Don't freak out if you miss a lecture or two, if you're more productive learning the work by yourself, try it that way. A 2-hour lecture in person is completely different than one over the computer screen!

I enjoy learning at my own pace with online lecture, however I feel it’s much harder to catch up if I fall behind or don’t fully understand a concept.

Also Freaking Profs think it's a good idea to squeeze in more content just cause they can ... Most of the time it feels like the Profs are talking at us rather than to us 😪 can't wait for things to go back to normal...

Started skipping 3 days ago and I’ve gotten the most learning and studying done than before! I return in the evening and play the recordings at 1.5-2x whilst writing only KEY info. Then finish my study day by doing practice Q’s. And my scores in PQs are the highest they’ve ever been for me all semester. This has been my experience with medical school lectures. 😊 God bless y’all, friends!

Times are much different now than 9 years ago when I started medical school...I found going to lecture enjoyable and worth my time. I would pre read and have a base understanding, attend lecture, take notes and interact with the lecturer then read the material covered within a couple of days. I also tested myself frequently and would remember funny tidbits from class. I guess after a couple of years, you will know your best learning style.

in class lectures are great because it is actually interactive/ you know they can see you. Which keeps your attention. Online classes are trash.

For you, When it was online I feel more productive I am saying to completely cut out lectures are something Personally, the teachers can talk and talk it ends up not being important and wasting hours of time and learning content to be slow, and I am the type of student who wants to look deeper and connects things What I would do instead is attend some like introduction and following classes will be skipped

exactly my thoughts! lectures are passive learning and I have short attention span. unfortunately at my school (I live in a 3rd world country), attendance is required and is included in the computation of our grades.

Welcome to Italy, where the professor can ask you what insignificant technique was used in '96 by his team for a very marginal research and then give you a mediocre score if you happened to have the audacity of studying from the book and not from his undecryptable lesson

Kharma Medic, you are absolutely inspirational. Every time I finish watching one of your videos individually, I have a sense of encouragement to go open my books that I haven't touched during the past year. Because of you, I was able to complete high school and study in the medical field. As of now, I am studying radiology. Thank you for uploading incredible videos that have changed my life.

Third year psych student here, I haven’t gone to a single lecture these past two years. Profs usually create their lectures based on textbooks. Usually any other additional resources they might use within a lecture are also posted on course websites. I don’t personally learn well by staying in one spot listening to someone speak, you don’t properly retain information through this. I laugh at my classmates who go to lectures and then have to come home and read the chapter along with the lecture notes. While some people work better in a class room environment I just don’t. Learning by myself has always been the best solution for me.

This is probably cool with American textbooks that have polished 23rd edition with bulletpoints etc. But some textbooks in small countries suck and are written like a bad fairytale, so they won’t do as a standalone resource. Often the key info is only at lecture. “But I told you at the lecture which tumor is now 3rd in incidence in this category…”

I'm not in medical school, instead doing biomedical science. My lectures are just videos they post online, the ones that are in-person are workshops/tutorials (basically recaps). And often, they split it into parts. Often, I just listen to them like I listen to a podcast.

The solution is not to quit lectures (Although I agree that self-learning is way better in many ways). I think the solution is on the lecturer themself. They should plan their lecture, make it interesting, engage with the students and try to help them find their inner passion. I believe there is a certain factor in face-to-face lectures that can’t be found else where.

Biggest issue for me is that profs just read information off a power point and add very little. I’ve had exams where profs do not go over a topic but it is on the exam. The best option is to really go over the textbooks themselves, this is what I have done consistently through out my course.

To anyone thinking about skipping lectures, I agree that lectures are hard to focus in, but I would recommend experimenting with this decision. I decided to skip a few lectures and teach myself the material, but I learned the hard way that it was not the best choice because information about a subject is not just shared. For example, information about changes in class schedule or assignments may be discussed in classed. For me, a major assignment was due earlier than planned and I was not able to make it up. Overall, miscommunication can happen and result in issues. AGAIN, I am not against skipping lectures, I also dread being in lectures and find the pace too fast. Key word is EXPERIMENT, everyone's situation is different. Thanks for listening and Happy New Year!

