It's pathetic to see pseudo-engineers talking about computer engineering. I'm a computer engineer myself, and I worked for Apple for 6 years. IT IS NOT TRUE that shutting down your Mac will put "SOME STRAIN" on your computer that putting it to sleep will not. First of all, he lacks basic physics knowledge on how computers work and tried to use the meaningless word STRAIN because he can't explain it (it's not a mechanical machine, lol). So he uses "STRAIN" to appear "smart" to his viewers but exposes his vast ignorance on the subject. All the tasks listed as supposedly causing the "strain" are done as pre-checks before constant use afterward. If you're smart, you will understand right there how his claim is total nonsense. Because the very strain is something the computer is undergoing all the time. These are just pre-checks. It doesn't mean if it's not checking them, these "components" won't be used. Quite the contrary, they are constantly used while it's on. And during sleep, a few of those will also be used because some tasks are kept alive. That's precisely the very same strain he was trying to convince people to avoid, which is stupid in the first place. It makes no sense. Sleep mode, using his own theory, will put MORE "STRAIN" on your computer than when it's shut down and turned on at the start of the day. FINAL: Ignore these "Internet Experts" who use "keywords" to make claims without actually explaining the real engineering behind it. It's stupid to even think that these people know anything they're saying. Note: The only reason we recommend users put their computers to sleep is just so our apps can keep track of and update data for users, to improve profits, conversions, and the overall experience. It has nothing to do with hardware or software integrity, "strain" (lmfao), or anything that could damage the computer. It's PHYSICALLY obvious that shutting down will wear the batteries LESS than sleeping in the long run. It's insignificant for most, but it will. It is PHYSICS; you can't WORK AROUND basic physics. It's high-school basic knowledge. You guys should know better. These pseudo-engineers look like those fools who believe that someday we will create "anti-gravity" with high-tech, lol PHYSICS... lol.

Hello sir, just by reading your comment, I see that you know what you are talking about. Personally I'm in the medical field so I do not know much about computers and that is why I wanted to ask you (even though your comment explains it all, but it won't hurt me to double check). Will at the day's end just shutting the lid on my mac not damage it's battery, and also should I close all apps before doing that or it does not matter (by apps, 99% of the time it's the web browser). One last thing, even though I have smart-charging turned on, I noticed that unlike my iPhone, macbook does not make that pause when 80% charged but countinues up to 100%, so should I unplug it when it's close to 80% or leave it to fully charge, I use about 30%-40% battery per day (probably even less) since I use my mac mostly for watching videos or reading/writing text documents. Sorry for the long comment, looking forward to your reply. Best regards!

Hi @@yugoslaviaist. Questions are always good. Closing the lid on Macs won't actually turn off the computer but it will automatically put it to sleep mode. So it will still be running. Only minimum tasks, but it will, and it uses the battery (just a little). That's a fact. However, it will use it. Do a test, use your battery until low power, and put it to sleep. If you leave it for long enough (sometimes less than 2 days, depending on the OS, state, etc) it will totally drain your battery and you won't be able to turn it on without a charger. About the charging to 80%: This 80% is thing is a fallacy today. It's even funny, how these people make up stuff based on old technologies and bad comparison (as if a battery was like a bucket of water lol). Some old batteries used to have this "memory" issue when overcharged. But new devices don't use them anymore. And all OS now manage the charging based on the manufacturer specs. So if your macbook is letting it be charged 100% it's because it's ok. Therefore, it's not necessary to charge Li-ion batteries to only 80%, and doing so is not scientifically supported as a way to extend their lifespan.

I agree with you. You don't even have to be an engineer to realize, sleep mode even though uses the battery less STILL uses the battery as compared to completely shutting it off.

Alanspower, I appretiate that you have a wonderfull carrier at apple with decent tenure, but the whole point beigns with should you turn off the mac or no Macbooks when its put to sleep i will just turn the screen off and and CPU power will be throttled down and uses low power to keep the Push mail services and other Baground apps to be updated which significantly consumes less power since screen is off Its better to Put mac on sleep than you shud it down like old school computes like IMB or PET the arena is different. MacBook OS is an optimised it leans from user usage and delivers the performance accordingly, it is suggested to put to sleep than to shut it down as it takes more power thank a regular sleep/wake stuff as the OS need to load startup and preferences library again and again and the load is put to CPU which draws the power from battery Thanks for Reading Ram

sleep is pointless really we have a screen savers and yes your battery is in use when when its on sleep if your laptop its not pluged in to power but if its pluged into power then you never use the battery, as for the rest of your arugment on programs well you should clear the ram out so shutting down is a good idea it also prevents over nite hackers from getting into yout system while your sleeping. i always shut down my macs and my pcs and my ipads all the time my phone only gets shut down once in awhile because its my phone and closing down your apps that are not in use is a good idea as it frees up ram and processor etc and takes it eaiser on the battery as well and gives you longer battery run time when your on battery time. . a turned off ocmputer does not update by the way .

@sunsun49612 жыл бұрын
Interesting Video! I’ve always wondered if I was doing things right, not sure if this still applies to a MacBook being utilized as a stationary desktop???? I have a 2017 MacBook Pro connected to two monitors (ultra wide + standard) via a KVM switch. I started shutting down the MacBook daily as it fixed two wonky things I’ve noticed started since using as a desktop. 1. When the laptop is in sleep mode for a while and then waken it doesn’t process clamshell mode correctly and the monitor display (as both desktop or standalone laptop) get bad enough to where I have to shutdown/restart 2. When I do use as a reg laptop now (no charger) the battery life is so short, I can maybe only work on it for about 2 1/2 hours before batteries drained While shutting it down daily fixed the first problem, I wonder if it exacerbated the second problem?? I’ve heard that computers have a number of charge cycles b4 battery capacity is decreased, which is why its suggested not to fully shutdown everyday? Either way, in my case it could just be because two monitors is alot of pull for a 2017 MacBook haha! I am going to try your suggestion of not shutting it down for a week to see how it does.I Love my MacBook it runs stronger and longer than any windows computer I've had in the past, want to keep it as long as possible!
@imranfarah62342 жыл бұрын
Honestly I think that the battery life is shorter because when you use your Mac book as a stationary desktop, it is always plugged in. The fact that you left it plugged in for long periods of times (I'm assuming) is maybe what damaged the battery. The fact that you were using it plugged in while it was at 100% for a long time. I also do this on my secondaty gaming laptop (Been doing it for 2 years now) and the battery life is so bad when it's not plugged in. So much that it doesn't last me more than 2 hours before it's dead. I think you're experiencing the same probleme as I am. I would suggest changing the battery if you use this computer a lot when it's unplugged and it's really bothering you. It would fix your problem ;)

@obscvre2 жыл бұрын
M1 macs are basically super-sized iPads, they wake up as soon as you press that power button, just like how the iPhone shows the lock screen when you press the power button, so if you don't turn off your phone every night, you shouldn't do that to your mac. But iMacs and Mac Mini WILL get shut down during a power cut, I know that because I just experienced it last week when we got a power cut and my Mac Mini was immediately off, when the power got back on, I had to manually turn the Mac back on as well
