Unfortunately, it was the Canadian dream that destroyed my financial situation and my health at the same time. I had to accept jobs that I would not have accepted in my country, just because I hoped that after obtaining permanent residency my life would be easier. Unfortunately, it was not like that. But as for any other strong desire, I didn't want to give up easily. I sold the apartment I had in my country, in order to have enough money in Canada... believing that I will find a good job and that my financial situation will be stable. Unfortunately, I made the biggest mistake...I lost my home because of an irrational dream. Life is very expensive in Canada, rent eats up most of your money. The working conditions are at the level of those in Europe, 20 years ago. I had a job where I couldn't even go to the bathroom because it was a lot of work and the breaks were too short. As an employee, you have very few rights in Canada... you can be fired anytime and anyway. Vacation leave is just a joke. How could an immigrant who misses family and friends manage with 10 days a year? Considering that just to fly to Europe you need 2 days. In addition, salaries are very low (except for some professions). I tried several provinces, hoping that it is better in other places, unfortunately there are problems everywhere. I lived in NB, ON and AB...probably NB would be the place where I would live again. Then there is the problem of drugs and homeless people...many areas have proven to be unsafe. In Europe, I didn't really have this feeling wherever I went. Another problem is public transport, a nightmare for any person used to using public transport in Europe. Yes, Canada is not bad in every way. I miss the wide spaces, the beautiful nature, the ocean, some people (especially the elderly), the lack of bureaucracy, business opportunities (if you have the money to start one), Costco, etc. But unfortunately it has become very difficult to survive as an immigrant there (if you don't come from rich families that can support you financially). After all my money was gone (especially the rent in Toronto, $2000 per month) I had to return to Europe. I'm not sorry that I had this experience, and I would like to live in Canada, if life were cheaper...I'm only sorry that I lost my beautiful apartment.

@@AlinaMcleod Thank you! Canada really was a big dream for me, and after a few visa refusals for stupid reasons (like you applied online and you had to apply on paper, this after even their customer support said I can apply online) I tried my best to live there. Unfortunately, I did not expect it to be so difficult to have your work experience outside of Canada or your studies in other countries recognized. Basically you have to start from scratch with everything. I will not understand why Canada wants so many immigrants but cannot offer them good jobs and a decent living.

@@florinRS11 I cannot agree more with you, this is exactly how it is like in Canada. I could be wrong, but I have a very strong feeling that there is a lot of propaganda involved with the “Canadian dream”… anyways… I also had a wonderful time in Canada, I do not regret any single step I took, but I am now also leaving for the same issue you faced. I have lived here all my life in Canada. Back in the 90s it was still a realistic dream. But its become a disappointment. Even people who grew up here and were born in the 80s and 90s still cant afford a home or to have kids. Don't be fooled into coming here, the biggest issues are cost of living, lack of affordable housing for rent or to purchase, public transportation is a joke here, the healthcare system is free but quite poor, taxes are insanely high, most jobs outside of hard labor, trades and white collar dont pay a living wage. As a result there is a lot of drugs and crime here. Almost everywhere you go theres a lot of these issues in the cities and even some towns. Its very sad. Most people need 2 jobs and then skip meals or live in a cold house with heat turned down to cut costs. Its miserable. Winter can last 6 to 9 months here and it is much colder than an average european winter with a lot of snow making driving very depressing and stressful. During winter public transportation is quite unreliable as it can take much longer to get anywhere. If you come here from another country your education will not be recognized so you will be forced to compete for a low level starter job and get paid a low wage. Also if you want a tight knit community to be a part of, its not a common thing in Canada. There isn't really a sense of community. People are nice and polite but they aren't kind, real or engaging. Theres a very weird thing here where people stick to their own social circles and silently judge everyone else from afar. Its very strange an cut off. Don't come here. This country is depressing to live in. If it were less difficult for Canadians to emigrate to the USA I would go there in a heartbeat. But truth is, its not that easy for canadians to go to the US unless they work at a high level in certain fields or are a wealthy business owner, or marry someone who has US citizenship. I am almost 40 and have nothing to show for it despite working my whole life. Most other people my age either live with their parents, or their parents bought them a house or they are lucky enough to make over 100k/year and can still sort of afford to live a normal life. But truth is most Canadians born here are struggling if they arent rich. I cannot even imagine the harships immigrants would face here. I wouldnt wish this on anyone. So if you have this dream of going to Canada, my advice is to think long and hard about it because there is a lot of problems with this country nowadays.

you just don't know how to get a good job. in Canada, it is very easy to get jobs that easily pay you living costs plus extra to save. not many countries can compare with the opportunites. yes, you may need to move to another province, but Canada is still by far, one of the best coutnries to live in to find jobs and earn lots of money.

