Have owned 2 mk2's in the past, one of each engine variant and the 1.8 is the better option. Best 2 seater sports car in category without doubt, absolutely loved driving them, would definitely buy again. They are just so planted and albeit only about 8.5 seconds 0 to 60 (1.8) they still feel so quick. Large active owners club and classic insurance type policies available. There is a reason why they are the best selling 2 seater sports car and still in production today! Another great video!

Great video...as always! I had a 2000 Mk2 model for about 5 years. I drove it the length and breadth of Ireland. An amazing little car, always felt you were doing 70mph+ even when you were only doing 35/40! Drove with the top down as often as possible, even on cold cloudy days(great heater!). I miss my MX5, thank you from the trip down memory lane. Keep up the great work......

i sold mine last year. what a great car it was! in country where i live it's actually an understatement - a new classic. as they gotten old problems appear: soft top will need replacement, rubber seals in folding mechanism deteriorate, interior will show age, rust (sills!) and in my example emissions. but everything can be fixed, support regarding parts is great. the positive thing about driving it (besides the BEST gear shifts): you always feel like you are going faster than you actually are. It is also great car for learning how to drive, the RWD will teach you to respect the speed when going into corners or slippery surface. (yes, i span few times). I recommend it, but don't buy the cheapest, trashiest example (thou it will probably run and drive nice) unless you see it as a project. check the rust, thoroughly: sills, wheel arches, front mud guards (inspect car in good lighting conditions). 2.5 is apparently much better than straight MK 2. oh and faulty camshaft position sensor - fix is easy once you have right diagnosis (car won't start when hot). if soft top was recently replaced that is huge advantage (you can buy completely new soft top but installing is pain in the a$$), if car comes with hardtop - even better (super useful in winter time and rainy season).

I needed to do a bit of mtce. on my wife's MX5 and did a search on line and of course my feed is now full of all things MX5 related. Not much to say about the issues everybody raises about them, just that I struggle to imagine a car with a better £££s:fun ratio. The first time you go over a mountain pass and see a clear road ahead, priceless yet you can pick a reasonable one up for a couple of grand. Ridiculous amount of fun.

in 2014 my younger daughter bought a 2011 MX-5 with the 2 litre engine and the retracting hard to as a daily driver and she is still using it. The only significant failure was the alternator bearings. It is a bog-reliable bit of square-nut engineering. It's "interesting" in snow and ice! I hope the purchase was inspired by the Caterham she grew up with and, although it is twice the weight of the Cat and not so nimble even I would prefer it for winter driving. As for the British sports cars breaking down I have had no problems with the Cat but do have a head-gasket set in stock in case I need it 8-)=

I bought my 2011 Kendo roadster coupe in February 2015, still have it and I haven't had any kind of problem other than brake components. Oh, and I do need to rustproof it now as the underside is corroding. It's quite analogue now, there are so many features new cars have now which it lacks, but it is these which are causing reliability headaches in reliability surveys!

100% agree with you. I had from new a 97 MK1 frogeye MX5. One of the best cars I have ever driven - and I'm as far as you can get from a hairdresser or cabin crew! Just had to watch the skittish back end when exiting a wet roundabout. Also no good as a first car when going to the airport with cases for a week away or collecting DIY stuff from B&Q. My brother has a limited edition MK1 gathering moss on his drive. Can't think for the life of me what edition it is but it's a BRG version. Surprised to hear of corrosion issues on these.

If you have a 1496 EGR valve motor fault, on an nb, that a new EGR valve won't fix and extinguish the check engine light on a little used mx5, then get the ECU checked. Mine did this and when the EGR valve sticks, the extra current passed straight through to the ECU and mine has blown an electronic chip in the ECU. Waiting for it to be replaced and the ECU replaced back into the car, to get it back on the road again. The ECU is positioned under the carpet, in the passenger foot well as it rises up towards the bulk head.

Top review. I was thinking about one of these Matt before I dismissed it for a Porsche Boxster 3.2 S. It was to quick to have road way fun in. Thats why I got bored with it quickly. Then as I said in a past review of yours, started looking at the SLK's (as I said to you the other day). With the Rover 75 this looks like the ideal choice for a bit of weekend fun. I took it to the track at Road Atlanta right after I bought it (145 mph on the long straight). But after looking at tire and brake costs, I'm seeing why so many people track Miatas. But I what if I want a cheaper car that's unique, besides the Mazda? Would a 380zx be good? BTW, I Love me XKR and may keep it in addition.

