THAT MIND TRICK WORKS!! I'm trying to start my drone business but before that I was a tennis instructor for 4 years. I got SICK AND TIRED of cancellations so I used EXACTLY that mind trick. Prices went up and NO ONE screwed with me or canceled last minute again. Happy business from then on :)

Good discussion. Pricing is one of the hardest things to master as a growing entrepreneur in a creative field, especially when the reality of making the deals is a matter of putting food on the table and keeping the electricity on. Losing those "frugal" clients is a tough life lesson sometimes, but once you know the facts about your daily cost of doing business it makes it a lot easier to stick to your guns when quoting what you think is a high price. It's really awesome when it works out!

you are worth what you believe - but you have to have the talent to back it up. 20 years as a photographer and there are still markets around the world (non fashion based ex) which have no idea of going rates - regardless of experience. A PIC has to prove why they're worth whatever their rate is - and like a photographer must prove their worth - professionalism and talent will build your client list and the referrals will keep coming. :)

I agree with you on pricing yourself higher than you THINK you're worth. ESPECIALLY as you get experience. You're better off spending your time and energy getting higher paying jobs than working your butt off for the bargain kickers. I have built up a nice Voice Over business over the past couple of years. I work about 3-5 hours a day and I won't even touch a one time job for less than $300. Some jobs are 2-3 minutes long and pay over $1000. BUT those are clients that want service. They want and need a professional who can deliver a quality product and won't bat an eye for that price. They have a 6 figure project for their client and they need it done right.

Just as a point the company that's paying $25 an hour May well be taking care of a lot of expenses that you would have to take care of if you were an entrepreneur. For example if you just have your licensing show up and punch the clock for $25 an hour using their equipment, their insurance, their sales staff to get you jobs, their accountant paying your employee taxes and benefits the mere fact that your job is done when you punch the clock and go home can be worth a substantial amount of money. Remember to factor those things into the value you are talking about when you are discussing being an employee versus being an entrepreneur.

Drone work is such a risky venture that charging low can be counter productive. Half of the commercial drone pilots I know have experienced a crash; part of your fee has to reflect your liability cost.

there was a video that you all did that was call something like "What to charge for drone projects?" or something along those lines. But I can't locate it. Is it under a different title?

If you want to charge the high bucks, you might get one job a week for a few hours. Or you could charge a lower rate that keeps the jobs coming in and you'll make more money in the long run.
