#askhomesteady Hi my name is Frank, I’m 13, and I’ve always been drawn too homesteading. It’s great to see people like you help show the lifestyle, but I don’t think there is enough information out there, and I don’t have access to ask a farmer in person about how you start. It’d be great if you could make a video about where to get information on this stuff. Thanks.

Golf was used instead of archery in Scotland when weapons were confiscated. they used metal or stone balls with them.

Id love a mini jersey but at 7k for a mini heifer, and 1200 for a bred cow, im gonna go with standard jersey. Have you had a lot of calving issues with the jerseys?

To have cows you need land, access to water, fencing, time and knowledge. For knowledge read everything from Greg Judy and watch his KZbin channel. You should also watch Homesteady's interview with his as well.

I just love the look of Lady Bug's daughter her colour and markings are beautiful - my grandfather breed and showed jersey cows in New Zealand and I remember riding the girls when milking was finished they are a very relaxed breed of cow but we were never ever allowed in the jersey bull paddock they are not as calm or as trustworthy, that is where the saying never turn your back on a jersey bull

As for milking, I heard that Jerseys will produce even after two weeks of not milking making them a great cow if you have to travel. I also heard that they are good with knowing their boundaries. Is this all true? God bless

#askhomesteady Have you ever considered breeding for a small herd of Mini Jersey's. I ask because you seem to have a good set of Dam's. the two heifer calf's are perfect imo. With so many people looking for a family milk cow specifically Mini's. You have plenty of pasture to do it. Has this crossed your mind? I know Austin you love your camel's but wouldn't mini's be more profitable?

#askhomesteady Hi. Thanks for answering my last question. Have another! We like to take about a week and a half vacation in May to Florida. Is it possible to do that with a milk cow or is May a bad month to leave? We pick May cuz it just seems to be the best month to go to Florida. Also, I love seeing Honeybee. I want MORE!!! I use to have a little dog named Honeybee, as cute as can be.

She looks like a normal sized Jersey with stumpy legs 😂. How you are going to breed your cow is crucial to the decision about what type of cow. I don't have access to AI so I have girls who are compatible with my beefer bull

cow for sure goat dont give very much milk, and costly to feed, fence and you need to like the taste of goat, here goats are the last thing anyone wants, in fact you have a hard time even finding one, a nice cow you get great beef, and enough milk to over flood your home, but go with a good beef cross cow

Couldn't you milk your cow in the morning, be gone all day, and milk it at night whenever you got back? Could you train it to be used to that schedule? Could you mitigate the two milkings a day by just having the calf suckle if you didn't have time? #askhomesteady

In the USA calves start in the $3500 range, females close to $7000. A cow camel in milk usually is $10,000 and up depending on age, a cow camel in her prime is closer to $20,000. Finding them is the tricky part, look at exotic animal auctions and camel dairies culling. Great #askhomesteady topic.

Been milking for over 20 years all breeds and I've never had to use a calf to have milk let down.. But that isn't the case on this homestead because they calf share... The momma cow will hold her "hind milk" (the fatty foods) back for her calf .. this is the top quality creamy that is best for making butter.. when you have a cow that has calf shared she holds this milk back special for the health of her young.

#ASKHOMESTEADY Can you eat mini Jersey cows?
@tylerconklin5206
@tylerconklin5206 4 жыл бұрын
As a dairy farmer, I don’t think a dairy breed is right for this specific management style. If you want to calf share and be inconsistent with milking, a Dexter or a placid beef cow make more sense. Mini jerseys are more of a designer or pasture ornament. You don’t need to use New Zealand genetics to have an animal that perform well on a grass based system. All of the bull studs have a group of bulls they recommend for grass or low input producers. Do you guys post dip your milk animals after you finish milking? #askhomesteady
