Dear Jessa, I came to the comments section only to express my admiration to you. Your explanations are so clear, you're incredibly charmful, completely skillful, and I just love how didáctic and calm you are. Zero arrogance, very mature and an absolutely lovely personality. I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but at least this video of yours contributes against a true sad era of impersonalization through brief and reductionist tutorials about almost anything in KZbin. I mean, the extension of your videos, your naturalness and your charm gives a very pleasant, human vibe. I felt like it was a personal advice tutorial video, not just a generic, synthetized, step-by-step, impersonalized video. Your style of teaching is unique, or at least, extremely uncommon in KZbin. My best regards.

Rice worked for me. My iPhone was soaked in water for about 2-5 minutes in sink. It was iPhone plus with a plastic cover. The phone was dead. I was planning to buy a new one at the moment, but my mother immediately put the phone in rice and told me that she rekindled 3 phones before. Honestly, I did not believe her. Guess what, it took less than 10 minutes before my phone went back on itself. There were some problems: the hole for the ear piece was plugged by rice, the speaker phone did not work, the Bluetooth did not awake. But the WiFi and other functions worked. About 2 hours later in rice, speaker phone worked. Next day morning, the Bluetooth came back. Rice works.

Speaking from electronics experience, if you measure across a capacitor for continuity or resistance you may get a reading or a short beep depending on how large the capacity of the capacitor is. Your meter is putting out a small voltage DC to the circuit you are measuring and so any capacitors in the device will take a short time to charge up. Most meters will register a continuity beep up to 30-40 ohms so that cap charging up is going to look like a short for enough time in most cases that the meter will see it as a momentary short. One other thing to add to this is many of the more expensive meters use a latching circuit on the continuity tester for the length of one beep so even if your meter only reads under the 30-40 ohms for a micro-second it will audible as a full beep.

Thanks for this. Just fixed my fiances iPhone X. She dropped in a gutter and it was boot looping. Turned it off. Shook as much water out as I could out the sim card slot. Was going to drop it in a container with dessicant, but saw this. Next morning I picked up a kit from iFixit and opened it up with a hair dryer. Was a bit nervous I'd break something, but everything looked good cept a few potential mineral deposits on MB. Pulled it and soaked in 99.9% alcohol, let it dry.. and like it never happened... Wishing I didn't have to reopen it to replace the seal in 2 days once it comes in the mail, but I think I'll be fine.

Incredible video Jessa. I've worked at Fluke for years and have worked as a technician so I really respect what you are doing here. Honestly a lot of companies got out of board test because of the extreme miniaturization you're dealing with. We had digital testers that probed legs along the IC, we had probes that even probed those original Motorola and Intel CPUs. I'm just fascinated by your videos......being that I'm coming from the test world where we basically threw in the towel on trying to fix devices like you're fixing! By the way, I'll say it again thank you for standing up to Apple. It really infuriates me they ban you from their forums for trying to help their customers. What ever happened to common decency? Ooooooh, it boils the blood.

Only thing what I do different is that I also desolder shield from flex cable on lcd and clean components underneath. Sometimes that can save you LCD. One thing I learned in college was when you use a meter to test a component while it's still in circuit you're testing all components around it in the schematic. You could have a resistor and a capacitor parallel in a circuit. If you test the capacitor it's going to show resistance.

+Jeff Flowers well we do professionally fix iPhone motherboard problems all day every day for phones sent in from all over the world. If you have a short to ground on a line, the multimeter will show low/no resistance to ground on that line as measured at any cap in the circuit.

I remember leaving my Game Boy on the swing and the rain came... I dried it on the heater. Game boy works to this day after that but I know it's probably due to bigger components(corrosion has to be much bigger to make critical damage). I will take it apart and see if I can find any marks of water damage. Just for fun.

You could have put it in a bag of dog biscuits and it would have worked five months later. It dried out! Think about it. If rice is setting in your house at 55% humidity, the rice is at 55% also. Unless it's magic rice, there is no differential for the rice to remove moisture any quicker than the air in your house. Less actually, as there is no air circulation in the bag, and in fact the moisture is trapped in the bag! If you are going to dry it yourself, just set it in an airy spot (the air stream of an air conditioner would be great) with as much of the phone disassembled as you feel safe doing.

