The Pi 400 ( Pi 4 in a keyboard) seems to be the most cost effective Pi 4 right now. Long term Pis may save money for 7/24 operation. a couple 100 watt light bulbs jumped my bill $50 a month when left on 7/24. The Pi 400 also comes with the Latest Pi 4 CPU running at 1.8 GHz instead of 1.5, stock. Good luck folks

And there are a few left in stock at their original price in some places, contrary to any other pi4 (or pi3). We're talking about just a few hundreds here, a few hundreds there, though, so they will be gone in a matter of days, or a couple of weeks I reckon.

@@Lukes-Tech Early Pi 4s are limited to 1.5GHz stock by the first generation CPU. It is also used on the lower memory Pi 4 boards. That is why a 2019 date on the 8Gb board may be a warning about the CPU version. You can bypass many Pi video issues by using the Pi thru a remote desktop connection. In this case video is handled by a client computer and the Pi 4 acts as a host. This is also a great way to use a Pi running linux with another computer, ( Windows, MacOS, or linux ) Your linux desktop or application is displayed from your Pi on another computer. This is how Unix, which inspired Linux, originally worked. One computer on your desk handled the screen keyboard and mouse. Applications tan on a remote host. Now Linux squeezes both function onto one system, but it does not have to work this way. That old laptop, or netbook can be souped up, using a Pi 4 as a host. A tablet or phone can also act as a client/ display computer. Your Pi 4 can run a current updated OS, even if your Display machine no longer gets updates. I am thinking of Android or MacOs, but 32 bit linux system might fit here as well. A machine running an unsupported version of Windows might be better used running a supported version of Linux directly. In any case, a Pi 4 Host can add power and versatility to any system, including another Pi 4 ( Two Pi 400 are cheaper in all up cost than a fully configured Pi 4 alone in many cases. I hope to see more Pi videos on this channel, things are always changing especially OS support. Thanks and god bless you all.

100 watts per bulb? Either you stole a couple of Edison bulbs from some museum or you're using some ultra-bad-ass LED bulbs. In one month, a couple of 100-watt bulbs consume 2 * 0.1 kW * 24 h/day * 30 day = 144 kWh. If you're paying $50 for 144 kWh, you're paying $0.35 per kWh, which is outrageously expensive. Where do you live?

It’s getting harder and harder to justify buying Regular pi 4. For a project board the requires Custom programming and GPIO I would still buy one. But for a low cost desk computer (not for games) I would buy a low end Ryzen Laptop. At this rate the Raspberry Pi will price itself out of range for most home users. A pi 5 would have to be targeted for commercial customers that could afford to buy them.
@jeffreyplum5259

The Pi 400 has access to the GPIO pins. You need a ribbon cable to bring them out for use, but it can be done easily. It is also easier to replace if things go south on you. The only Pi 4 I see today at a nearly sane price is the Canakit 2Gb Pi 4 bundle on Amazon. The Pi 400 is the sane Pi 4 version at the moment. Its price may go up too or it may go out of stock. Unfortunately Pi folks will be doing much more waiting than buying until prices fall to more sane levels . Good Luck folks!

At this pi prices are near to a used mini size used PC. It has a stronger CPU, more memory, more ports. The power need is bigger, but you can use power management to turn off not needed parts. Pi uses 15W , mini pc is about 30W. Or some NAS can use same platform.

Regarding pi5, I don’t think so they gonna release it any time soon, iirc eben upton said that their current priority is fixing out supply chain issues of the pi4, and then they gonna release the pi4A aswell, the reason that they didn’t released the pi4A was because their current supply couldn’t even satisfy the current pis demand, so they stopped working on the pi4A, so if I have to guess, the pi5 project took the backseat, but I for sure would love if pi foundation gave us all a surprise and released a pi5 soon The current situation really sucks, I bit the bullet and ordered a pi for twice the MSRP, unfortunately I had no choice cuz nothing comes close to the niche the pi fits in, I use my pi as a portable desktop solution since I can just chuck it in my backpack and ssh or VNC into it using my iPad, which makes it a pretty small portable laptopish device, so even twice the MSRP is still better deal than the X86 pcs in pi’s form factor which cost 4-5 times as much, and support for other arm SBC is nowhere near as much as pi has Edit: here in my country, the pi400 are selling at even higher price than pi4, so that’s out of question aswell

Went again today to Raspberry PI store UK, Cambridge, since I had to go to that part of town anyway. I plied further and they say their manufacturing is now up to 50,000 units a day but the Raspberry Pi 3B+ (£33) and and CM4 (£?) face shortages since they are in the most demand by commercial and industrial clients which order in bulk and they still have these orders to fufill. They said 50K may seem alot but they have a back log of bulk orders to get out. The RPi Zero2WH (£13.50) was out of stock but you can still buy all the 4 models (£33 - 1Gb, £40 - 2Gb, £53 - 4Gb , £73 - 8Gb) and the 400 (£65 - unit only) from the shop. They said nothing about a Pi5 though. They said things should start to rectify soon...meaning about first Q of 2023 to be back to 'normal' , probably. Bought a Zero (£5) and a ZeroW (£9.50). Still limited to one model of each per customer - maybe they will limit to one RPi ONLY per customer soon? Ho hum.