@JalomMatia Do you even live in Canada. Even minimum wage jobs are having hundreds of people lined up waiting to interview all just for one position. Face it, Canada is done and is not the paradise that you think it is.

@JalomMatia Yes, there are jobs in Canada that pay extremely well; however, there’s a huge price to be paid for that job, as they are always located far from civilization. The purpose of working/making good money is to enjoy your life. I’ve lived in small northern communities, making lots of money, but my life was pure shit, as apart from work, there was nothing to do. The winters are tortuously long, and the summers pass so quickly that their presence is almost meaningless. If you move closer to a populated centre, your options diminish, and your ability to make money goes to zero, unless you’re in the upper 10% of income earners.

Everything Alina is saying in this video is factual. It's much harder for new immigrants to get established in Canada than it was, say, 20-30 years ago. My grandparents, who were in the late 50s, came here in 1990 with very little money, and six years later they already bought a house. That would be nearly impossible nowadays. Canada only makes sense if you're entrepreneurially minded.

I'll also add that in the 80s and 90s were the golden age to make cash money, it's when labour cost has not sky rocket like crazy and able to pay cheap labour to staff. Also the time when credit cards and e-commerce has not taking over yet. Immigrants and refugees coming here now in the 2020s and forward doing UberEATS, amazon, instacart. I mean seriously good luck to them. The Chinese were kings at making cash in restaurants and businesses and a lot of them have very low pensions due to these type of jobs back then. But aleast they have a house to live in. Sorry but in Canada, if you not prepared to lose your career back home and start over, don't bother coming here. It's literally rigged. All the rich Chinese and indians right now are also buying all franchises, commercial real estate, investing in housing cause back home, that's all they did, also in Chinese/asian culture we work faster and also try to save every penny. Car dealerships that are owned by white people will hire mandarin speakers cause they can make a quick sales to Chinese people with money

I came to Canada from France with a working holiday visa. I am fully bilingual (even trilingual), but life here is not what I was expecting when I made my baby steps in Canada. I have gone through a lot of expensive milestones to get my permanent residency, but I do regret a lot since I have spent a lot of money instead of focusing on my own priorities. However, it was an eye-opening experience to discover what my priorities are. I feel miserable here since all I do is work, pay my rent, groceries and taxes. I do not have any energy or money for hobbies and meeting new people. Loneliness and being far from family doesn't help. I think about going back to France and not coming back (or only if I realize it's definetly worse back home). It's always hard to choose between two evils. I truly understand that Canada needs young skilled workers to help their economy, but in my opinion, the human aspect was destroyed by the pandemic. Homelessness, the opioid crisis, rents and the high cost of living are just real major problems for the normal individual and immigrant. Also, everything costs a lot when you want to travel compared to Europe. You basically need to have a car to try to have fun around cities like Ottawa. It's really hard for newcomers to be part of Canada since every community only stick by themselves. The loneliness, the lack of true friendships, the distance with family will make me go back to France even though France has its own problems. It's not necessarily better, but when it comes to spend time with childhood friends and family, it's a no brainer for me. It's hard to choose betwen two evils, but personal priorities just matter a lot for a life choice like this. Immigration is not a joke and can be soul-crushing. I really miss my family, childhood friends and good food. It's awful to be isolated for an extended period of time when your only social interaction is the cashier at the grocery store.

Great vid, Alina. You missed one huge, huge thing about living in Toronto especially: access to healthcare. It is severely deteriorating. It has been like this for a good 7-10 years and has gradually gotten worse and worse. New immigrants will face an impossible task of trying to find a family doctor - no one is accepting new patients. Secondly, seeing a specialist. The wait times are getting longer and longer and will absolutely get even worse the more people come.

Moved to Mexico last year. Talked to Canadians that have returned since and they are shocked at what had happened in a few months. All of a sudden there is a Canadian run on Mexican residencies. While it can be cheaper in Mexico it really depends on how you want to live as to how much cheaper it might be.

@@asadb1990 Mexico is not really a poor country anymore. More and more Mexicans are joining the middle class or becoming wealthy. It's a sleeping giant. The economy is growing. Most people who move from Canada/USA/Europe..etc work remotely or have some kind of online business. There are also many who open businesses in Mexico. It's much more affordable than Canada but it's not as cheap as it used to be as the peso gets stronger and the country becomes even more developed. There is a lot of wealth leaving countries like Canada and moving to Mexico. I would not recommend Mexico unless you come with money or have a remote job/business or pension. Also, if you are only looking for cheap living then don't do it.

