with my camera on a tripod and using a remote shutter I can hold down the shutter continuously (with the autofocus focusing on the face automatically) and manage to get a few sharp shots at shutter speeds of up to 0.6s! I've also managed to get a few wide angle remote shutter release shots, which would have been impossible with a loud mechanical shutter. The EVF is useful for showing the exact exposure, and for providing a brighter view when shooting in dark conditions, but I agree that an OVF feels more like you're actually there watching the birds. I also have a feeling the OVF may be better suited to tracking very fast subjects like peregrines, which I spend a large amount of time photographing in the spring. I also worry slightly about the effects on eye health of using an EVF, focusing on a screen very close up. Finally, the battery drain is noticeable, and if I'm stood around all day photographing peregrines I will have to change batteries multiple times. This has led me to consider getting a 1Dx mark 2 for photographing peregrines (and any other non-skittish subjects). I'll admit it's partly because I want the experience of a pro 1D body, and I like the idea of a really robust camera body (my r6mk2 feels a bit more fragile than my 6Dmk2). Another big factor that I actually don't see mentioned that often is that the mirrorless camera frame rate is actually limited on older EF lenses. I can only get up to around 15fps electronic and 6fps mechanical using my R6mk2 on my EF 500f4 mark 1 - I think simply because the new camera lacks the power to drive the older motors on the lens. I'd rather use mechanical shutter for the peregrines as the fast movement increases the chance of rolling shutter, especially on the vertical lines in the buildings in the background, which will be quite obvious. With a 1Dxmk2 I'll be able to get 14fps mechanical, and the larger battery should also deliver faster focusing. The move to mirrorless seems to really be driving down the prices of used DSLRs which is great - crazy to think you can get a camera which was top of the range as recently as 5 years ago, for around £1k used in reasonable condition.

Thanks very much for watching Jamie and for your response to it. There are so many plus and minus points to both systems and I am in full agreement with what you've said I love to have both options for my type of photography and the 1DX 2 or 3 really does suit me very well, but the silent shutter and for IBIS and video it really is a massive plus for what I do. EVF is something that lets it down for me but to get the right exposure and to see what you get out of an image is a real bonus. Although I do love to have a good old trusty DSLR working away for BIF's. Battery life is always a massive consideration and now I'm in Canada in temperatures down to below -20 the drain becomes every more apparent which is a problem, the DX series just keep on going even in live view. Interesting point about the older EF lens and the FPS drop off, not found that an issue to be honest, I'll look into that further. Thanks again for watching and I wish you a Happy New Year. Cheers Rich 👍

I bought my Canon R6 for all the “pro” reasons you state: EVF, silent shutter etc and sold my 5D IV. I love mirrorless and still use my EF lenses with an adapter. However, I still have my old 80d which is probably not worth much in money terms but still sees the light of day occasionally as a back-up or when I could really do with the crop factor. The fact that it uses the same batteries as the R6 also helps. It is like stepping back in time and seems a bit primitive nowadays but as they always say “the best camera in the world is the one you have with you”. All the best mate 👍🏻

Hi Richard, welcome back and great timing for me as I am considering an R3. I agree 100% with what you said about the 1DXiii, it’s fantastic and I love it too. I use a loope for the live view and that is brilliant, I use for badgers, deer, etc. I also have the R7 and I haven’t been that happy with the image quality and get the same issues with the AF as others have on high speed with the electronic shutter with it moving off the subject. I will always keep and use the 1DXiii but feel it’s time to add an R3 for a few extra functions, the AF and silent mode. All the best, Rich.

Really relevant topic, think this is particularly on the mind for alot of wildlife photographers. I broke into the mirrorless market with the R10 ended up creeping back to my 1DX. Honestly more about finances for me but interesting how mirroless created problems I never had before (battery life, rolling shutter, EVF lag/blackout). 2 options either throw lots of money at it or or move back to DSLR, the later was the option for me. Interesting to hear your thoughts and hope life in Canada is going well. I think the crucial take is shooting what you know works best for you, that you can get the most out of, and if that's DSLR that's all good as for taking great images they are more than capable. Both system types have plusses and minuses though I think it's fair to say the balance has shifted to mirrorless. At the end of the day it's what the person who operates all that kit can do which is the defining factor and without those skills, that vision and creativity you'll never take exceptional images whatever camera (and lens ) you use.

