I have a 2010 XC90 which I purchased because Iv always had BMW’s and I got fed up of the chime of doom. I replaced the sat nav unit for a interested 10 inch touch screen with car play etc and Bluetooth streaming, j then added some 20inch wheels from a 2018 car. It now feels and looks a bit more modern and although it’s drive doesn’t compare to the Bmw or Audi it’s the only car Iv ever had that in 12 months has never let me down, has been cheap to maintain and I have never struggled to carry a load. Oh, and the Satnav can be controlled via a series of buttons on the steering wheel behind the audio controls. Once you learn the functions and how to feel your way around the hidden controls, it's okay to use. The remote control is for the passenger to navigate for you and is useful in that respect. I think Volvo knew what they were doing with that idea.

Having gone from an X5 M-Sport to a late 2011 XC90 - I take some of the points regarding its handling, but not in relation to reliability. Compared to the X5, these things are comparably bulletproof. No issues with driving position. Mine is an R-Design, whether it's the alloys or suspension that help, I don't know - but it isn't too bad in the corners albeit not as proficient as an X5 in the bends. It's no sports car for sure, but will hussle when you need it to. I thought I'd hate it as a motorcyclist - it's the polar opposite of a Fireblade! But, for practicality, reliability, comfort and value for money - they are superb. I love it! Cruising along the motorway, or towing a caravan or horse box, it's perfect. Sat Nav and parking brake are the worst features. Both work, but are a bit rubbish tbh!

We love ours. Just a really likeable, comfortable, versatile and practical family hack with zero sporting pretension whatsoever. If you hunt down a good one, and be prepared to keep on top of the usual old car stuff, they do get under your skin. They're logically designed and all the usual maintenance stuff is accessible and logically laid out. There's also brilliant community for technical tips and help, and a good network of indie specialists if you need to call in the pros. In my experience they are pretty fundamentally reliable though if looked after, and there are loads still in daily use with 250+k on the clock. Worth mentioning that the timing belt is probably one of the easiest and quickest out there to do, with minimal dismantling needed, and plenty of room. Even if you go for genuine Volvo parts, a belt and water pump kit is only about £200, and you can do the job yourself in a couple of hours. The D5 is also far more reliable generally than any half modern German diesel with their chocolate timing chains and turbos. I absolutely agree that an XC90 is not the last word in driver entertainment, but I've never bought into the whole X5 thing either. All these cars are massively compromised, and none have much driver appeal in the scheme of things. The X5 does a better job of disguising its height and weight than most, but you still wouldn't choose one to throw down a good bit of road, or if driver appeal was a major consideration. The XC90 works so well IMO because Volvo hasn't bothered trying to make it a sports car. It's unapologetically built for comfort and practicality. The antiquated sat-nav that heaves itself out of the dash only to point mostly at the floor is pretty tragic! :)

@aidancollingwood73084 жыл бұрын
You're right about the engine being a bit underpowered for the XC90. The turbo lag on take-off from a stop is dreadful on my 2006 year 185hp D5. It can really catch you out when judging the distance between you and an approaching car, and the resulting torque steer if you are accelerating hard from zero and turning in the process can be ferocious. We've owned ours since about 2012 and we're sort of used to it but those driving characteristics can still surprise you. The engine does sound too noisy and agricultural for what was a premium product. It does wallow around bends, too. But as a long distance cruiser for driving all over Europe with two kids and two large dogs and a 6 berth tent, it'll be hard to beat. Practicality is extremely good and fuel economy is acceptable - the consumption figures you gave are about right. Good video as usual.

I off-road just enough, but nothing tough and I motorway drive long hours. I describe it as point and shoot with cruise control set at 95mph. Gets you comfortable there and refreshed. I like the seats (big guy). Expensive to maintain, but its over 200k miles. I love (flash) camping with it. I put on the roof box and bikes on the back. It cruises nicely on the motorway but doesn't like corners as you say. However it has saved me on ice and snow... It handles so well in these conditions that you sometimes forget. I love it for my practical needs only. Would consider a Disco 4 or Touareg as alternatives, but they are even bigger fuel guzzlers.

