Grant Woods explains the importance of a doe harvest in preserving the health of your deer herd. The end of summer is a great opportunity to evaluate the quality food available on your property and set the number of does that need to be harvested on your land.

Grant, glad you enjoying the outdoors daily after your transplant. I will be celebrating my 36 year of a kidney transplant at the end of the month here in Michigan. I still love to climb in a tree with my bow every fall. If I can offer any help with dealing with the transplant let me know.

I’ve heard you give variations on this talk many times over the years and it’s always made good scientific and common sense. This video was the most clear and concise explanation of the rationale and judgment required in determining a doe harvest.

Grant great video.....the most important point is START EARLY on your doe harvest, in order to accomplish it. As you said many sportsmen wait for many of the wrong reasons, and do not accomplish their goals. God Bless, Bob

Grant just came to speak at our firehouse. He told us not to wait. Harvest a doe the first day. That gives more food for other deer. This is something I just never thought about.

Grant, thank you for the valuable information about wildlife management. On our property, we have zero issues with harvesting does...horns look good on the wall, but you can't eat'em. You have provided many episodes on characteristics of mature bucks, but very little for mature does. Will you consider an episode for identifying mature does when they are not in a family group but alone in the plot?

I remember farms all around me when I was cutting my hunting teeth in the mid eighties would only grant permission to hunt buck during firearms season. Killing doe was forbidden and archery hunting was frowned upon heavily…

My only problem with those programs Grant, is here in Florida along with those tags, they allow any use of legal means of take and of course everybody hunts with a rifle year round, especially during bow, and now the people on the 3,000 acre hunting lease beside my 40 acres are literally hunting my property line with a rifle during bow season, after after I spend thousands upon thousands of dollars every year, It's a great feeling 😂

That sounds like a problem with neighbors that are illegal - and should should work with a game warden. Illegal hunters hurt all hunters. They are slobs.

Hunting a new spot this year with massive amount of Ag around. Trail cams not showing much for doe count and actually showing more bucks than doe. May leave the buck magnets alone in this location, or when the rut hits, there won't be any doe to date. Another hunting location seems to have an abundance of doe so will concentrate doe harvest there.

On when to harvest the does, I put exactly the opposite limit on myself; I CAN'T bring myself to shoot a doe late! She's already been bred, I'm killing the fawn too! Does go down only Sept and 1st half Oct, in my mind.

I have been managing 320 acres of low/no-fence property for my cousin in East Texas for 6 years now and we had this discussion 4 years ago. We started shooting does with rifles during the open doe season which is essentially the month of November. We are averaging 6-7 does per year in November and have seen an increase in both our doe numbers as well as bucks every year. We are using the Texas Managed Land Deer Program summer trail camera survey to annually track our deer numbers. Last year we had 50 deer using the property, we harvested 8 deer (2 bucks). Last month when I ran the numbers we had 57 deer using the property. We do plant 16 acres (5% of the property) in summer and fall blends (NRCS pasture blend by East Texas Seed Company) to provide high quality nutrition. Don't be concerned about harvesting a doe that may have been bred...as I was a few years ago, you are over thinking it.

Another good management word. Most hunters that don't harvest does, are uneducated or in denial of good game management or simply put, are just lazy!

Does make up the majority of our harvests. We've been letting smaller bucks walk for the last 4-5 years and we are now seeing more mature bucks. Does taste better anyway. Wish more adjoining properties would get over the buck only attitude. Too many small immature bucks are needlessly taken. When theres 25+ does and only one or two spikes and 4 points in the fields, theres a problem.

@@briancourser8901 well it’s really a joke saying that but the DNR for Arkansas does a horrible job managing the public lands. I have personally used information and education from Dr woods and his team from over the years and not only is the deer population and health of my herd better but this year the turkey population has came up along with a record number of quail been sighted and heard by me and my family