Yeah my phone was in a broken lifeproof case underwater for approximately 10 minutes. First thing I did was hit the home button. Phone heated up, probably short circuiting. Dried it when I got home and put it in a container full of silica gel. Set up an appointment at the Apple Store for Sunday. I guess I'll see if it turns on tomorrow or if I'm going to have to get it repaired. Funny thing is that the exact same thing happened to me 2 years ago. Had to buy the early upgrade last time. This time though, I want to get the phone before I go on vacation and am willing to buy a replacement if necessary.

Just a note after reading all these comments... Modern phones still have processors and other chips that generate a lot of heat. That is why they don't seal the boards with silicone rubber, etc. That being said, they could seal the cases much better, at greater cost. They do it with cameras, for example...

For the record...you are taking this very well at 00:42 when telling a story with such a predictable ending (in the back yard no less). Your hubby is very lucky...too lucky. Or buy him a $15 phone, and then explain to hiim that if he wants to go ice-skating with mobile web browsing, then he will need to bring his laptop.

yea problem is opening it up means voiding warranty.. id rather put it in rice and dont turn it on until ive let it with rice for the weekend.. it can prevent water that would eventually damage the board
@JessaJones
@JessaJones 7 жыл бұрын
Opening your phone does not void the warranty, however water damage does void the warranty. If you immediately open a wet phone and disconnect the battery, and dry the phone you can save more phones than if you do nothing (by putting it in rice or anything else). Doing nothing can work sometimes if you're lucky, but often it just allows water droplets to roll across waterproofed surfaces inside the phone and drop down on the logic board causing a short circuit and kills what would have been a repairable phone. It also allows the full battery voltage to expend into logic boards that instantly got a short circuit when water hit the board---essentially electroplating the entire main power line. The takes what was fixable focal damage and turns it into widespread unfixable damage. Rice is ALWAYS a bad idea.

There are a lot of components on the board that have a minor practical function. It is always best to put them back and conform to the original design. Since this is my personal phone I left those off, but if I ever noticed a cell reception deficit or dropped calls I'd put them back.

Some times these components are included in the device so that they don't interfere with other devices. Hypothetically: How would you feel if your device interfered with someones pacemaker giving much pain or even death due to you removing a component? Your suck it and say way of just removing cap's and not replacing them if the phone works is not good practise in the same way as just putting the phone in rice. All the cap's are there for a reason!!!

A phone in a bag of rice just corrodes more due to the moist environment that it's kept in. Instead remove the battery (if it's removable), don't charge it, and run, don't walk to your nearest repair shop!! ;) You gotta love it when customer say "Oh it only dropped in water for just a second!" lol #1 Or the other one "EVERYTHING works perfectly, they just can't hear me." lol #2 Or, "I dried it, and when I plugged it in, it came on for a second then nothing" lol #3 I've had phones which dropped in water for a day, went through the a full laundry cycle and they were perfectly repairable, yet others which "only dropped in water for a second" were simply un-repairable. power phone off, if you can remove batter do so, submerge in isopropyl alcohol, agitate to displace water, allow evaporation. Silica is good after. Silica is standard storage procedure to keep humidity from electronics.

Rice absorbs water. Plain and simple. Best to just throw the phone in the dryer on the ready to wear setting for 10 minutes.

I'm not an Apple owner or fan but I know good advice when I hear it! As you said, 'It's YOUR phone!' no one, including the manufacturer, has the right to tell you what to do with your property. If you have the confidence to attempt to prevent a catastrophic failure of your device, why not? I really don't think ANY manufacturer is going to go to the trouble of inspecting a faulty product for microscopic signs of attempted moisture damage minimisation, especially as the device will already have obvious damage from the moisture ingress. It's just not worth the cost in man hours for them to bother. They probably only ever check that the device is actually faulty and possibly that the moisture indicators have been activated.

While I understand that water is not conductive but the dissolved minerals in the water are, the first thought is to get the phone dry so you can pretend it didn’t happen and maybe it will work again 🙂. While on a several day road trip, my wife dropped her phone in the hotel pool just before we preparing to check out. No plans to come back through the area later. We stopped at a market and, you guessed it, bought a bag of rice. Put in the floor of the backseat for 24hrs and it powered back up. It needed a new battery about six months later and lived another year after that. I realize that’s not a scientific test or proof of anything except we got lucky, but it did happen.

