@Rebecca_English
@Rebecca_English 11 ай бұрын
@marcolinosalgarone9442 It's true that each of our bodies is unique, but we're mostly not that different. We have ribs for a reason. Any amputation (a rib, in my sister's case) is going to result in chronic pain and phantom pain due to unavoidable nerve damage from the surgery. Because her lung lacks the protection and stability of the rib, even 10 years out, it hurts if she moves in certain ways, if she lays down on the amputation site, if she coughs, or if she laughs too hard. The lack of a rib has left her unable to cough properly, so she's at a higher risk for respiratory diseases. The surgery went well without any complications. The symptoms I described are known and expected results of the surgery, not complications. Removing a rib is risky, but in my sister's case, it was better than facing a collapsed lung from the benign tumor.
@S_Carol
@S_Carol 11 ай бұрын
I think this would be a bit different, if only because the ribs bring removed are the floating ones. While the rest of them have a major impact on the lungs (they're literally what keeps our lungs inflated) the floating ones are more like... Spare armour. They do help protect our spleen and liver from sharp impacts somewhat, but one could theoretically be fine without them as long as they're not doing contact or extreme sports? It's still major surgery though. That always carries risks.

@@marcolinosalgarone9442I have had 4 areas of my ribs removed in 5 inch sections for tumors as well, although at first it was very painful, now I only get some bone aching and neuropathy. Some days it hurts really bad, it just depends on what is triggering the pain flare up. I still have a lot of tumors on my chest though, it's hard to tell what the pain is from. It can burn though and for sure result in some nerve damage but I think it depends on the doctor performing the operation as well.

@@serebii666 fat redistribution and facelifts don’t remove important parts of the skeleton designed to protect internal organs-that’s folly. And, I agree-there will always be demand for these services, so it is important to ensure licensed plastic surgeons legally perform the procedures. However, I still admire the ethics of a plastic surgeon who refuses to complete the procedure because it is seriously dangerous to the patient to live without all of the rib cage. It sends a message to irrational patients about the seriousness of the surgery they are requesting. Some would decide against such a surgery when a plastic surgeon declines to perform the procedure to protect the health of the patient. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@american-britchick4003 You wrote " its unethical to remove healthy, X for cosmetic purposes." Voila. " important parts of the skeleton designed to protect internal organs-that’s folly." What do you think the purpose of fat is. "Some would decide against such a surgery when a plastic surgeon declines to perform the procedure to protect the health of the patient" Those who seek to undergo such extreme and expensive surgery are not liable to be discouraged by one refusal. They embark on medical tourism to countries with lax protections, just like the people who seek to inject castor oil or rubber cement. You may personally consider such body modification bizarre and unethical, but I think it is very important that service is still available in the US by rigorously trained medical professionals. There are far more extreme surgeries that are less controversial than this one (like height lengthening surgery, gender affirmation, monsplasties, or polydactyly amputation), let alone amputations of full healthy limbs for Body integrity dysphoria sufferers. And attacking the ethics or integrity of doctors that ultimately exist to counsel patients and help them with their self esteem and wellbeing for providing these services is off-mark for me.

As a psychologist - in my professional opinion it's moving from age maintenance /feel good touch ups to body dysmorphic decisions that could end or endanger your life. When the requested surgery is major and involves general aesthetic and significant skeletal changes - it's concerning. Unless a person is in pain or deformed I would hope they have seen a mental health professional to discover if they have underlying troubles.

Even with a condition that is causing me incredible amounts of pain constantly and with it significantly impacting my quality of life, my surgeon STILL said it was risky in both short and long term outcomes, and made sure I fully grasped that before setting me up for surgery. Obviously everyone has control of their own bodies, but this TikTok from actual medical professionals and their attitude towards it all gives me such red flags 🚩

@@angels4457 Not 12 ribs in total being removed, I can't imagine how awful that would be! Your ribs are numbered 1-12, 1 being the top by your shoulders and 12 being the lowest by your belly button. Your 11th and 12th ribs are "floating" ribs, meaning they only attach to the spine and don't connect to the front sternum area at all. In Rib Tip/12th rib syndrome, the 12th ribs aren't staying where they're supposed to, and the pointy ends poke into nearby nerve groups and cause intense pain. In my case, they're really not doing their job of protecting nearby organ groups anyway, so 12th rib removal was the right course of action for me. My surgeon is breaking it up into 2 separate surgeries because recovery is rough. That's another huge 🚩 against the original surgeon, who decided to remove 6 in one surgery 😬

People, don’t do this and Dr. stay conservative and don’t offer that surgery. Our son had 1” of rib removed to put in spacers in order for cardio-thoracic surgeons to remove part of his lung and debride the lobe they could save from the Valley Fever spores (which was as thick as molasses). He now has chronic post thorocotomy pain syndrome and we take him to UCLA or USC for temporary nerve blocks. He’s too young for a permanent block. Drs said there are nerves attached to each rib and cutting them may cause permanent damage, as in our son’s case.

As an RN I can tell you that removal of ribs is very dangerous. Your ribs protect your thoracic organs, such as the lungs and heart. They also protect your spleen, kidney, pancreas, stomach, & colon. The muscles around the ribs help make your chest cavity bigger for effective lung expansion, which aids in breathing thus decreasing the chances for pneumonia

Confession time: I have short, thick waist, and I’d be lying if I said I’d never thought of having ribs removed. It’s classically feminine to have a nipped in waist - a more hour-glass shape. I can’t wear most trouser styles, belts, non-stretchy waistbands, fitted silhouettes, and so on. When I choose clothes that fit my waist, the hip and butt area are baggy. It looks strange. So, it’s shapeless sack dresses and tunics over stretch pants for me. There is not a pair of jeans I can comfortably wear, unless you count pajama jeans. So, yeah, I’ve wondered if a few less ribs would make me feel more attractive.

In my humble opinion, it’s not worth it. I have the opposite problem - I usually have a 10-12 inch difference between my waist and my chest/hips, and it’s a pain. Shirts hang off my chest and make me a box, so I look 20 pounds heavier than I actually am if I don’t wear tight clothes. I need a belt for all pants because the waist is always huge, and it’s usually uncomfortable because there is SO much extra fabric bunched up under the belt. I guess my point is that everything has downsides, even the “ideal” hourglass shape
