To me, the main difference is you no longer have anyone in the household to blame for something. Yes, you have to do the dishes. And if you are disgusted by it, it's on you. Adulthood +self sufficiency = Freedom

I strongly feel that Parents need to teach their Children responsibility at a young age. It will serve them well in the future. When they hit 16 teach them how to do their laundry, cooking, cleaning, keep a Room clean and when they protest, just say "Well what are you going to do when you are at College, I'm not going to be there and neither will your Father., you want to be treated like an Adult, then act like one also your future Roommate isn't going to up with your whining and excuses!"

Amen! I have yet to hear a story about meet someone who had a Roommate and didn't have problems. You aren't on the same page about anything. You're Sally Sunshine and they may be Grumpy, you're neat and they are sloppy, they will have Friends pop in and have no respect for you and eat the food that 'you' bought. Then they ask you to pay their Share of the Rent, and they will take care of you and what happens, when it's time to Pay back they hem and haw and get very self defensive. It's better to live on your own because you only have to be responsible for yourself. I've heard of Roommate Drama nd the stories I hear are so heartbreaking. Also keep in mind they will not be on the same page as you in terms of Money Management. They will go out and buy all kind of expensive stuff but not have their share of The Rent. Also in terms of cleaning, it's a bear but trust me if you don't learn to do it growing up at home it's going to be very hard.

I've recently went from living with my parents my whole life(I am 24 years old), to getting a job, moving to a different state and living by myself, and I must say that I identify with everything you said about everything. I already had two friends that live here, but I could not hang out with them every weekend, especially because one is married and the other is dating someone else. So I have been joining meetups and going out by myself to try and make friends. I've probably been out more times now then when I lived with my mom, because I don't feel like I have to tell anyone what I'm doing! Like you said, you can do whatever the fuck you want! Despite how much I am like living alone, I have been struggling to keep up with chores, my 9 to 5, exercising, a startup project I am making, and improving my social/dating skills, I felt like I was the only person struggling to get his shit together. But you just showed me that I am not! Thank you for that :)

From a male perspective. I have lived alone for 8 years now. I was married with kids. At first it was really tough emotionally after the divorce but now I prefer my freedom and independence, not having to justify or compromise what I do and time for myself. I have a dog that keeps me company and I've always been a bit of a loner . I would like to have a close circle of friends that call round, like I had in a shared house that keeps me social but were I can close the front door when I want. I miss the cuddles & bed Olympics although that fades overtime but for me the pros of living alone outweigh the cons. Problem is society treats single people like there a bit weird or sad.

I like your video a lot. It gives me things to think about. I hate country music so much it nearly sends me into a rage, so it forces me to consider the tastes that my roommates would have. Right now, I’m considering living with a cousin who likes DETROIT rap (which I also hate). I’m already pretty quiet and never realized I can become even more isolated living alone. Maybe I’ll become a loner. The part about talking to yourself kind of worries me too. But the freedom!

Thanks for the video. I'm on the fence of renewing my lease or renting a room at my close friend's house. I genuinely love living alone & having that peace. It's nice not having to negotiate or compromise really. But like you mentioned, the extra amount of $ in rent, labor/chores adds up & is very tiring to me. I'm also trying to pay off debt & I know my timeline is much longer doing that while living alone. If your long term goal is to save $ & eventually have more freedom & mobility like myself, then roommates is the way to go. If you make a high enough wage to consistently save a good chunk of your income, & you love living alone, then go for it. I think once you hit your 30's you gotta ask yourself what kind of life you want moving forward & what you're willing to sacrifice to get there.

Spontaneous sex is a plus. Can throw my clothes wherever. Very lonely feeling. Learning to cook for one. Lots of small shopping trips because I don't drive. Social life was mostly online. I would need to leave to get a social life because I had almost no guests. Pets weren't allowed. I could have used a cat...or twenty at this point. I had to work A LOT to keep up with everything financially. Had lots of fantasies of having a live in long term relationship.

Now when I'm 36 and I lived alone in an apartment building for 8 years, since 2011 I can relate to many things you've said. However, I didn't choose to live alone, not entirely free choice. Over time it felt great at first l, but then I got clinical depression and was prescribed medication. I'm off it now. Without the help of the pills. I left my roommate because I saw her true colors when our coworker expressed emotional pain. She was SO insensitive. My coworker (let's call him Paul) is on the spectrum and doesn't really have a great filter. He's said some ✌"inappropriate"✌ things, but never intentionally. He's actually a really conscientious guy. He just makes mistakes in social situations, that's all. I think most of the crew have been a bit unfair to him. Even exclusive. They're college students and they have fun with each other, but they don't really include him in. They have shown some signs of annoyance or "dislike" (I say loosely) toward him. And then one day, I overheard the chef speaking firmly with Paul, not knowing I was nearby. She told Paul--who was always outgoing and tactile at work--that he shouldn't touch coworkers anymore and that he can only talk about work or school. Paul _never_ meant to discomfort anyone. He expressed his pain to me and my ex-roommate; said he hated discomforting and/or hurting people, and perhaps even himself at this point. He even cried a bit. Now, I had lost my voice, so I couldn't say anything to make him feel better; the best I could do was pat his shoulder. I noticed my ex-roommate staring emotionlessly at him...as if she didn't care. I gestured toward him when he wasn't looking, and mouthed "say something," and she mouthed, "Like what?" When Paul left, I confronted my roommate (who happened to be able to read lips) for not trying to make a hurting Paul feel better. She said, "Well, what was I supposed to tell him? That it isn't true? That he isn't a problem in social situations? That he hasn't said stupid things to make a bad impression on people? On my first day at his job, he actually talked about a man's right to hit women for self-defense. That is an inappropriate and disturbing thing to say, especially at work. Crying or not, I'm not gonna lie to make him feel better. Everything he said was actually right. The truth is the truth. That's all he was crying over. I can't ease his pain from *_that._* He has no excuse for his inappropriate behavior and filter issues. He needs to work on it. So by all means, tell me what I was supposed to say to him, because the hard truth was all there was." And _that_ is why I moved out of the apartment, temporarily moved back in with my parents, and got a new place to myself. The truth is not always worth it, and neither is being right.