The problem with Greece and the rest of the EU is the USA is exporting its brand of crony capitalism there, and the social services net will deteriorate as the EU is forced to spend more and more of its GDP on military hardware. There are tens of thousands of lobbyists infesting Brussels - soon, the EU will be 100% run for corporate interests, just like the USA is...and just like the in USA, the regular citizens can go to hell.

Thanks for sharing this video that it’s a real witness of the situation that is happening in Canada currently. I had this dream to expatriate there since 2018 but for personal reasons and COVID period we had to postpone it till this year. Coming from Paris, I believe that is a very expensive city among the largest capitals in the world, but arriving in Montreal I was shocked how prices are high! the rent for 1 bed room in a decent place is around 1700$/month and grocery is away expensive… we spent a lot of money to move there and we could stand only 3 weeks we couldn’t see a better future and lifestyle standing as we expected so we just move back .fortunately we didn’t take the risk to sell our house here we were very careful to not being too risky at that level! I’m sure that the nature in Canada is stunning the few things I noticed that is not too crowded and it has large spaces but it isn’t enough to retain you… we’re taking about settling down and building a new life. So the outcome of the investment wasn’t positive for us. Besides the cost of living, the safety and poverty is an issue as well coz of homeless people and drug-addict too. Even in the capital OTTAWA they were everywhere 😮 as for the education, actually there are a lot teachers vacancies for primary schools and they can’t assure a place for new comers ! so you need to ask for a private school if you don’t apply at the right time for registration ( at the beginning of each school year). I’m disappointed regarding my journey but happy to be back home. Europe has a lot to offer besides some problems you have a smooth lifestyle. Just to mention Spain for me is the best place to be /to live for the quality of living that offers just you need to find a good job well paid to enjoy it fully. Good luck for new comers! Maybe it’s gonna change in the near future but nowadays no need to motivate and attract new immigrants if you don’t offer good conditions to make them stable in a new country.

Tbh the only city worth living in here is Montreal. It’s affordable, it’s fun, it’s safe, it’s walkable and convenient, it has a perfect city/nature blend, and it’s still very cosmopolitan too. With that said, living in Montreal is best if you’re either self employed, a digital business owner, or employed with a Toronto salary otherwise salaries are lower, taxes are higher, and you would need to learn French. Toronto/Vancouver are the biggest offenders in this countries’ cost of living, Ottawa is too boring imo, Quebec City is a bit too French (in the nicest way possible lol), and the Prairies I don’t think I’d enjoy living in for whatever reason.

The Housing Crisis is becoming more and more of a deepening Social, Economic, Political, and Security Crisis for Canada. Asset Bubbles created by the Bank of Canada over the past 20 years are bursting and turning into a National Crisis with ; - Runaway Inflation - Record Level Household Debt ($2.32 Trillion) - Record Level High Real Estate Prices - High Cost of Living - And the Surging Cost of Rents, Food, Fuel, Goods, Services, and Taxes. The TRUE Inflation rate in Canada is over 15%, the main reason the cost of living is not dropping anytime soon. 50% to 75% Assets DEFLATION in Canada is long overdue and is a MUST, if not, there will be Serious and Devastating Impacts for the middle class for years to come. Given these circumstances, Canada needs DEFLATION and not Inflation at the moment. The rate hike must continue in order to DEFLATE the asset bubbles. The Bank of Canada has deceived and misled the country and people into this deep mess with NO END in sight in the near future.

However, the PR application didn't pan out, and at the back of my mind, while being placed on this backburner, I was wondering if it was not a blessing in disguise......Many Canadians, whether of English Canadian or Asian Canadian extraction, keep on telling me that the costs of living have skyrocketed to the point of being unrecognisable from the time I was a graduate student there from 2006-2010, and even in 2013, when I made a short visit to Vancouver for a week, it wasn't so bad. Investment in airbnb another reason for decrease in available properties available on the market . It is a supply and demand problem and the lack of governments from stopping such practices in thoae places. My view is inflation experienced since 2020 (likely before as well) has nothing to do with supply/demand and is all manufactured. Primarily by regulated controls that get enforced upon everything. Australia is similar to Canada and likely even more expensive. The motivation is for finding places that offer a more simplified way of living that do not rely upon high powered professions to pay for these manufactured cost grabs by Corporations and Government. You have been to a few of these places like Bulgaria, Russia, Greece. South Africa is also cheap but may pose danger for foreigners.

