I rock a iPod 5.5 I modded as well. What I do recommend for anyone wanting to try this is to try to find the 80GB versions of this model because it does have more RAM than the 30GB, it is also the "thicker" version that Denki ended up making which the shell replacement.
@richeyrich22038 ай бұрын
Does the 6th and 7 gen have even more ram respectively?
@nostalgiatrip18 ай бұрын
@@richeyrich2203 Yes they do but, but there is some major differences, conditions, and "drawbacks". The first is that 6th and 7th gen doesn't use the Wolfson DAC which regarded as the "Best Sounding". And second is that there is some weird "updates" and conditions with them, they use a different OS and UI that is "updated" to have some of the iPod touch and iPhones like showing a clock when the screen is dimming, you get Cover flow which is meh and laggy on the iPod and overall is a little more cumbersome. Also the 6th Gen had a weird storage limit of 128GB even when you Flash upgrade, when the 7th doesn't. They are also harder to open and easier to damage then the 5.5 gens due to the aluminum covers but possible. So my recommendation is if you only want a music player and want the best quality get a 5.5 Gen 80gb upgrade to 256 with flash and you're good. But you want an ultimate iPod with a ton up to a TB of storage for both your music and movie libraries, and also willing to deal with the metal case to mod, then get a 160GB slim 7th Gen.

I also had/have a 5.5, the main issue with using one of these in 2023 is that there is kind of a limit on how many songs you can have on it. Even if you beef up the storage you cant do anything about the RAM, when you have too many songs the low RAM causes it to crash and skip all the time. If you dont have many songs or dont need them all on the iPod all the time then they do still sound great.

Actually the old Rockbox version 3.15 you used in combination with the iFlash could be the root cause of the freezing issues and crashes you encountered. I´d always recommend to use the daily builds. There has been so much going on since 2019, also improving the compatibility with iFlash. It´s still not perfect, as rockbox simply expects a native IDE hard drive, since this is what the driver was written for. However, there is one kind of flash storage that will work flawlessly and that is a compact flash card. It´s a native IDE device and while it doesn´t offer extreme sequential speeds like modern SSD´s, it´s still a heck of a lot faster and more responsive than any HDD and is also able to outperform many modern SD cards. So if you ever want to revisit your iPod, from time to time a photographer tosses out a bunch of old compact flash cards for cheap. You may grab a 128gb one for example.
@RAndrewNeal10 ай бұрын
I'll have to look at updating mine, then. The workaround is to manage files while booted into the stock firmware, and switch to Rockbox when finished. This doesn't solve the occasional freezes and crashes though. But they're infrequent enough for me that they usually aren't more than a minor nuisance.

Yes, but also Apple wanted people to buy iPhones. Killing off the iPod forced people to either get an iPhone or look for something else. If you're heavily invested in iTunes music, you basically had no choice but to get an iPhone. As another benefit to Apple, they could get people to subscribe to Apple Music (I think it was Beats at the time).

@@matthewjbauer1990 I mean, smartphones were always destined to be the "do-everything" device. It wasn't so much forcing as much as it was the direction of the industry. Apple was just a catalyst. That's some solid pandering to millennial nostalgia, and I'm there for it. I have more or less the same iPod sitting next to me on a shelf (5.0 30gb version, though). I bought it in 2006 shortly after starting college and used it more or less daily through 2011, when I bought an iPhone. It even still works, running for 3-4 hours on its original battery. Going from burned CD-Rs and trying to cram as much as I could onto a MiniDisc, to having just... all of my music on one device that easily fit in my pocket was a complete game-changer. Now... do I actually use the thing these days? Nah. It's a fun time capsule to chill with here and there, just like my Walkman and MiniDisc player, but the combo of Apple Music on an iPhone connected to AirPods Pro 2 is just too good to pass up. If the iPod ever actually breaks (I'm guessing the HDD eventually), I'll see if I can give it a refurb with a new battery and the same SD card mod, but try to keep it more or less stock otherwise.

