A brief interview I did with Dr. Barbara Oakley. Dr. Oakley created the most popular MOOC (Massively Open Online Course) of all time, Learning How to Learn. She is the author of A Mind for Numbers and, more recently, Mindshift.

@OneManArmy Yeah, me too. Works great with solving math problems. Too many people in my home making random noises, music without lyrics helps blocks it out.

Some people say its better to retain information if it takes more effort to learn it!
@谢安-k6t
@谢安-k6t 7 жыл бұрын
That's true, but I believe it is the effort to process the information rather than dealing with language. A teacher who express the knowledge very unclearly can significantly increase the effort but obviously result in less information retained.

In my experience, it depends on the music. I find techno on a low level, or ADHD music (search KZbin), very helpful.

Studying with music doesn't work at all for me because I get involved with it and learning concentration flies away. In the other hand, boring or mechanic activities as text and web editing or even creative activities as drawing are improved by music for the exactly same reason - some part of my brain flies away and takes anxiety and other thoughts with it and so I can keep doing that activity for a long, long time without feeling bored or tired.

I can't listen to music with lyrics or any type of vocals. It's really distracting. I try to listen to some sort of trance or electro music with low volume which really helps but if at any point it sounds like someone is trying to say something my brain automatically shifts my attention to try and figure out what is being said. Beethoven works good. even though that helps I find that after a while even that gets in the way. I could see why sometimes listening to music could get in the way while other times it's helpful. Some people are capable of doing more than one task simultaneously but those tasks that can be overlapped are different for everybody. I don't know if I'm explaining it good so to get a better understanding of what I'm trying to say listen to what Richard Feynman starts saying from 2 min and 20 seconds into this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZuXqmN7itGIY7s