Thank you for this review. Was considering one of these. Here in the US we have the Petrol V8 versions. Ive never driven one tho. I got rid of my L320 RRS and bought an 08 Ford Expedition EL which is about twice the length of this Volvo! Drives like a truck, because, well, its basicy an F-150 long bed with a different body on it. All F-150 parts fit the Expeditions. My wife can never park it and hates the fact that i got rid of the L320 lol. Not refined, heavy, etc. But due to having a special needs boy that requires lots of pumps and luggage, i jumped the gun and bought the Expedition EL “Limited”. Dont get me wrong, I love it!...but its a TRUCK! Tows 9,000lbs! Captains chairs, AC seats, real wood steering wheel, powerfolding 3rd row, power tailgate, power running boards, touch screen with st/nav, rear DVD entertainment, High End sound system with subwoofer, etc. So this Volvo has been on my radar.. so im considering jumping ship back to a European SUV. An LR3/4 would be great but slightly out of the price range for me here in the US. MY L320 was always costly to maintain. But i loved how it wallowed and floated down the road! That driving position too was unlike any other! Just a suggestion,...you should really do a video on the Expedition EL/Chevy Suburban...not sure if they have them across the pond tho. Great vid tho! Much appreciated!

Great video. I was a wee bit disappointed that you missed out a group of folks for whom the XC90 is an extremely good option. We tow a caravan which is 1500kg fully laden. We have a 60 plate SE with the 183 power unit. It pulls really well, but if your on A roads and keeping to the 50mph speed limit it does need a lower gear. Admittedly, my wife and I tend to drive using the semiautomatic mode because it gives far better control, especially when cornering. So I agree with you that the 200 ps power unit would be better, but we love our XC90. We find it a pleasure to drive, even with its downsides. But let’s face it, what car doesn’t have downsides. It’s what you like in the end. I’ve only just found your videos and will be subscribing. Good, honest approach. Thanks again 👍

Thanks for the review. I haven’t read all of the comments so I’ll apologise in advance if I’m being repetitive. It’s my understanding that the sat nav remote is for your passengers (if you have any) to use rather than the driver fumbling around with it. You should find that all the sat nav buttons are discretely placed behind the steering wheel. They’re not in view so are easily overlooked. That said, it isn’t a rewarding system to use and the cost of the latest update ‘discs’ is prohibitive. Later Volvos download these from t’interweb so are much more user friendly. I was once told that XC90 owners whinge about some of the things you’ve picked up on but often go on to buy another XC90, I did. They just work for certain people at certain points in their lives. My caravan is gone and so are my XC90s. Keep the video reviews coming, they’re brill.

Just watched the video. Good review. I picked up a 2006 Executive in Sep 2018. 110K on the clock and I ran it until Dec 2019 when I sold it and bought a new shape B5 Momentum. A purchase that was a direct result of that first Volvo experience. I can honestly say I loved every mile I drove that 2006 car. It was probably the most well screwed together car I've ever had including BMW, Jaguar and Landrover. They are built like tanks and feel bombproof. The car I had was immaculate and had been well maintained by a Volvo main dealer. It came with a FSH that was as thick as two stacked house bricks and was just a great car experience. Space, comfort and a feeling of security. Not as thirsty as you may think but, as ever, it depends how heavy your right foot is.... Had to smile at the mention of the seats. First time I went through a couple of country road twists and turns I found myself sliding as Physics took over but they are big comfortable. Didn't recognise the arm rest issue - perhaps I'm bigger and wider than you :-) Not sure I agree with the engine and acceleration. I didn't tend to floor mine but on occasion I had to it it shifted. No worries on that score and that was without knocking it into the manual gear option. Pulled a horse box without fuss and as for the boot, space was never going to be an issue. Any problems? Couple of cosmetic ones: the side panels on the front seats can crack over time. Both replaced for around £40 by SLR Motors (see below) and one oil weep which was traced back to the bottom seal being crimped when the timing belt had been changed by the Volvo main dealer. Easy and relatively quick / inexpensive to resolve. That aside I put 4 new tyres on it. Finally a big shout out to SLR Motors in Moore, Warrington who sold me the car and then maintained it. Absolutely first class experience car buying and servicing. Seb the owner is an absolute font of all Volvo knowledge and is a truer gentleman to deal with.

I agree test drove one and on the windy Cornish Roads, I felt lucky to arrive alive.it was all over the place, you have to steer twice, once for the corner and again when it wallows over and it seems to time the wallowing right when you want to turn out.

