I was not a very good shot with my previous o/u, game shooting gun I was average, however I decided to take up clay shooting so purchased a second hand mk38 trap that had had comb riser fitted and bored out for a set of tegue chokes which I now shoot half/half the result is a transformation in my shooting and more enjoyment all round. My previous gun was a very light Italian gun which I could throw all over the sky and stop my swing, however the mk38 soon put a stop to that and my shooting became more consistent.

MK38 G5 30" is my gun for all purposes. Interestingly, it is labelled as a 'Sporter/Sporting' but it has the beavertail fore-end, Teague multichoke and it is slightly higher in the comb - not full trap or full sporting geometry. This is how it came from the factory and you see them every now and then in shops and online etc (made in 2017). It shoots more like a trap gun. The weight controls the swing on the clays and the G5 wood and engraving looks good on the peg during game season. I did have a Browning 525 sporter for a while, but I couldn't get used to shooting things flatter with the lower comb - it made my shooting become very inconsistent. I mount the gun as I see the target and I find with a trap gun, you can get away with an imperfect mount 8/10 times. With the sporter, I found you have to have your mount fully dialled and you need to be properly hunkered down into the gun. Otherwise, you're missing over the top. I'm a larger-built chap so I don't notice the weight and the chunkier style of a trap gun fits me well off the shelf - especially Miroku. Sporters tend to be slimmer so slighter more average-build guys prefer a sporter. Interestingly I have a 20-bore sporter in the cabinet and that shoots totally different again! Humans are unique and finding the gun to match is even more so! A very good video and hits the key differences on the nose.

You said "You can bore the chokes out and a lot of people like to shoot full and full". Considering that the Mk38 trap comes as 3/4 and full as standard then you will have a job turning it into full and full - unless you have it multichoked.

The best round of sporting I ever shot was with a trap gun. I took a lot of heat hearing comments like I was shooting a stove pipe. It was a Remington 1100 Classic Trap.

In my opinion it's 90% skill and 10% gun I use a 50 year old remington 870 wingmaster and I shoot better than most people I know on my trap team with actual trap oriented guns fitted to their liking.

@@yeboidustin8725You're absolutely right about that, I've just started shooting trap, my brother got me into it and I love it. Regardless of what gun I use, I know it's all on me regarding skill, practice, and repetition. I am getting better, but I've always had issues with hand/eye coordination.

I love my MK38 Trap. I shoot clays only as a hobby and not too bad average 75-85 plus a B725 of which I love also. I enjoy shooting both guns but must say (Don't let the 725 hear this) I really Love the fuller feel of the trap fore end on the MK38. I have tried Barretta but not a fan of the slender pistol grip. Any ho, good luck to all out there guns are like individuals, we are all different...

You were mustard with the trap gun, but I think the ideal solution, as has already been said, is to buy an MK38 trap gun and get a good gunsmith to convert the stock to a sporting configuration that fits you. Teague chokes, or let out to 1/2 and 1/4 and you have a great sporting gun that will never let you down. I have never liked Blasers and I now know I am not alone.
@buckshotaaa
@buckshotaaa 2 жыл бұрын
You certainly are not alone in your opinion of Blasers, a mate and his wife bought one each (F16) and have had nothing but trouble in the reliabilityl stakes. First off, his blew a choke out the muzzle so he had it chopped and Teagued. Blaser didn't accept liability. Secondly, his wife had the forend wood drop off on a clay shoot. The're only bonded on to the iron. Both guns have suffered from ejector timing malfunction. Blaser come with a 10 year warranty (if you send it off annually for a service at your own expense). They're pretty much sorted now but she has the odd ejector hiccup every so often. Not what one would expect from a four grand gun. German engineering anyone?

You can shoot anything for any discpline, gun fit, mount and swing, practice til perfect is the recipe, not what the gun says, i know guys with very old sxs who never miss, and guys with 20k krieghoff/perazzi whi can't hit a barn door, i myself use 1970s mirokus and can hold my own in any discipline

Back in the day, AJ (Smoker) Smith did okay with his Winchester full/full gun. If you point it in the right place the clay will break. Multi chokes just make it a little easier.

I shoot Kreighoff shotguns and I dont see the type of weigh difference you speek about, my K80 trap special weighs about 8 1/2 lbs whereas my K80 pro sporter a bit over 8 lbs. The major difference as you point out is the higher stock on the trap special. Both carry 32 in barrels and I do have a set of 30 in barrels for the trap special that I use on helice. Longer barrels aid in longer targets whereas the 30 swing a bit faster. I note that you are shooting an F16 Blaser, the F3 models I have shot both in trap and sporting weigh in closer to 8 lbs and have weights to adjust the balance. Your points are well taken, enjoyed it much, thanks

great video! I shot my Browning citori cxt today for sporting and I have not decided if I like better than my game gun for sporting. "extra weight makes me feeI slow to a disadvantage" also used a pattern plate to see actual point of impact. For me it was closer to 50/50 than 70/30 as advertised. (thank goodness)

A twist on the question of shooting trap guns at sporting - I’ve been shooting sporting and trap for nearly two years with a Benelli Rafaello Supersport Performance Shop 12 gauge. My favorite choke is the Briley Light Modified, which shoots a very consistent 60/40 pattern. I’ve plateaued at 70-75 or in sporting so decided to go for the Browning 725 Sporter to have a properly fitted gun and hopefully gain a few more targets. OTOH, the Benelli with Briley LM choke has been a can’t-miss setup for trap and elevated wobble contests. Things look promising so far with the Browning for sporting but I can’t hit diddly squat with it on the trap field, so it looks like I’ll be picking up hulls from the Benelli semi for a while longer in trap contests. But hey, if the name of the game is broken targets then I should stick with what’s getting results, right?

I do use a trap gun for skeet, I dont shoot sporting. I do shoot what we call, great circle. that is the clay thrower is in the centre of a circle and positions are at 10 yard intervals and 40 yard from the thrower. 360 Degrees. The clay speed is approximately 70 to 80 mph..doubles are 3 secs apart. The circle is great fun. the angle of departure can also be changed. All my guns have Adjustable stocks. I could lower the stock but I dont. I know where all my guns shoot. instead of putting the clay on the bead, as in trap, 60-40, I lower the barrel approx 12" under the clay. I use an mx2000 Perazzi, Ceaser Guerini vii Invictus, and a HRT Miroku. I favour the Invictus. I shoot mainly DTL and Olympic Trap.

Comparing MK38 Trap vs Sporter would have been much more useful rather than comparing to a totally different gun. If you want tight chokes like 3/4 or full then you do not need to bore them out as that is what they come out of the factory with! If you want more open chokes that is when you would have them bored out!
@TheVanillaface00

question is why spend to bore them out at all. Just get it threaded for multi-choke or buy a modern gun that comes with multi chokes.

David, I am a rough shooter (very rough) also a rifle shooter. Most of my shotgun work is on pigeon etc & I use a side by side Aya. However, I want to get back into a decent o/u with a bit of weight to it and am looking at a MK38 32" trap gun with extended teague chokes..... (yes I know) not exactly a pigeon gun but the question is - would I be handicapping myself too much if I bought one? Its a great price and good condition. I had a Betinsolli multi years ago and was the worst gun I ever had, didnt even shoot straight.. put me off o/u's for years.
