I knew a lady who took her Chevy Into the dealership for service . It only had 30,000 miles on it but they told her she needed a ' Power Steering Flush ' . They said if she didnt get it done , It would void her warranty . Afterwords I checked her owners manual looking for the Recommended Time / Mileage that Power steering fluid should be changed but there was nothing about it in the Owners manual . So I called the 800 Number in the manual and talked to GM . They keep putting me on hold . So I figured it was just a rip off that the dealer was doing on that lady . I called the Attorney Generals office and told them it was a ripoff . A car with only 30k miles on it isnt required to have its power steering changed . They told me to call the Dealer and tell them we were filing a complaint and that a 2 year old car with 30k miles on it , did NOT require a Power Steering flush . I called the dealer / service writer and told him he ripped her off . He never disagreed and just said " Send her back " . They refunded her $88.oo for the Power Steering flush and never said a word . Bottom Line ? Dealers will rip you off especially if you are a woman who knows nothing about cars .

Another way of doing hydraulic power steering fluid change: You can also put the front wheels off of the ground on jack stands, and take off one end of a power steering hose. Put several drain pans underneath. Then turn the wheels left and right a few times. Put the hose back on and refill the reservoir with power steering fluid. Start the engine, let it idle, then slowly turn the steering back and forth all of the way until you have smooth, quiet steering and enough fluid in the reservoir. Keep adding fluid as needed. Then cap the reservoir, put the car on the ground, and test drive it. This is also what you end up doing if you have to replace a bad power steering pump like I did on two different Subarus.

I have been in the hvac-r business 45 years. the copeland compressor company no longer make the small "TIN CAN' compressors, they are sourced out to "EMBRACO", and they just get out of warrantee( 1 year warrantee) when they fail, so there is no claim for getting a free replacement compressor.

thanks Scotty for being brutally and even humorously honest. I manage a lube and general repair shop in the hot California desert and because I'm such a religious car maintenance guy it genuinely disturbs and even maddens me the huge trend of neglect I see my customers do to their cars. granted it's a low income community and very few people have money or the cars worth maintaining but they get mad when they neglect their cars and blame me or others when me and my guys go by the book and pride ourselves in honest business. customers with batteries testing at 20 cca out of 600 cca say no thanks I don't want a battery. customers go 15k miles or much more in desert heat on conventional oil until they run the engine bone dry of oil and all fluids and say no I don't want anything but the cheapest oil change. it's their cars but don't blame others when things go horribly wrong. if people knew the benefit and long term savings of simple car maintenance they would think again before waiting until major repairs are needed. I mean why drive a car if u can't care for it it doesn't make sense and u have been preaching it for years so thanks for doing what u can to make people see the light because they don't believe me. I even show many customers your videos to prove to them. well, ally American brand cars have lasted me half a million miles and still looked and ran great when I upgraded cuz I'm a firm believer in frequent maintenance so at least my cars will look and run great while those fools are stranded on the roadside stuck with a huge repair bill lmao hahahaha

I do it where it takes only 1 time and approximately 10 seconds for a complete exchange. Jack up the front of the car turn wheel full left. Remove as much Fluid from resovior as posible . Disconnect return line and attach a hose extension to a bucket. Temporary plug the reservoir return nipple. Fill resovior with fresh Fluid. Simultaneously start car, turn the wheel full right while filling resovior. Immediately stop engine. Reconnect the return hose. Refill resovior as needed. Start engine ,turn wheel full left, shut off engine. Recheck level. This method you're completely eliminating all the dirty Fluid in one shot instead of diluting the dirt by sucking the reservoir 5 or 6 times.

Hey Scotty, thanks for all the informative vids. Why wouldn't you just pump all the fluid out of the system at once by hooking the pump up to the ps line? Thnx!
@procrastinatingnerd2 жыл бұрын
I think the best thing you can do for your power steering is to Never hold it at it's extremes. When you turn the wheel all the way and pull on the steering wheel to hold the tires so you can turn as tight as possible. Don't do it, when you hear that whining noise as your trying to turn the wheels as far as possible, That's the steering pump trying to push MAX pressure, that's wearing everything out. The seals, the pump, the fluid, it destroys the entire steering system. I have always turned my wheel until it stops then turn it back a quarter turn or so, so it's not whining and wearing out. 377,000 miles and still have all the original steering system components. Edit: I don't think that we have seen all the ways electronic assist can fail yet, but I would imagine that holding your steering wheel at the extremes would be hard on electronic assist as well.

