The one thing i'll give film school over no film school (but there are ways to get the same benefits) is networking. You literally will be working next to your classmates for the duration of your career. I got my very first jobs out of film school with classmates, i still work beside many of them depending where I'm cutting/shooting. It was nice getting feedback from industry professionals as well (I had some pretty amazing professors one was audio engineer on Requiem for a Dream) so learned quite a lot from them, but DOING was the best teacher. No matter what craft you do/what you study there is always learning to be done outside the classroom. Nice video Matti, wonder if any of the snow is left after this thaw ;)

I totally agree. Networking and the people you get to interact with on a daily basis is the primary reason for film school but does not make film school a requirement for success.
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 7 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not a requirement for success (film school). You can network etc in things like those 24 your film challenges etc. There is no guarentee for success, I went to film school with people who became business consultants, and work in the industry with people with science and business degrees.

If you don’t know too much about film and you don’t have access to the equipment, I believe it’s 100% worth it if you are gonna commit to it. It’s all about the hands on experience and surrounding yourself with people who are motivated. You can learn online but instead of bingeing on a million tutorials tucked nicely in bed, you should execute the things you learn and reflect on the results. The only way to learn properly is to make something. Good luck to anyone and remember to HAVE FUN.👍🏻😊

About growing your channel, I am by NO means a big channel, but in the last 2 weeks I have gained 200 subs by just being social. Not the only reason I have grown, but it is a huge factor, just commenting on other channels and things. I have gone from under 100 for 2 years, to 100 in mid December to 330 now. After making more quality content, socializing is the best advise I believe :) a 14 year old filmmaker...

I think if you are self-disciplined and hungry to learn you are better doing it on your own vs. if you need guidance and a little bit of hand-holding School is the way to. There is also a perk going to school is that you have a support system, networking etc. So there are pros and cons on both sides.

In a way, yes, but there are people who I have seen needs a guidance (initial hand holding) but they do get success once they understand the concept. There are many factors to what kind of hand-holding you need. I wouldn't say if they need hand-holding mean you suck but it may take more time to get where a daily grinder gets with cosistency and hardwork.

I had the film school question - thank you so much for answering! At the moment I'm 16 years old so I do still have some time to decide if I go to a filmschool but I actually think you're right! You don't need to spend this much money anymore just to learn about some special filming techniques because it's all right here - on the internet! And I also think you can get around the fact that you get connections with other directors etc. by just being active on social media or other platforms. At the end they might also come to you. Anyway, I still have so much to learn about filmmaking and I'm just exploring how big my passion actually is. Keep on making youtube videos - your content really helps me!

Thanks for this advice Mattih! Just started watching your videos after seeing you on Pete's channel. My joy and love for creating videos started nearly 10 years ago with a high school project. I went to film school after 5 years professional work, it's nice to get a qualification, but the main reason was to get access to the industry through the school's connections, and build relationships and teams. It worked, didn't learn too much on the technical side but was still interesting and got loads of new work and access to the industry. Choose a good school!

I highly recommend posting "Free Wedding Portraits" rather than shooting a wedding for free. A wedding is a BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG day and very important to capture it. If you do not believe you can capture it properly then leave it to someone more experienced. There are lots of people who have had bad wedding photographers and would love to have some new wedding portraits. Literally on facebook groups etc - post "Free Wedding Portraits" not portraits during the wedding but for a couple that would like some more portraits. Additionally, if you can not find a bride or groom, if you have a pretty girl in the family ask if they would be willing to pose for you in a Wedding dress and then just rent a nice dress from Davids Birdal etc.

In second thought my statement doesn't apply as well for Video, but you could still do some B-Roll with a pretty girl in a wedding dress, enough to get your comfort level up then start shooting the real deal. Biggest thing IMO would be making sure your audio is on point.

100%!!! On a gimbal or steadicam, its kinda sucks. It's heavy lens so for handhold is pretty fine.

I did go to film school, it's called the KZbin School of Cinematography. Current grad student. My professors are Matti, Peter McKinnon, Justin Odisho and Casey Neistat.

Going to school versus learning on KZbin is a lot about time. There is also a lot of horrible teaching online and if you don't know any better you will learn wrong....pick a good school and consider the money......it can be a lot of money! As I was typing this you mentioned Bible school. Would love to hear that part of your story!

I've been making KZbin videos for over a year now and still have just under 200 subs after 25 videos. The frustrating part of growth is watching your skills get better but not seeing any success from it. My current videos are shot and edited much better than my first handfull, but ive never had any surge of popularity or subscribers. My content may not be astounding but i still feel its better than 200 sub level.

Mattih, PLEASE give some advice on export settings from premiere/FCPX that you'd recommend for uploads be that YT/Insta etc. I film in a high quality 1080 codec with the GH5 and I render in apple pro-res HQ. I've always exported as h.264 but YT & Instagram ANNIHILATES the quality. Your videos are in 1080 but are always crisp and clear, no pixelation at all. Is there something I should do in the timeline/render/export settings differently so they don't get crushed upon upload? Dying for help with this! P.S. The new LOG versions of the Cine LUTs 2.0 are brilliant! I love using them.

Great vid. Was that Horseshoe Valley? I went to film school close to 20 years ago and I think it was valuable in some respects, but overall it was kind of disappointing and didn't really lead me where I wanted to go. I think just watching you and Peter and some of the other guys you hang with has taught me more creatively than anything I picked up in school.. but then again 20 years ago we didn't have KZbin. Watching video online wasn't a thing. Hell, I was still shooting on tape! Oh how times have changed...

I'd absolutely love to do something for others, but i'm only 15 and I don't know that much. I've only been learning through youtube, i'm watching tutorials every single day. Most of it I learned from you Matti, and Peter, so thank you so much for being here and making videos for us! You're by far my favorite youtubers!

Should you? You don't need to. But think of the things you will learn and the opportunities that can come from being able to say 'I graduated film school'. I've seen lots of people who did and didn't attend film school get gigs in all sorts of places. I can say that the ones with film school on their resume, got those gigs faster and easier.

Take into account that the first year will go to waste as you will learn nothing new because if you watch this guy's videos you already know some things, from that first year you could use the money to purchase a nice camera.

if I break it down, 23k for 3 yrs of "learning" in film school would be 7666€ so thats a 1DX Mkll with a semi good lens if I am right. These prices for "special education in filming" are so unrealistic

Its not worth it. I go to Filmschool atm and gonna quit. Its mostly a waste of time and money. Just spend the 3 years for portfolio and try to spend as much time as you can in video and you will be fine. Just work harder then all the other people!

I am probably not the person you wanted to reply to your comment but I feel like if you want to be a filmmaker and you're going animation right now, the animation aspect that you're learning now will become useful in a part of your filmmaking. Just like Steve Jobs took a calligraphy class and it later influenced his design, or how a lot of painters study music and let that influence them.

hey man I was literally thinking this in my car the other day, try to change your youtube name to JUST your first name "mattih" not the last name as no offence but it's too complicated, and then keep your brand "travel feels" being the website and youtube/youtube intro etc. Basically meaning, the channel name is MATTIH but your brand is TRAVEL FEELS! I did the exact same recently with my channel so i am empathetic and can relate! just some thoughts, love the work and keep doing you man!