Yes you should still buy one because the cirrus logic sound chip was AMAZING. The playback sound quality is amazing. They’ve skipped out on the sound chips in all iPhones

It’s strange that I seem so much non-dankpods-iPod-content recently. I like it! Back in the day, I always wanted an iPod, but I was poor, so I only had one of those terrible USB-Stick-MP3-players that used an AAA battery and had this tiny two-way-joystick. Then after a hand-me-down nano, around 10 years ago I finally got what I wanted back in the day, an (used) iPod (video), and also started nodding around (this is also why I found DankPods quite early). I amassed quite a few since then, mostly 5th-7th gentbh I don’t hear a difference between the 5 and the 5.5, but still, those are nifty devices! I did not do too many mods in the past (battery, iFlash, occasionally a new case), but I might attempt a Bluetooth-mod in the future. Congratulations to your „new“ iPod!

I love my full transparent faceplate and wheel, but the all yellow and black is so clean. It is more so my car's music player now since I got the fiio m11s, but for like a hundred bucks or so and a bit of know how, it's hard to argue that a refurbed ipod isn't a solid pick.

I recently found my iPod shuffle (2nd gen) and fell in love with it again

In the 2000s I graduated college, went through grad school, and was a young professional. So the first MP3 player I got was a Creative Labs that was pretty good. The interface wasn't quite as well as the original iPads when it came to the touch dial. My roommate actually found a fully functional iPad (classic) on the side of a road. But as far as quality line out with headphones, they were all good. Also I would say with this comment about what DAC chips are present with a player: sometimes there might be something with EQ or DSP...but especially brand of DAC chip means nothing. I've had high end components with DAC chips deemed bright sounding, and their analog output pretty muddy sounding.

Totally would use that.... I never had an iPod back then as they were crazy expensive and the right mp3 player would be smaller and mach cheaper. So I bought a tiny SanDisk mp3 player, which is sized like a thicker iPod shuffle BUT WITH A DISPLAY!!! it's fun to listen to music without a smartphone!

I would llke to get a Ipod that I could mod with a new battery , flash storage, and Bluetooth. Still looking for a used one that is affordable.

I still rock my 5th gen iPod classic when I'm walking out and about or when I'm driving - it's a part of me. A girl I was seeing again after years of not speaking, scoffed when she saw I still was rocking my iPod. She said it was outdated technology ... adorable comment. If you don't know any better, I can see why one would say that, but if you actually take a peek around, there are all kinds of adapters for the iPod to pair with newer technology.

I still daily drive my Ipod classic (5.5 gen too) because of the fact it was set up by my uncle who shares my music taste. So pretty much every old school american rock band is on it. I could never have that sort of library on spotify. So I use the Ipod on my daily commute to college

Picked up two of them a couple of years ago. I put a new battery in each one. The hard disc is finally starting to show it's age so that'll be the next thing I address. You're spoiled for choice in these things and my recommendations are the 4th gen/mini. These are the first ones that worked with windows pcs and the Gameboy style screen is visible in daylight. You also want to download the actual exe file from Apple directly since the iTunes app in the Microsoft store doesn't contain the support files for the ipod and is just a music player interface.

I just bought a charger for my old iPod this Black Friday before seeing this video today. I was feeling nostalgic as well 😂 I just had the patience to at least change the battery but nevertheless it feels good listening to old songs you can’t find on s Spotify

I have two 5.5 gen 80gb iPods. One white that I personally use, and a black one with a collapsed center button but it still has all of the original owner's stuff: 6895 tracks!

This is nostalgic. When i was in high school i took apart one of these in order to install a transparent faceplate (which i waited like over a year for because the company i bought it from was super flaky)

I don't like iPods, never did. I did own an iPod touch back in the day because I wasn't allowed a tablet or smart phone, so I convinced my parents that an iPod touch was an mp3 player primarily, not an iPhone without cellular. If I needed an Mp3/Mp4 player today, I'd get a Walkman, maybe I'd look for a 40th anniversary cassette player Walkman mp4 player.

I’m hoping we get to the stage soon where you can build one entirely out of upgraded aftermarket parts. Yes I know there are other portable media players out there but this form factor was never bettered

well just dusted my 6th gen 80 gig, will definitely do this refurbish and customization. The only reason i stopped using it is the jack that was broken and in that time i didn't knew much and someone told me you had to break the screen so didn't want to do it.

I did the exact same thing with my 5.5, minus the faceplate and click wheel swap. To the T. I use it all the time; I like to have my music library in a dedicated device, made just for music.