Dipped my toe into the Nikon mirrorless world for my wildlife photography and tried out a z 6 for a couple of months, well aware of the autofocus shortcomings but interested to try for myself because of the video specs and weight. Didn’t get on with the ergonomics, evf, autofocus system or battery life despite loving it for macro, landscape and portraits. Didn’t want to throw more money at the problem and get a z9. Soon switched back when I realised that thanks to plummeting dslr prices, I could get a D5 for the trade in value of my z6 and ftz! It’s given me a whole new appreciation for the autofocus system and ergonomics of the top of the line Nikon dslrs, even if I am back to manual focus stacking for macro stuff.

Echo almost everything you said in terms of the pros & cons of both systems. Like you, I’m really not a fan of the mirrorless EVF, it’s like a projected view of what’s going on in front of the sensor; whereas with the DSLR what you see is what you get. I also don’t like the blackout between frames in a burst of images, very distracting for me. I’ve tried the R5, & it’s not for me. I’m sticking with my 5Div for now, but I recently tried out the R6ii & loved it. This has the option of an EVF with an OVF simulator; & though it’s still an EVF it was very true to life. I think like you say DSLR still has a lot to offer; & if I do go for an R6ii I will keep the DSLR & use both. Interesting & informative vlog Richard, thanks for sharing. Keep on keeping on! I started bird photography with a Canon 800D and a Tamron 150 to 600. I moved on to a R6 and a RF 600 F11. For me, at least,it was a game changer , much better auto focus and many, many more keepers. I went to get an R5 and R7 too. But with successive firmware updates, the auto focus struggles with the Tamron now so got an EF 100 - 400 mk 2 with teleconverters. I wouldn’t go back to a DSLR but the R5 ,in particular, requires alot of computer space and shooting in raw is a non starter for my aging computer. In the end though, it’s what suits you isn’t it?
@RichardBirchett Жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, really like how you've approached it. The ML system works well for so many people and if that helps and works you've got to stick with it. The keeper rate certainly increases massively with ML over DSLR, still fine tuning your DSLR's AF for me usually achieves great results with very few OOF shots. Computer space is always an issue and processing 6k-8K video is emotional even on my powerful iMac's, still for me my setup works really well and produces images I am happy with. Thanks again Rich

Great stuff here! I've been happily in the DSLR camp since I bought my Canon 300D over 20 years ago, and I still get good results with it. Since then I've added a 20D, 7D (upgraded to a 7D Mk II), and finally a 1DX Mk III to my arsenal, along with some decent-quality Canon glass. Now, I do plan to add an R6 Mk II to my gear some time in the new year, but that's only because I can afford it; I have no illusions that one mirrorless camera will suddenly make me a great photographer. My DSLRs are all in great shape, and will probably last longer than I will! Obsolescence is relative; as long as any piece of hardware or software does what you need it to do, that's the only thing that matters.
@RichardBirchett Жыл бұрын
Well said and I totally agree with you there, the 20D was my first DSLR and I loved it, at 8.2 MP it produced some great images! It's never always about the gear and is down to the user, however some of the Pro models are great when you are out in the elements in rain, ,wind, snow, sand etc. To protect you gear in the harshest of conditions really does come in to it's own. Yeah the R6-2 looks like a great camera and a welcome edition to the bag, question is will you use the R6-2 more and more! Proabbly but the DSLR is still a beast and takes great images! And better battery life... Thanks for watching. Richard 👍

Interesting video Richard. I'm still shooting with a 5DMKIII. I would love to go mirrorless if money was no object and this is just my perspective... With a full time job my time for photography is limited, so if the tool I use can increase my chances of a shot then I personally don't see this as making it too easy, though I appreciate your opinion on making it a challenge. I'd also happily go for 45MP R5 because, as you are probably aware you can never have enough focal length and the cropping power I think would be a useful feature. Coming back to the time element, I'd love to set up hides etc but I don't have the time or locations to invest so often my wildlife photography is on the fly, meaning often my subject is further away. Oh, and 1 MASSIVE selling point is the articulated screen! It's a real shame Canon haven't adopted this in any of the high end SLR's. As I get older and do macro work, or even landscape work low down, it's not easy getting up!