After buying a '56' 2007 xc90 D5 186bhp with 140k I've had a a little experience in a short time. I've done 6k miles in 3 weeks. I've had a few soot filter full issues. Just generic dpf regens. Foot down the intake is loud. Sounds good though. Mpg I have on average over 3 months and 6000 miles is around 28mpg. Oil usage is around 3 litres for 6000 miles for me. Dpf clogs and regens every 600 miles ish unless use a fuel additive. The additive extends the regens to around 1100 miles. Handling is way better than a x5 in corners at speed. There's no air suspension float feeling on corner and no air suspension issues the X5 can bring. If you have the stones it handles well for a big car. The interior creaks a bit. I don't have a sat nav in mine but the arm rest is smaller than it should be. I've wiped the floor with kids in mapped cars in second gear from a stand still. Surprising how quick this big car is. You also get people slowing down thinking you are police. With 7 seats up the boot is decent. The panel pops up for grocerys. I've had a half a week shop, a shovel and a fork secured without issue or extra tie downs. So far id recommend it. The more you know about mechanics the better with them.

Sinc eposting this I've had the dreaded "tug boat" sound then head failure. A port/hole for a tappet cracked. Now it needs a head. Used the right oil butneeds thicker oil when older. Be wary. Still looking for right head months later. Be careful.

These are great cars, I’ve got a 2.5T petrol version which I’ve now had for nearly 5 years. There is a slight lag but can be cured with a k&n air filter, throttle body clean and a de-cat. Once I done these 3 the car was so much more responsive. On the newer d5 I would recommend a swirl flap, egr and dpf delete with a remap and your winning, can comfortably get 250bhp out of it. I can agree that they are a little bit sloppy and definitely don’t handle like a coupe but if your good with the throttle you can always pull if through a corner with a good bit of power. Mine is an absolute beast and I will keep it forever.

@BenHur8724 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that grated with me too. My '07 XC90 has 185bhp and it's far from dangerous. Like many older TDIs it could do with a bit more bite from a standing start, but I blame the slushbox for that.
@felix31384 жыл бұрын
This logic is the wrong way around. 200hp is WAY more than enough to transport 7 people, say around 500kg. 2.2 tons is just far, FAR too heavy for vehicle that is designed to carry only 500kg. This in turn has it’s effect on wear of parts (therefore reliability), performance, fuel efficiency and maintenance cost. This is a defect in the car industry as a whole nowadays. Engines need to get ever more efficient to “save the planet”, while the weight of the vehicles are getting ridiculous! I had a Daihatsu Cuore from 1999 which weighed 0,6 tons and could carry 4 adults. So the weight equivalent “2,2 tons of Daihatsu” could carry 14 adults with 100kg to spare! Granted, a Daihatsu Cuore is an extreme oposite, so there is much room for a middle ground. But 2,2 tons for a car, come on guys!
@BenHur8724 жыл бұрын
Felix, that's a fair point but I'd rather crash at 130 km/h in the Volvo than a Daihatsu. The extra weight isn't all pointless
@felix31384 жыл бұрын
Ben Harvey I understand your point. Even that scenario was covered by Daihatsu in the form of “inherent/internal safety” You wouldn’t crash at 130km/h, because she could barely reach130km/h! 😂

I've got a 2013 one of these which I've had from new as a family wagon and the review is pretty fair. Although I think it's a really comfortable car to be in, either driving or sitting in the passenger seat. But it does everything asked of it in a kind of 'OK' way - there's are no peaks of triumph, but there's no troughs of disaster either. Been really reliable, only one major bill in the time we've had it, everything still works. It's really practical and bowls along nicely full of kids crap and a bike rack on it on the way to the middle of France for hols.The satnav is shockingly crap. Luckily I have a toy car for driving.

Richard Crossley Yeah so I heard, that’s unfortunate, but I was pretty surprised at how efficient these are considering, the XC70 5cyl Turbo petrol I had beforehand only used a little less fuel! If I drive smoothly the 8 uses around 13L/100klm combined, the XC70 used around 11. And compared to other V8s in its class the XC90 has way better efficiency.