My experiences with liquids on electronics: I've spitted a few drops coke on my new running PC... I immediatly unplugged it and used a hair dryer on the lowest setting with much distance so that the coke isn't moving and just drying out. No problems at all after booting it 30mins later. Then I used a stream of tap water to clean my running Iphone 5. The water got in it and behind the screen (glas had a crack) and in the charging port... Charging/Headphones didn't work for a day. I didn't turn it off and the next day everything was fine. Still no problems today after a year of using it. Then I've washed a mechanical keyboard in the shower. For a week the keys didn't work correct and it got detected / undetected by the PC each minute. Still working fine since 2 years. Then there is my sister who dropped a whole coke from McDonalds on her Ipod. The Coke was flowing out of this poor thing. Damn I was surprised it even lasted some more minutes before its final death.

Do not put your phone in rice! It will not do anything. You should take off case case then let it dry it in sun. Leave it there for 1 day+ to let it dry. The longer let it dry it will more chance to work. Nice video

Is it possible to increase a phones battery capacity even though the original battery is soldered on ? What do you think about brushing on mineral oil on the mobo to reduce future corrosion and act as way to water proofing your phone ?

What do you think of soaking a wet phone in something like isopropyl alcohol (99%, not "rubbing alcohol") to absorb the water and leave clean, easily evaporated alcohol behind which would dry cleanly?

I have a old Nokia phone that I accidentally dropped in the toilet. I left it on the radiator for three days to dry off - watching this seems like that's the worst thing I could have done. It did work again afterwards though - that was three years ago now and I'm still using it lol. Shows just how well made these older phones were.

In the case of relatively clean water/liquid ingress, you don't even need to clean the board, just disconnecting all power quickly enough to prevent electrolysis corrosion from occurring in the first place before setting it out to dry should be enough. Once dried, the residues shouldn't be conductive enough to hinder normal operation. But acting that quickly is easier said than done with devices not designed to have user-replaceable batteries where electrolysis will often have time to eat pads and leech metal quicker than you can open them. Removing power should be the first priority. Once that's done, the rate a which any further damage will occur is drastically reduced.

So I goofed up... My note 9 was in a backpack on top of a kayak and a wave hit it. I figured it was water proof and should be fine. Later to find out after it wasn't working and the water proof glass back was coming off at a corner. I poured bottled water on the bottom where the charging port and audio port are. Went back home and did the rice method... lol. I plugged it in at night about 6 hrs later and was excited to see it charging, then fell asleep. Woke up and of course it was working again because I'm misbelieved it was completely try thinking it was a water proof phone. I took off the glued on back and saw sodium settlements by the charging port. Watching a different video it recommended 91 to 99% iso-alcohol. So I used what I had which was 91% and a que tip to get all of the salt deposits off. I tried taking the battery out and i guess it was glued in there and IT CAUGHT ON FIRE briefly, broke the seal i suppose when i tried to leverage it out. I'm at a loss as what to do now... I cant afford $3000 as to what companies in my area are charging to recover. I dont have a back up battery. wondering if i should still try to take the battery out somehow so i can put a cut usb cable at the terminals for power, (probably a bad idea). I JUST WANT MY VIDEOS AND PICTURES =C

The rice method came about, I imagine, because most people don't have a bag of chemical desiccant, ultrasonic cleaners, those funky tools Apple has created, or the knowledge of how to disassemble their phone and get into the little bits.

I can't tell you how drying out a device - either phone, remote control, key fob etc. in rice has saved me. The truth of the matter is that there are not a lot of "professionals" readily available or affordable (aka- replace this and that etc..). Any method to dry out an electronic device is a good way to help preserve or prevent failure. In my profession, we actually wash electronic boards in a commercial dishwasher and then dry them in a Thermotron to remove the moisture. It works. Very well. I don't have a multi-thousand dollar Thermotron at home but have used rice many times. Phone and tablet manufacturers need to make these devices water proof. THAT is the real solution. People are going to really disagree with me, that's fine. I'm not saying that rice is better than disassembly and proper cleaning but although I live near a large metro area, I have never found anybody who will clean and fix. Everyone wants to replace or repair. Rice is better than nothing. How much do you charge for this service ???

Idk when my iPhone 6S got wet, but it shows all the symptoms of water damage like a gyroskope that doesn‘t always work properly as well as some bright spots on the screen and my SIM card slot looked kinda burnt when I opened it up, it also gets really hot sometimes...but it works fine for almost a year since these symptoms first showed up.