Then three months later the R3 was announced and I just sank inside learning that it was even $1G cheaper and of course had the animal eye focus!! So I bought the R3 then sold the 1DX3 for a bit of a loss. No regrets now though, love the R3. I still use a 5DSR for my landscape camera. WELCOME TO CANADA! Hi Monte, thanks very much for watching and for your experience with the DX3, I’m still holding out for the final animal eye AF firmware upgrade, same chip! But will they??? Probably not, lol…. It’s gutting when that happens but great you are all sorted now. I love the 5DSR even though it struggles at high ISO, still with all those pixels the image cleans up well! It’s certainly on the big list to come across and spend some time there, it sounds amazing! Wish I was closer…. Thanks again Rich👍

I agree with most of your opinions. However, a also differ on a few things too. For one, Canon DSLRs always seem to struggle with birds flying straight at the camera. ML does much better. Also, dslrs also needed to be AF adjusted to ensure the sharpest photos, and if you have a lot of lens and/or shoot with TC, it is a pain to do all of that, and you’d need to do it over in time after use. Gone with ML. Frankly, the image i see through a viewfinder is not so great because it is small, so I can get by just fine with what I see on ML. Any delay that is present in the VF on ML just is not an issue for me. Also, putting thr TC on makes way less difference than on dslrs. And ML focuses better with higher f-stops that dslr ever did. Video through the VF enables handheld video. Can’t do that on a dslr. So, while IQ isn’t any better, there are a host of other improvements that come with ML that are worth having and make photography better and more efficient, which ought to count for someone who does it all the time. I still recommend dslrs to those who are doing certain types of work and who need to get great IQ without spending a fortune. And EF lenses are more than good enough for most applications, so the supposed advantages of RF lenses are hard to prove out, if you ask me.

Thanks Roger, some great points there and thanks for taking the time to share them with us. I've found the same issue with BIF towards the camera, and AF adjusting is a right pain as is all the calibration stuff! At least with mirrorless this is less so! I do like the ability to video through the viewfinder especially hand holding a small zoom or Tele. Both have plus and minuses, and the ML has much more refinement and allows the user to get a high rate of keepers over the DSLR. Still I love the old school feel on the DX series. I am sure in time they will fade away but as long as I can get batteries I will still use the DSLR alongside the ML versions. Thanks again Rich 👍

I don’t understand if DSLRs are on the way out why Canon is making a new 1DX Mark3 which I drool over when I see it…. And then I start wretching when I see the price of $6,500.00.

Hi there and thanks for watching. The Canon 1DX Mk III was released in January 2020 and is still in the Canon lineup, it's the last Pro DSLR ever to be made and at some point will be discontinued, I'd imagine there will be a few deals to be had there. Thanks Rich👍

I find there is a bit of an attitude to DSLR users in hides now, I use a Nikon D4 and when I fire off a burst in a hide some people give me a disapproving look. It seems a bit of snobbery is creeping into photography . also they seem to think more megapixels is king.
@RichardBirchett Жыл бұрын
I didn't know that has creeped in, but I'm guessing in a quite hide for sensitive subjects people may find it an issue. Saying that we did use the noisier shutter for years without any real issues. Bird watchers sometimes get upset but we have to appreciate all users and not get annoyed by things like this. Great point and thanks for mentioning it. Yeah, the Pixel Race will always be there, still I'm happy with what I've got. Cheers Rich 👍

Welcome to Canada! Which province did you settle in? I kind of laughed when you said the mirrorless af feels too easy. Thats how i felt when i first tried dpaf ii. Its absolutely amazing but after a while i kind of felt like i was missing a big part of the shooting so i stuck with the dx bodies.

Hi Richard thanks for this video, interesting discussion. I sold my 1DX2 to buy the R5 but still wish I could have justified holding on to it, loved that camera. The R5 is amazing though and love the 45 mpx and IBIS. EVF on the R5 is higher resolution than the R6 and R3 and is great but I know exactly what you mean about looking through an optical VF. Can’t beat it 😊. Glad your all settled now in Canada 🍁 All the Best. Doug

Thanks Doug, really interesting to hear about the EVF on the R5 over the R3, that I didn't realise! They are fantastic cameras and really are amazing for sensitive wildlife but the OVF on the DSLR I do still love, and you can't beat what you've used for so long! Maybe they will improve in the R1 and R5 MkII. But I am happy with both setups, I might get an R5 at some point if one comes my way! I obviously need another Camera, lol... Thanks again Rich 👍