We have a 165k mile 2003 D5 XC90 and it is the best family car for a large family - it was designed by a team of women engineers and it shows. Nothing is as comfortable or as safe for taking your family across Europe. You don't care about handling on the school run or on the motorway. I'm surprised you could not get comfortable - I drop the seat as low as possible and then angle the seat base up and then I'm happy. Even after a 19 hour drive into France I didn't ache. I did the same in a Honda FRV and it took me 2 days to recover! It is starting to get to the end of its hard life, and is now expensive to keep on the road. My wife loves it too, and the only thing we can think to replace it with is another XC90 or a VW Caravelle. Think I would rather have the Executive than the R-design as the whole premise of a Sporty 4x4 or "SUV" is stupid.

Another great review Matt, solid and dependable Volvos. Just to say, a guy at work has one of these XC90's which is a standard one that has a genuine remap by Polestar and chucks out an extra 30bhp or so, which makes a fair bit of difference. Though you wouldn't want more as it could turn out quite scary I should imagine, high speed wallowing is not recommended!
@TheTiloalfa62 жыл бұрын
That wallowing is easily fixed by a set of stiffer shocks! Bilstein B6 on mine and wow, stiff on any corner..
@phishphood4232 жыл бұрын
Contrary to what you said about the seats, I actually find them pretty good and comfortable once you get them dialed in. Not as good as a V70 or S60, but good, and everyone who rides with me always remarks about how comfortable she is. I have three separate profiles stored - one specifically for long days on the highways, one for around town etc. Sliding around in the seat isn’t really an issue on big US motorways. The ‘ol gal and I did 1,300 miles in one day last year and I was honestly comfortable the whole time! I drive an old T6 and I always describe the XC90 to people as an awesome car but simultaneously kind of crap compared to other P2 platform cars. Ride quality too - really harsh over small bumps but pretty wallowy around bends. Once you get the car up to speed and the variable assist steering turns off (approx 80 mph) the XC90 feels locked in and solid. A total road warrior - they’ll do long days at high speeds without breaking a sweat.

By the end the original XC90 was showing it’s age, so the dynamic comments are hardly surprising. It was a testament to the design how long it lasted though. Such a ground breaking car and a major influence on the SUV market in 2002. I loved the D5 engine - yes it sounds like a tank engine but then a diesel Volvo is a bit of a tank. Only major flaw was the early haldex clutches and prop shafts were garbage - I remember spending £1500 on fixing one back in the day!

I have a 2008 D5 SE Lux Geartronic. Just use it now and then for towing. In the first MOT we had to spend £1950 due to a faulty steering rack. Had to get a special Volvo Bosch Servotronic steering rack. Took the front of the car apart to get it through the MOT. 3 weeks later we got it back. Now we have the dreaded Anti Skid message. I’ve plugged my volvo DICE VIDA in and looks like it’s the Haldex unit. Currently sat in my garage whilst I pluck up enough courage to put it in for a MOT. Mines also £550 a year VED. We love it though. It’s currently parked in the garage with my new 630 BMW in it way. Two cars on £550 VED, must be mad. You mentioned the stupid remote control you get for the sat nav! She’s on 165K and the gear box hasn’t been touched!! Same oil. Not touching it

I tried everything to get on with it because the actual car did the job I needed very well, carrying dogs, rough track work and the ability to be able to chuck stuff in without being too bothered. Bought a 2004 163bhp manual from new, 210k miles later only replaced it in 2018 with.... the new generation version. Your thoughts about the performance made me think - I waited 10 months for a manual as I thought that engine and auto-gearbox was such a poor combination, not at all suited. The manual was completely different and I loved the D5 noise. It pulled a big twin axle caravan and a family of 5 around for years holidays - great fun. I'd have liked a few more bhp for that but I could get 44mpg solo on the motorway. Best car I've ever had, better than the new version. Each to their own eh?

The sat nav is old fashioned, it's a 10 Yr old car of course it is. It's like saying the display on a Nokia 8310 isn't good enough against the latest I-phone 12. Most of your reviews are in the mindset of buy and budget, but a lot are the mindset of a brand new range rover buyer when your reviewing a budget vehicle that's most likely being purchased as vehicle for a specific purpose not as the family daily.

If there's a better all round family car out there, I don't know what it is. Sure its not a sports car and certainly doesn't drive like a bmw x5 but thats not the point. Severn seats (which are the most comfortable of any car in my opinion), safest thing on the road for a precious cargo, massive boot, will tow anything. Just hugely practical.

I only got about 27mpg without the caravan and about 21mpg with. I don't drive hard. Also had sensor issues which was rather poor as it was only 2 years old at the time.
