Nice video 👌 My brother did a 6 months bootcamp to learn HTML/CSS/JS and React. They did 1 week of JS and then use React for everything. Today, he buy a Udemy course on JS and the fundamentals because he fail job tests. I taught myself JS before React and it helped me a lot to find a job 👍. We are French, so it can. be different in each country And the sound is not sync to the video 😅

That’s a great point of view Lee, a lot of developers get confused asking themselves what’s the best way to learn something, but software development it’s quite different from how you learn in others careers.

If you don't learn JS first, you are shooting yourself in the foot for the future. React is built on JS, just like Vue, Angular etc. There's no reason why something better than React will come along in the near future (and it probably will). You are going to have to learn JS at some point, that is a fact. Learning JS first is future-proofing, learning a library first is just adding technical debt to yourself.

So how much JS before React?

I started with React directly (because of a course) and I always suggest starting with javascript fundamentals, because if you don't bail out till the end, then you're ready to actually jump into react.

Thank you for your unbiased opinions and advice, it really helped me reflect and think about how I need to learn and what is best for me.

aye? is it possible to learn both javascript and react at the same time? i thought react is a subset of javascript and should learn javascript first

I think if you actually want to land a job you need to understand the fundamentals of a language. So for what I've seen of react that means learning the basics of javascript, html, and object oriented programming. But if you just want to dive right in there's nothing stopping you. It might mean you may move a bit slower though. So do what you want with that information.

It’s cool especially if you specifically want to be a react developer. You can learn vanilla JavaScript slowly. But you still learn JS either way

Well, Lee, thanks for the short video - i guess i'll stick to some online JS learning, and next some of React to fully get the picture :)

Will react replace jquery
@carolinacordero66163 жыл бұрын
Yes it will, actually once you start using a JS framework or library like React, Angular or Vue, you can go without jQuery, it's not needed anymore
@mecode78503 жыл бұрын
Modern js already replaced it

Great video Lee. I am glad you actually think like this, I must admit that is quite a fresh take. I love to learn by doing, some times bugs give me a reason to learn a new thing 😂 Even tho I think when you do not understand the fundamentals it is going to cause serious problems if not only performance wise also for people who are going to work later on that project. You can get caught on when having many issues and learning how to just make it work, but often I find me self skipping to truly understand and feel bad about it. I guess at the end of the day we can't be perfect, I personally try to refactor my code once it is actually working as I intended to. Also I do ask my friends or colleagues what would be your take on this or how would you resolve this just a concept or idea. Nonetheless keep up the great work ✌️

Great points! But still.. how can you learn React without JavaScript, I don't get that. It is JavaScript. If you know JS, you can learn React in a day, the documentation is short and on point.

Old style "traditional” devs who lol say stupid shit like should you learn before you play soccer or a sport” 😂 that’s how you def know they are old school. There is no way of correctly especially from opinionated devs. Because let’s be honest for this.. their opinions don’t matter at all. Do what you think is better for your progress and do that up to you. Like I said no right or wrong way 🤷🏻♂️