I AGREE WITH HER. HONESTLY, ATTENDING LECTURES FOR 6 HRS STRAIGHT(IN MY CASE) IS NO GOOD(TO SAY THE LEAST), FOR ME AT LEAST. ESPECIALLY IF MOST PROFS. ARE JUST READING THE SLIDES WITHOUT EXPLAINING WHAT THE HECK HE IS TALKING ABOUT AND TALKING SO SLOWLY LIKE 0.5X SPEED. I ALWAYS GET THIS IDEA DURING THE LEC. LIKE DAMN MAN I WISH THEY UPLOADED THIS LEC ON KZbin SO I CAN JUST WATCH IT ON 1.7X SPEED 😂. WITH THAT SAID, LECTURES ARE ESSENTIAL TO GET A HIGH DEGREE IF YOUR PROF. MCQs ARE ALL FROM THE LEC. NOT THE F$%$ THOUSAND PAGES RESOURCE THE COLLEGE GAVE YOU 😅.

Thats the same thing for secondary I get bored We on be on the same thing for weeks is annoying, and i would've covered more content in a given thing Only attend class to ask questions, appolcations, assignments, assessments, and exams. But cant sadly Since most of cour course materials is online And i dont care about attendance it can drop under 80% i dont care I might not be able to go for head prefect, it would be fine which uni would care and dont care about the other subjects i do just the ones i need

I find lectures very low-yield most of the time. A lot of instructors don’t explain well and just read off of the slides. I’d rather watch an online video series that explains the concepts much more clearly and succinctly.

Best going as creates structure and getting my money worth. Paying a lot for that damn degree - these lecturers are paid to lecture. Review online videos in own time and motivate speaking with others are learning from small group. Isolation not best
@Jewao
@Jewao 2 жыл бұрын
To me time is money. If a prof is going to base their lecture off certain textbook chapters (from experience) when I’m literally going to have to re read anyway to create notes and reviews for exams then I’ll probably skip. I usually combine their lecture notes and the specific chapter for that week. Of course it does depend on which type of class, if you have a formula heavy focused class such as a maths course I would go (personally cannot self teach myself maths). Isolation to you might not be the best but going to lectures has never really benefited me.

Honestly me too, I barley attend my lecture yet I'm one of the highest achievers in my course. Lectures are too long, boring and you don't actively learn. All my courses have slides and notes that I could refer to and then questions to solve. So why attend.

if your mind goes elsewhere or someplace else during a time when you know you should really concentrate, then seriously the problem is with you. In the starting when you said this is going to be a very controversial statement, I think you were dead right coz this opinion will highly be disagreed with, by a LOT of people. And just a humble opinion passing by, don't give people a fake sense of relief and fake consolation/validation for habits which everyone knows should and MUST be changed. Stop putting people in their silly own comfort zone and try and 'normalIZE' literally everything/any problem which you face. Problems that occur as a result of lack of discipline and self conduct, HAS to be changed rather than just sitting back and giving a fake sense of satisfaction for the lack of grit and determination you have of changing those habits. SAY YES to being UNCOMFORTABLE. This will drive you to overcome situations that you never thought you could. trust me on this and take it as a piece of advice from me, for your own good.
@Jewao
@Jewao 2 жыл бұрын
There’s something called being unique and different. The problem is everyone is different. It’s funny because your opinion will also be heavily disagreed with. Individuals find what works for them. Lectures are forced upon individuals as a social norm, but you have cases where individuals actually perform better in isolation and with self teaching methods. If you’re going to criticize people who don’t attend lectures and revolve your whole argument about grit and determination/ “fake sense of satisfaction” then you just look extremely silly. I can bet you anything that individuals who have never attended a single lecture have had higher GPAs than you in your exact discipline. You also dismiss the fact that alot of individuals have attention deficit disorders, such as ADHD which are common. You’re creating such a stupid argument just because someone else is doing something that works for them. Sorry not everyone wants to here a prof talk about their slides that you’re going to have to review later on which are all based on textbook chapters that you’re also going to have to review later on. Time is money my friend, everyone is different to how they go about things. This has nothing to do with grit, everyone process differently, if you like lectures so much go, but me and a lot of other individuals agree with the context of this video.