@@manitbaacy3413 I don’t know actually. From my view, immigrants have it pretty hard especially if you are Asian decent. You mentioned you are coming from Africa. You can apply for skilled labour immigration. I think that’s the best. As Canada’s work force is lacking in these areas. You will be appreciated a lot more and be paid well to do your job. I know some countries may have tribal issues in Africa and people may choose to come to Canada as refugees. I would say the paper work will take a long time and there are pros and cons this way. Once you are processed, as a minority of war torn or political issues you will stand out. And get employed easier. However when it comes to most refugees it’s the cultural differences and lack of food and community. If you know anyone in Canada that has an opportunity for you and is willing to sponsor you, go for it. However don’t go for big cities if you don’t have to. Expenses here are insane. If you have a good job in Africa, I don’t see leaving would be a good idea. Remember this, in Canada right now basic food and housing is the highest expense. Most people live in rooms. You may have higher pay here but you most likely won’t have any spare money. I do not wish for you to experience the same thing. A lot of immigrants are leaving. But housing has not gone done in price. That’s all I can recommend.

As a resident of MTL but originally from Quebec city, I can easily say that average rents and home values are not representative of the current status. Homes in the core of the city are +1m$ this overvalue, increase the average as they only represent 25% of the total. 30 min from the city centre are on avg 450k but 1hr away they drop significantly to 300k. My home town (QC city) the prices are quite similar (excluding the older quarters of the city) to those found east of Ottawa (Casselman, st-isodore and such) at 350k and that's within a 20-40 min distance from the city centre😅

Waiting to see if you can ever find a country that is relatively safe, cheap, has good and inexpensive healthcare system and accepts foreigners to live long term. Not that I am interested but everyone's favourite destination Thailand seems to have a really complex requirements in order to obtain visa for long term stay. The world is in total chaos and everyone thinks there is still a safe and happy place you can run away to. Canada has changed so much for the worse in the last 20 years but seems it is the same story everywhere.

Yeah grass always greener apparently. It all depends on what people want in life. We have seen many people who make do with much less and some who cannot make do with more. If some people consider it bad now, those who left 20 years ago must have been really special to have failed here. Canada has certainly declined much like more Western countries.

Calgary has become soooo expensive. Not "budget friendly" anymore. We're experiencing the same affordability crises and housing shortage in the sub $2000/month rentals. I'm worried about 2024 here. I feel like ppl just have to pick one city until it's ruined with unaffordable housing and then move to the next city and create an affordability crisis there. Also most ppl are ready for a real Alberta winter. Our winters are long. But overall it sucks seeing ppl suffering here after the "Alberta is Calling" campaign. It's nice seeing new people from other places but it's getting really expensive :( Also Alberta does not have rent control so a lot of ppl are seeing their rents for one or two bed apartments jump by $100 to $1200 per month. It's crazy.

I have been living in Montreal for 8 years, and personally, my situation is quite good, mainly because I brought enough savings from my home country to practically take a mortgage immediately, investing a lot in the down payment. I also have a good job. However, I plan to leave here in the next year or two. The main reasons include the unavailability of preventive healthcare; too high taxes for the government services we have; expensive, not healthy and low-quality food products with a limited choice; exorbitant prices for flights anywhere; underdeveloped, inconvenient, and expensive public transportation; very poor road quality and infrastructure, a lackluster social life, and difficulties in making acquaintances and friends. We have only one life to live it so boring way.

We visited Montreal & Quebec City (from the states) last fall & loved it. Was surprised how (relatively) affordable 2-3 bdr condos were. Then I looked into it more & found the reason: immigration language barriers. You need to *all* speak at least basic French. If you need a job you need to be conversational in French & your kids need to be fluent enough to attend school in French (unless you can afford private?). It's easier for Canadian citizens (they're given more leeway on the language) to move there but not by much. I'm 100% willing to learn French but it seems you need to be fluent before even applying which is a no-go for most people.

I am Canadian, born and raised in southern Ontario. After living and working in China, Singapore, and Japan for a decade, I returned to Canada 2 years ago and found a country in which living a quality life is very difficult due to the very high cost of living. For me, there is only one option: to leave Canada and simply not return. In any city in Canada is to be surrounded by drug addicts, and people in a state of displacement, and to that we add the large number of people with mental disorders on the streets, these are factors that in my opinion are social diseases that over time have become a social cancer.

I lived in Winnipeg for a year and that’s a city I wouldn’t want to live in again. Visit yes. Also I think if you own something before everything went up in cost then your at a little more advantage. Also we are planning on spending our winters in the Philippines or maybe a different city in another country not sure yet but once the weather nice we will be back on the farm. As for Saskatchewan cities I prefer Saskatoon or Regina. There is just so much more to do in Saskatoon and the city has a different kind of vib. Anyway come visit us in the Philippines or the farm.

Canada is really very expensive, but I think that in western countries in general life is more expensive than elsewhere. In Italy the cost of living is high especially in the north of the country where renting an apartment is a business. On the other hand, in small towns or villages it is cheaper. Fortunately in Italy most people own their own homes. However, many Italian retirees emigrate to cheaper countries!! Here too we have many problems!!.
