My uncle was a pharmacist but he killed himself in 2018. In his note he said he felt like a glorified Amazon worker. He had tons of other issues too though, so not trying to scare people away sorry. It's just not for some people. He hated being in doors everyday and probably would have been a lot happier being a park ranger or a wilderness guide or something. There's certainly people who find the field incredibly stimulating and there is a lot more to the job than just filling bottles, but like anything you have to be passionate about it for me to recommend something to someone. I certainly wouldn't go to pharm school just because it pays pretty well, money is the last thing you should look at when deciding what field to go into. My uncle had kids young and sort of felt trapped in his job to support his family as switching fields with 4 kids to feed and going back to making $40K was just not feasible. I'm 31 by the way, his kids were all grown and out of the house when this happened, so don't think he left behind his wife with a bunch of babies. I really felt for him when I read his note, RIP Teddy.

Ahh I see your dilemma...Pharmacists can have a major impact in peoples lives, and now, pharmacists are really stepping up to vaccinate the country! If you want to go to school for it, you should give it a shot. The nice thing about pharmacy school is that if you do 1 or 2 years, you can always switch out because the classes you are taking in the first 2 years are mostly pre-reqs that can be applied to other STEM paths if that's your interest!

Thank you for all the explanations in your video. You explained very well and shortly the careers paths after pharmacy school. I study in France and being an african immigrant (from Cameroon 🙂) I understand what other immigrants in the world go trough. I also think it's important to help our comunities. Obviously in France our education system is very different from the american one. Here in university, there is no real cost because they are so low that every student can afford it. We could say that university and public schools are free in France. So there is no debt after the 6 years of pharmacy school in France . And the field is not as saturated as it is in the US or in UK. I think it's the way you use your degree that will determine the outcomes so if you really want to do pharm school don't be discouraged guys. 😁

Even though retail pharmacy is dying because of online pharmacy delivery services - these online pharmacies still need pharmacists to approve of scripts anyway. The only issue is the over-saturation (which is happening in the UK as well) which affects pharmacist pay other than that it’s very hard to see how pharmacists wouldn’t be needed in the future
@MrLuffy91313 жыл бұрын
If online pharmacies take over there would be even less need due to one online pharmacy supplying a big part of the country. I know this isn't related but there was some Optometry place doing the PHOROPTER (the 1 vs 2) over video call and the photoropter was moving via machine and the doctor wasn't even present in the room which makes me wonder if other professions are also dying because of online service

One popular role for pharmacists in hospitals are quality control monitors that oversee pharma techs compounding customized doses for patients. They just installed a machine that fills the most popular sized syringes. Those don't need a pharmacist check . It's a race for the hospital to install machines and lower pharmacy labor costs.

Disclaimer: long comment Honestly i can relate to your parents and relatives, my dad is a pharmacist and he loves his job. Our minds work pretty much the same so my parents want me to be a pharmacist. I totally understand their insistence because im a girl and they want me to have a stable job. I got interest into chemistry, biology etc but I think my real passion is math. I still have doubts with pharmacy because I literally ‘ hate’ memorizing and opening a pharmacy store is getting harder in my country and i never wanted to do something monotonous for the rest of my life. So working in a company makes more sense to me. But one day (like months ago) I learned that there’s something called software engineering and I searched for it. The thing is, I really liked it even tho i got coding classes on 10th grade and i wasn’t good at it because I didn’t actually understood how it needed math. checked some interview questions and it seemed fun because it had math :’) Now I believe that i can enjoy writing codes instead of trying to memorize pharmacology, botanic etc.now im between getting into pharmacy school and preparing a PowerPoint presentation about ‘why should i be a software engineer’ to my parents. Your video truly helped me a lot, thank you so much for letting people who has doubts like me. Appreciate it.

Wow, thank you for sharing! I can understand your predicament. To be honest, it's even harder for me to suggest pharmacy school oversees because I just know so little about it. I actually did some coding certifications recently because of an interest in blockchain I have. I realized that if I had done coding at the same time I was learning math in highschool, it would have been perfect because I see so many similarities in thought process. That's so funny you are considering creating a powerpoint presentation because I actually did that for my parents when it had to do with buying a car LOL. I'm happy to have helped! Honestly, I really think if your passion is software engineering, you should pursue it because it's only going to get more and more relevant as technology advances!