The Mk3 is by far the better car (mine has the electric hard top which is superb) in that it has the same good things as the Mk2 (I think it actually handles better - mine has the Mazda Eibach lowered springs) but is far more refined. I'm nearly 72 and a big lad so getting in and out isn't as easy at it was, but it's worth it for the driving experience! Mk2 Mx-5s rust FAR FAR more than the Mk1s. You have to be very much aware of the front chassis legs on a mk2 as they are double skinned and rust through on otherwise pristine looking cars. The mk1s were much more solid by comparison, only their age counts against them. (sorry for caps ;) )

Glad someone said that before me 2.5 models rust badly as well i've had two mk2's both suffered from rust worm sills arches etc
@jmpcrx

Actually its the mk2.5's that have double skinned chassis rails, thats why you should always buy the mk2. The mk2 was the best out of all of them for a number of reasons. Thats why i have the mk2 😎😎😎

I had a Mk3 and absolutely loved it, my favourite car to date. I could be tempted to buy another one. Anyone taking the piss out of an MX-5 hasn’t driven one.

Mathew Davies I’ve driven one only for a laugh though and they are a gay car just like the Audi TT. How any man could get excited with a Mx - 5 is beyond me. They are that gay even women don’t buy them

Thanks for this video. As I get closer to retirement (although a few years to go yet) my thoughts have been about getting a small sports car where on a summers day I can just drop the roof and head off over the border into Wales. The MX5 was my 1st thought, now it's my only thought. Roll on retirement :-)

As someone in their mid-60s and an NC owner, I can tell you getting in is really easy.... it's the getting out that takes effort! The major problem with it is the lack of good weather in the UK. In 2019 I did a massive 400 miles in it over the course of the year, weather was pants and don't talk to me about 2020!

Made me laugh out loud! Great review of a great little car. It's no accident that MX5s are often used at tracks to teach the basics of car control: accessible, balanced and signposts what's going on for the driver. 👍

My buddy had an old MX5 beater car, that he used as a daily driver, for years. Tough little car, that despite its age and condition, was surprisingly still tight and responsive.

Hi I am the idiot that drops you a line now and then the one you wish would go away ??My daughter who lives in Manchester needed a new car so I put her your way but like all kids totaly ignored me Any way I found a Mazda MX5 2.5 in what can only be described as time warp condition 40K on the clock and not a bit of rust anywhere now having seen a few vids yours inclusive I am wondering if I should let her have it "to wreck" ?? Or just put it away ?? I viewd over 15 cars yes 15 cars all at different ages this one was just out of this world So any advice would be much appreciated before I let her get her little grubby hands on it ????????????? Great vid as always creep creep !!

I’ve never liked them and I’ve never disliked the Mazda it’s just one of them cars that you don’t take a second look at but you know they’re my old smart repair man he’s got one and him and his two mates did a gumball rally from London to south of Spain. On 1 Audi TT v6 1 audi 1.8 turbo and the Mazda both Audi’s broke down and the Mazda made it there and back with no fault 😂😂

Great cars but.... these second generation cars rust like nothing else on earth underneath - even if they look tidy on top. Check the sills and chassis rails underneath with great care. If you do find a good one - rust proof and underseal it to the max. 👍

I have a lovely 20th Anniversary MK 3 which has done a genuine 25,000 miles from new, fantastic car, cheap insurance and road tax, yes I only bring it out on nice sunny days, one thing I love is you can take the hood up and down in ten seconds, I have previously had two Morgans and you have to faff about for five minutes doing this. Choose wisely, take your time and you could probably run it for five years and get most of your money back when you sell. Great channel btw, really enjoyed the Bentley feature.

Couldn't agree more, the MK2 Mx5 is my favourite little sport car, no other car can rival it in terms of cheap and reliable motoring fun. And wow £325 a year tax is ridiculous, I tax a facelift 04 plate W220 320cdi and another facelift E53 55 plate X5 3.0D sport for the same amount of money! My new favourite car reviewer, Matt Watson you should start worrying lol.