Now it may be that you have to heat up the engine compartment considerably so that Lucas liquefies but I took no chances. I sucked out all the residue from it cleaned it out and I don’t See it leaking anymore it’s possible Lucas did its job and sealed the unit where the hole was because I don’t see it leaking but in any event I’m sure information might help

Heads up: Some cars use ATF in their power steering systems Including Scotty's 2007 Matrix lol It's supposed to be Dexron III fluid! Definitely read the car manual and read what the lid says. Most times it tells you exactly what fluid it requires. Also, taking the reservoir's return line off and pouring in new fluid while turning the wheel is a better way to swap out the steering fluid.
@shinola228 Жыл бұрын
Right. But maybe what he's using is compatible ? Anyway, yes it's a more thorough flushing to do it the way you mentioned. Just raise both front wheels off the ground to do it. No need to start the engine. Also you'll need to temporarily attach a short length of tubing to the return port on the reservoir during the procedure and clamp it so it doesn't drain fresh fluid.

Scotty, I had made the same mistake like some others and accidently poured in the regular PS fluid and noticed right away. I had not researched whether the fluid was correct and immediately changed it out to honda fluid. Lucky it was a honda so it still works great.

Scotty, after hearing you recommend using Akebono ceramic brake pads and high carbon painted rotors, I finally did a 4 wheel brake job on my Camry and my braking system is so much smoother, and grips better than the Toyota OEM brakes. Thank you for the tip.

8:20 Scottys sons fridge had a new design on the compressor and ran alot quieter. yeah, it's quieter cuz it broke only 3 yrs. after my son bought it. It *SUCKS* that it broke, but the tone of Scottys voice & the look on his face when he was explaining the situation was funny.😲😲😲

I wonder why Toyota recommends ATF Dextron III for power steering fluid when the fluid that came in my 4Runner is clear...

*costs less than a down payment for a new car to fix on a paid off car that has no loan or interest* Scotty: "It could cost a fortune!" Thats the advice from a "professional" that hates dealerships.

I think I know the answer, but I would be curious to know what Scotty thinks of inline power steering filters.

Have you considered or tried using your fluid extractor for a coolant exchange or is it just too hard to get it all?

Every time I change the oil I grabbed the turkey baster and suck out both brake fluid and power steering fluid that is in the reservoir and fill it back to the full line. Haven't had a power steering pump or brake cylinder failure in 2 decades.

Great reminder. I do it this way anyway, but not for a while.......

So.... What about bleeding the air out? Does this process avert introducing air into the system thereby not requiring a bleed process?

I use gravity. Take both lines off the res tank. Return to a bucket and the other i push a slightly smaller tube into it with a large funnel on the other end. Fix the funnel to the hood and fill. Go get a beer or coffee and come back later. When the return is showing clean fluid coning out. You are done.

Yes, Toyota states that Dexron II or III ATF must be used as power steering fluid.

I did it by taking of the low pressure hose and having a friend holding it in a container as I emptied it by steering back and forth with the car lifted up. That way the steering doesn’t lock up, with it lifted I mean. Empty, refill, empty. We did this until it turned green which was the color I used. It was pitch black when we started. That pump was whining so much now it’s dead silent. Did this back in April. Still green as grass!

Thanks for the advice. My power steering fluid is pretty dirty and I'm 2 cycles into emptying and refilling the reservoir. 5 or 6 times like you said will probably be about right.

I recently changed my power steering pump on my 2008 Chevy Silverado.... I bought a new one and the shaft was around 3/4 " shorter than the 1 l took off!! I was worried! but it looks a better fit and so far runs good. So don't trust the parts will be correct if you buy a second hand vehicle! 😐😐😀😀
