Great info. I seeded in the fall and will take your advice on avoiding preemergent for the year and just do spot. We’ve had a lot of crab grass and clover issues last year but I’m thinking about just managing that until the roots grow in. Also since I’m not doing preemergent should I overseed again or is that just overkill? Over all the lawn looked a lot fuller in the fall. Would you do a video on how to water, fertilize, and weed control on a lawn that was just seeded in the fall?

Spring seeding can be successful, but in my experience, it's better to wait until fall. The results are definitely better. I can also say from experience that proper turf maintenance can go a long way in helping compete with weeds. I have seen a pretty dramatic decline in Wild Violet, Creeping Charlie, and crabgrass over the past 2-3 years and have not used any pre or post- emergents. Can't wait for lawn season 2022!

Wild Violet and Creeping Charlie showed up out of nowhere in my neighborhood last year. Nobody knew what it was or where it came from. I spent the entire Summer and Fall trying to get it under control. Ironically, the weeds that used to be a problem (Dandelion and Crab Grass) were almost non existent. I think I'll wait until the Fall to overseed now... I'm still torn between the two options tho!?!?

@@ryanknorrlawncare like if you were overseeding in the spring and you used tenacity as pre-em everywhere, then hit the edges of the lawn where crabgrass pressure may be higher (i.e. driveway and sidewalk edges) with prodiamine. Top dress first, seed and then apply fertilizer. It insures that the seed and fertilizer is evenly distributed. The process of raking out the top soil will move the seed and fertilizer into clusters and you will have uneven grass growth. I use a garden weasel to work the seed into the topsoil as the last step. Works well for my small lawn.

I live in the mid-west, so the temps dropped low this week. When the temperatures rise, is it ok to apply a liquid post emergent herbicide to the entire lawn? Or, do I spot treat the weeds? The broadleaf weeds, and other weeds, are starting to appear-especially where the grass meets the concrete.

Things have greened up significantly now, but I again have a ton of weeds. May I ask your advise on what I should be using in late Summer to early Fall to not necessarily rid the weeds this Fall, but to prepare for a strong start weed-free in the Spring? I still have a lot of dead spots with packed down dead grass from the drought, so I imagine I'll want to rake those spots up and re-seed, but it's likely too late in the season, I'd imagine. If you just seed in the spring and don't use pre-emerge you will wind up with crabgrass in any area the seed doesn't take, and there will be such areas. I go with spot-seeding any small bare spots in the spring and just try to avoid those spots with the pre emerge. If you accidentally hit those spots and the seeds are inhibited, you are no worse off than you were. Then do your major reseeding in the fall.

I need advice for my lawn situation. Moved into a new house last summer just outside chicago. I attempted to overseed at the beginning of September and did not get great results. I believe it was a fairly dry year in the region so guessing that is partially why. However, I watered frequently and the seed just did not germinate. Now going into the spring, is there hope that the previously laid seed will germinate? If so I probably would not want to do pre-emergent. And found even add a little more overseed.

Not likely it will have been sitting there that whole time and germinate in spring, unfortunately.

Great information Ryan! My daughter’s yard is a disaster, It’s never been maintained and is really rough (deep divots, bald spots and plenty of weeds: probably 60:40 weed to grass). Primarily the weeds are dandelions and crab grass and some other creeper that I don’t know. How would you tackle this? My first thoughts would be to scalp the lawn, level it (sand/top soil), then seed. Or should I take the long game approach and try to kill the entire surface and start afterwards? In northern Ontario, we can’t use herbicides like Tenacity. What would you recommend?

What happens if you drop pre-enmergent... but instead of just putting down seed... you pre germinate the lawn seed and drop it with miligrant? In otherwords.. if the seed has germinated and you drop it.. will it survive lawn treated with a pre-emergent weed killer?

This is a problem I have. I have two shelties and a yellow lab. We keep them out of the front which looks great. But our back is always a battle. Are lab eats poop so we trample the yard in the winter to pick it all up. So I always have damage come spring. So I'm crossing my fingers and not using a pre emergent so I can repair. Such a battle with those guys. We water their pee spots and it's still not enough.

QUESTION: If you did a full renovation last fall and you're concerned with using prodiamine due to the root development issues, could you not just use tenacity as a pre emergent? maybe do 2 rounds 30 days apart to get through into the summer? Then hit it with prodiamine come fall?
@paulanderson4985
@paulanderson4985 2 жыл бұрын
According to what I heard Ryan say, yes you could use tenacity early in the spring and a second round if necessary. Then overseed in the fall. Didn't think prodiamine is recommended or necessary for fall as temps are declining and crabgrass needs warmer temps. You would be using contact or systemic weed killers in fall after the young grasses have matured and can handle chems... At least that's what I'm getting out of the vid.
@paulanderson4985
@paulanderson4985 2 жыл бұрын
In other words...tenacity and seed in spring, OR prodiamine in spring and overseed in fall... I'm going with spring seeding with tenacity. Hopefully, I can get a quick thick lawn that will overtake the early summer crabgrass intrusion.

You can use it but it won't have the same kind of effect as prodiamine does in terms of creating a barrier in the soil that lasts for months and is extremely effective when applied correctly and watered in. That's the downside but as I mentioned, post emergent control works well if you don't let the weeds get out of hand early summer.

I did a lawn reno last fall with 100% KBG. Will the spreading really begin to take off in the spring with regular feedings? I'm trying to figure out whether I want to overseed or use a pre emergent. It isn't very thick yet, and there are several areas with minimal grass due to washouts.

I over-seeded in the fall in mid to late September here in Kansas, the weather turned quick and there are several areas I’m a little worried about. I have been wondering if I should spray pre-emergent or not. I’m thinking about putting down some more seed, especially in the areas that look thin, and spraying pre-emergent on the ditches and edges of the lawn where the crab grass and sandbur pressure was last summer. Should I put tenacity down for the rest of the lawn and overseed a week or two later? Or vice versa?

I’m just trying to keep the pup safe. I go beyond the recommended time frame of 4-6 hours. I usually wait 48 hours before I let the pups back on the lawn. Just looking for people’s experience with tenacity and dogs. Thanks.
