I love classic cars, I always have. I'm restoring a 1974 Toyota FJ45 currently and the build is taking longer than I would like. Check out the video series here.
kzbin.info/www/bejne/q564eJ6VZtynmbs
In the meantime, I am not keen on driving a crappy car while I complete the FJ45. So in a flash of brilliance (or madness), I bought a fully restored 1956 Chevrolet pickup truck as my daily driver. This week on Jafffa Adventures, I share that experience with you. The question is, should you buy a classic car as your daily driver?
I share with you some pitfalls in owning a classic car as your daily driver that will help you avoid potential buyer remorse.
Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride...and of course keep the shiny side up!

My first car was a 1978 Chevy Nova. Those big, ugly, slow Novas. It was so uncomfortable, loud, slow, dangerous, smelled like gas all the time, no climate, no comfort features, yet I had a blast driving it. I still miss that car every day. Never left me stranded on the side of the road, a real road warrior.

Good video. I have a 55 F100 that probably could do the daily but that’s if I don’t care about driving it in rain or snow or leaving it parked where just any opportunist with a tow truck could haul it away. A lot of these questions you propose should be asked but it’s doubtful the smitten would let them stop them from learning the hard way. Crikey, I bought mine off the freaking internet. I consider myself lucky.

That's "Exactly" why we drive them! 😁 (I drove my '28 A Model Roadster P/U as a daily for many years, in fact well over a decade including attending night school over an hour away, yes... in the country, in Winter & no heater 😉) It's just what we do 😎😎 Another great video Terry, I'm slowly getting through your collection & loving them. I should be in the workshop being a Sunday, but it's just too cold today. At least I got my old truck running again yesterday after the big Cooling upgrade (yeah, I did say it's currently cold 🤣) anyway, so sitting here with a beer watching your great content in the warmth & trying not to feel guilty cause once I get my old camping rig done I should be working on a real car like my '34 Chevy Delivery, my '38 dual cab Beer barrel or my dodge speedster, but not working isn't too bad atm. Thanks again!

I just bought a 1970 Jaguar xj6 with a 350 chevy v8... my first car. Overall, the car's in great condition and I did enough research before deciding to buy it. I thought hard about all the cons about owning a classic and still wanted it real bad... but it's too previous to make it my daily driver so I'll buy a cheap used car in a few months and use that most days and keep this for the weekends. Enjoyed your vidd and agree with everything you said. Peace

I love the look too. You hit the nail on the head mate, if you appreciate the old cars but not the associated upkeep, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying from the sidelines. I love the though of flying, but not the training, time, or cost to get a pilots license. Therefore, I’m happy watching KZbin videos on it to fill that cup of mine. You sound like you're trying to talk people out of old cars, but then you get to confessing that you love them. I don't drive mine daily, but I take it out weekly for an errand or just a joy ride, plus of course montly club outings. My '53 Packard Clipper DeLuxe is quieter and more comfortable than a pickup. With overdrive, it will easily keep up with modern freeway traffic. Without power steering, though, I don't parallel park. Keep on having fun.

Thats beautiful I love it. You should take it down to Canberra next January for the Summernats, I've just returned from there. Another reason not to daily a classic is that you can put them on club rego and save a fortune on rego costs. In fact you could have 5 or 6 classic cars for the price of 1 car on normal full rego. Each state is different so check your states regulations. It costs me $50 per year to be a club member $30 per year for paperwork validation and $46 per year for registration cost. If you have multiple cars then you can divide the club membership up per car which will bring the cost per car down. I have a friend with 2 cars and a motorbike on club rego. Keep up the great work I love your videos.
@JafffaAdventures
@JafffaAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words mate, I sincerely appreciate it. The downside of club rego in Qld is that you can only drive a 15km radius from your home unless you are going to a sanctioned event or for repairs. It’s a very enticing proposition however, the costs you outlined are a serious consideration. Have a great week mate 😎👍
@FlatBrokeAdventures
@FlatBrokeAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
That's a bugger here in NSW we have a log book and get 60 days use per year. We also get 1 day per week maintenance run which we're limited to 50 ks I think from home which don't come off our logbook days. Plus club runs which also don't come off logbook.

Here in California registration is the same. Many of my friends have collector car insurance because it is so cheap. I don't like the restrictions (miles, events only, locked garage, etc). I pay regular insurance so I can drive anywhere anytime. I drive my '53 Packard Clipper DeLuxe somewhere each week, plus of course on club outings at least every month. It makes me happy.

@@JafffaAdventures I should have also mentioned that I fixed up my 1980 International Scout II Diesel last year and installed a new A/C system so I could drive it all summer. It meets every criteria of inconvenience of any other classic but it is awesome to drive (as long as you don't need to go anywhere faster than 65mph) because you don't get soaked with sweat. I may install A/C on the Camaro but it didn't have it originally and its a numbers matching big block so I am hesitant.

What about the emergency brake? I daily drive a 1962 vw bug, with a single circuit master cylinder. I know it won't stop as quickly, but I have trained myself to be ready for brake failure, and I know automatically to pull the E-brake. I actually practice this on empty roads, just to see how it reacts. It stops straight because I adjust my brakes regularly. Do you think this could be ok, versus updating the master cylinder for the time being?