I'm with you on this - DSLR isn't dead yet. I use a 5DIV as my main body but I also use an R7, which I bought to learn the new mirrorless system while I wait for Canon to put out a stacked sensor with a bit more resolution than the R3 because I print a lot of images of small birds and need to crop often. Anyway, the mirrorless system has a lot of advantages - for me, I like having a live histogram and exposure in my viewfinder, I like shooting silent (or almost silent) and I like having faster burst speeds. The AF on mirrorless is a revolution with subject tracking and eye detect, but it's not perfect so I have a back button programmed for the "old way". Overall, mirrorless has clear advantages and it is the future. That said, I still love using my 5DIV - it's a much more enjoyable experience because I feel more involved in the process. Sure, I sometimes miss a couple of shots that I might have nailed with a mirrorless camera and that can be annoying. But even when I switch to a mirrorless main body, I'll keep my 5DIV. If nothing else, it'll remind me how we used to work 😂

Thanks for the comment Mike, I'm with you there and I understand about the lack of MP for tight crops on small birds.To be fair I've cropped in on very small birds and have managed to walk away with some nice clean images! Sure if the R3 had 32-35 MP would be a nice to have but I am happy what I get, the R7 is okay and produce nice images in good light and you can crop a bit and get better image sin some cases, but if you up the ISO or work in low light with the R7 you start asking for trouble. Yep, I'll keep the DSLR's until I really have to upgrade again, which I hope won't be for some time yet! You do miss some but I like a challenge, lol.. Cheers Rich 👍

Hit the nail on the head. When animal eye detection started taking off, the purist in me thought where's the fun in letting the camera do most of the work. It used to be more rewarding when you could just manage 1 or 2 in focus shots in vital moments. I find wildlifephotography has become too oversaturated, just about everybody has amazingly capable gear and those rare shots are not so rare anymore. Everyone is looking at the next technology advance, while the art is suffering
@RichardBirchett8 ай бұрын
Thanks very much for watching Jake, I'm glad there are a few out there that agree, lol... It's much more fun the old way, although as you know the eye AF is that good it gives remarkable results even at great distance. Still for me having both systems works really well and I love the shutter sound even though the Wildlife wouldn't agree! Thanks again Rich :-)

DSLR =photographer, top end mirrorless=camera operator? I use 5ds for wildlife and it's about the skill that gives the most enjoyment for me I agree about the shutter noise but that just adds to the challenge not only that her indoors may go mad if I spend another lump of money on camera even more equipment keep up the good content mate

Your comment on the IQ difference between mirrorless and DSLR struck a chord for me. When I finally gave up on Canon ever releasing a R7, I bought the R6 as my upgrade on the original 7D. I wasn’t impressed at first, I expected a huge leap in everything, especially IQ coming from an old tech 12 year old crop to FF. The AF was very good but a bit complicated for me, I didn’t have the time to go out for hours at a time to learn it ( still don’t ). It’s a very good camera, but not the leap I was expecting……………. Hope you’ve settled in out there.
@RichardBirchett Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for your points and all really valid. Yeah I think we all expect the image quality to make a huge leap forward but I don't think that's going to be something that jumps out at us, but the low light and high ISO would obviously be a distinct advantages over the older tech. They are all good cameras and at the end of the day it's the user that makes a good image. All settled thanks, continually exploring to find new species and just enjoying the change from the UK, although I do miss home a bit. Cheers Rich 👍

I shoot with a 1DXii and a Lumix G9. I love both these cameras for different uses - but I have to say I still *love* the mirror view through the 1DXii. No EVF comes close to the pleasure of that view.

Cannot afford to swtch . And am happy with what i use . When Canon shut down 3rd party lenses for it's RF . And i read on the RF group that an update made 3rd party lenses inoperable when used with the Adapter . And some if not most of the lenses is double the price of the R7,8 from what i've seen . And the R6mrk 2 Kit is bordering 4 grand , few short of R5 price .. And the R7 AF fails in low contrast if using a HSR .That was admitted by Canon when Duade Paton sent his in . Watch his Video

People comparing 1DX to low end mirrorless makes no sense. I went 7Dii to A1. There are no regrets. I also have R7 which is in many ways better than 7Dii but the sensor readout speed is too slow which impacts performance and makes RAW burst unuseable for small birds. For birds in flight rolling shutter ruins the backgrounds. Rolling shutter also distorts wings. Basically R7 is a joke.
@RichardBirchett Жыл бұрын
Hi David, Yeah I can see that's a bit of a unrealistic comparison as they are quite far apart in terms of performance and spec. Lots of people have issues with the R7 but I find it pretty good in most situations, but in low light at high ISO it's not the best. I found it shooting kingfishers to be pretty good, not like the R3 but useable. Did you disable AUTO level which dramatically reduces rolling shutter for fast moving subjects? Thanks Richard