Lol 23 and concerned about your age? I went to pharm school at the age of 30. Had my prerequisites done 15 years earlier but never did anything else besides my regular irrelevant job. Then went to pharm school coz I just took the pcat without preparing. I don't even know what I scored on my pcat but I still applied to a pharmacy school and got accepted.. 🤣 pharmacy school for me was tougher than others because I had been out of school for 15 years!!!! But I am grateful that I adapted pretty quickly and took it one day at a time and made it without failing any classes. So don't worry about your age at all. Just go for it if you really wanna do it and yes it may or may not be tough for you but keep at it and you will make it out. Once you get that degree you will forget about all the hardship that you faced in school. I have PTSD from the pharm school but my mind has blocked all the bad feeling that I felt during that time so it's all good and worth it. BTW when I was applying to schools their websites all stated in the requirement section that this and that prerequisite is required and all courses taken within 10 years etc...I still applied and they didn't ask me about any of that

Not a problem! To be honest, pharmacy was pretty tough for me. I thought chemistry was a strength of mine until I got to organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry 😅. You can definitely finish your prereqs for 2 years and head to pharmacy school, but you'd likely have to take your PCAT. One of the benefits of the 6 year programs is that you don't have to take the PCAT (definitely check the requirements of the school though).

@shanemccann64413 жыл бұрын
Just graduated high school last year- I took some AP classes and did well, and did pretty decent overall. I wasn't valedictorian or anything, but I did my best. I got accepted to some state schools, but decided to go to a community college to save money. In any case- no, you don't have to take AP classes. If you do get college credits in high school, as I did, it will simply accelerate your path a bit. Go to class, have fun, get plenty of extracurriculars, and life will be good to you. You are still very young to be thinking about this stuff, so you are way ahead of the curve. You have plenty of time. Getting into pharmacy school depends on your college GPA, not your high school GPA. But building good study habits today will help you in college tomorrow.
@psybin_3 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I can only speak from my experience and I ended up doing a ton of AP classes because I believed that was the way to get accepted into college. I'm just curious though...is there a reason you are interested in pharmacy so early on? If you are only a freshman, I definitely recommend taking a variety of different classes to see what resonates with you. Life is short, do what makes you happy!
@ayeoritset50493 жыл бұрын
You DEFINITELY don’t need AP classes to get into college but that depends on the colleges you want to get into. All colleges are not built the same. colleges will tell you (on their website) what it takes to get into their school and the profile of students they accept so RESEARCH THAT. extracurriculars and leadership roles in your application are very important too and you can make up for avg grades with that.

Disclaimer: a pretty long comment ( The longest I believe😶) Now, I am about to finish my first year of college. I decided to major in English which according to yt seems like a poor decision. Here in Egypt, the grade required to get into a medical field ( medicine, dentistry and pharmacy) is 98% and above. This mark solely depends on the final year of high school which I unfortunately didn’t perform as well as I used to and got 93.6% which can get me into pharmacy at private universities with thousands of pounds. Now, I have read alot about dentistry since middle school and decided that this was what I wanted to do, i thought of pharm d as an alternative opinion in case my marks didn’t aid me. Now put into consideration I HATE organic chemistry and it was the subject that significantly reduced my mark in highschool although I was pretty good at it. After the mark, I was traumatized i was unable to make a decision but had to make one nonetheless within a month. Kept juggling between diff colleges which I cared an didn’t care about trying to find something. Mom insisted that I apply in pharm d as i am a hardworker. She knew what I was capable of. I, on the other hand, was frightened of the subjects, the idea of not being good enough, failing and the absurdly high prices. Now, after spending hours commuting between my home and college, meeting new people that I hate and disliking my university, i am unaware of i want to do. I have searched everything. I am just tired and numb. Maybe it’s bec i am closed off and introverted. I don’t enjoy new settings and ppl. I am easily overwhelmed. But at this point, i am lost. What would your advice be? To just go for it and apply for pharm although this would mean wasting this year’s time and money? Or just move on with my major and just get over the dreams that the ppl, my family and i put on me based on the fact that I am a hardworker and “smart” ( which i am not)? The problem is that although my grades are high rn, i can’t seem to stop thinking about an alternate universe where i actually get into a medical field.