At that price most used phones are not only cheaper but more powerful as well. I put ubuntu on my old poco f1 and it easily runs modded minecraft, avorion or factorio servers. A simply hub and you can use it for most projects. An old poco f1 for example has 6 gigs of ram and has around 2 and a half times the compute power of a raspberry pi 4. You also get a battery and a screen in addition all for 70-80 bucks on ebay. Back when it was 35 bucks and had a very low power consumption I could still understand its use but now I find it honestly underwhelming. An Atmega microprocessor or Adriano board is many times more efficient and computewise enough for the majority of projects with a pricetag of only 10 to 20€. And if you actually need something more powerful an old phone will generally give you alot more for the money and you won’t contribute to more e-waste by reusing an old phone which might otherwise just gather dust.

I'd been using Arduino UNO microcontroller development boards since about August 2021. Due to the complexity of some of my projects I came to realize I needed more options and wanted to expand my interests to using microprocessors. In March 2022, I began looking into using the Raspberry Pi 4 because of all the great reviews and coverage these boards were getting on the web. My research revealed a staggering price increase of more than 500% in only a few months. I quickly changed my mind about moving on to microprocessors such as the Raspberry Pi 4. This is unfortunate, because there are tons of project ideas for the Raspberry Pi 4 on KZbin. However, most of those videos were made when the price of a Raspberry Pi 4 was between 35$ and 45$! How much more will people have to pay for a Pi 5? Have computer prices increased significantly since the pandemic? What about other electronic products such as Arduino microcontroller development boards? No. So, what makes the Raspberry Pi so special that its distributors can justify their absurd price increases? Didn't the pandemic also affect the manufacturers of microcontroller or computer chips? It's said that the Raspberry Pi 400 can deliver as much as the Pi 4, and that the only real significant difference between the two is their form factor. The Raspberry Pi 4 is more compact, but at its current price I have to agree that it's not worth buying it until the prices come down significantly.

It's basically like buying an old quad core 32 bit computer limited to 4gb RAM with no 3D video card option, that can't run Windows 7. But you can run Manjaro and Firefox and that's about it. I decided instead to upgrade four Dell Optiplex Core2Duo miniPCs to Q6600's and 4gb RAM and SSD drives. So I can run pirated Windows 7 on about the same level hardware. Luckily I did everything before Covid. As someone who's tried so many Linux distros going back to the 386, I can tell you, almost all of them and their apps swwwk. Even if you're not a linux hater, you got to admit, life on a Linux Desktop is pretty absymal. Its a great system for a server or webserver, but not a deskop. Yes, you can use it as a desktop. KDE, Enlightment, Gnome, nICE, whatever you want, but next to a Windows 7 machine, or a Mac, yeah, you're going to jump shit anywhere else but Linux and flee back to Windows or Mac.

I’m curious about the pi 400 and only for 100 smackers, will use this instead of the twister pi4 and make a pi station with it instead. Can you explain how an old pc is a better option to use as a server over the pi4? I would say that is where pi's really shine over everything else. What can an old pc do as a server that a pi can't? Then when you factor energy use, sound levels and physical size the pi is perfect for home servers?

You can run an old pc headless. Use wakeonlan to turn it on and shut it down. You don’t need it in your own bedroom. All it needs is an Ethernet cable and power cable.

@@jonny777bike Thanks but that didn't answer my question. I asked why an old PC is the better option over a raspberry pi, Not what can we do to make an old PC a bearable option to us as a home server.

@@tommyt4062 an old pc from a school that is giving them for free is better than giving the money to the scalpers. Amazon, eBay and other platforms are allowing these scalpers to thrive. Ultimately we need laws to severely punish these scalpers as well as the platforms that allow this. Hat makers should look into using usb-c. Platforms like Amazon and eBay need better regulation and especially with the 3rd party sellers. It’s ultimately up to us to reach to the law makers and craft laws that would criminalize this activity nationally and internationally.

I bought 6 of the pi4 8GB pre covid impact for about 80 bucks each. I run Ubuntu. I wouldnt buy them today given they are 200 bucks. I had problems with the USB 3.0 ports going bad on one of them.

for some perspective... they aren't designed to be a day to day desktop comparable to a PC. First, they were developed based on the old BBC educational systems used in schools I'm the UK. Kids learning to code or as a Dev platform for controlling external components like sensors, machine learning, IoT and robotics and more. so... I always get a little frustrated when they are reviewed and compared to a PC. The fact that they can do desktop tasks is pretty cool. But, they were never intended to be one. the Pi 400 was really a response to remote Learning...again. Raspi Foundation got lucky...in a way... with covid. The 400s were a cheap and simple solution for working from home...cheaply... for things like video conference and desktop apps for work. So yea.. Comparing a raspi 4 to a PC is like comparing a semi truck to a pickup. Yea, they can both haul stuff but they each have a specific purpose they were designed for. 😉
