I started my shop in the 1980's rent can be the beast that kills you. Location of a repair shop isn't as critical as a retail shop. When leaving business cards, never leave over 4 or 5. If there is a stack of cards people won't take them figuring no one else has. Word of mouth and business cards brought me more customers than any other type of advertisement. If you can get a counter person it will help the tech immensely as he won't have to break his train of thought on the 5-6 systems he's working on to answer the phone or tend to customers. This last one will vastly increase the number of units finished per day. Put up a sign that says "Any device left here over 60 days from our last contact with you shall be disposed of". This keeps scammers who bring in yard sale junk from leaving it and then coming back after six months of no contact claiming they left you a "Top of the line system"...

Bro started my shop back in June, I lucked up and got a store front rent free through my gf's dad. I see its been a while since you've made a video but like so far they've all been really helpful. My 2 biggest problems right now are: I have to close my shop when I do a remote which is like how I make most of my money, and building my customer base enough so that I make money consistently. If you make another video anytime soon maybe you can shed some light on what you would do.

Ill try to make a video regarding how we take care of this problem at the shop this weekend. I hadn't uploaded since my wife and myself had covid but thankfully we are all well and I will resume more videos soon.

Buying my first company now for 7k the guy has a place and I get all the equipment in there. A lot of it older but he resells it and parts it out on ebay. I’ll get all of his contacts and he proved the business already has a customer base that should cover the $750 rent for the location. This is a huge leap of faith for me so I been looking up videos. My question would be What work do you turn away or what repairs are you wary of doing

Wow man that sounds great! Hope everything transfers over smoothly and you can make that existing business even better! As far as repairs you should stay away from in my opinion at least in the first years or so while you get settled in would be: 1. Repairs that have been previously worked on by other shops, the main reason for that is because some of these devices don't even boot up or something have underlying issues that the owner may try to make you liable for. 2. Would be any liquid damage repairs unless you have the expertise and the equipment to perform them, I would suggest you have a fee for the attempt to fix or inspect liquid damage devices because they may not be salvageable even after you already put in a couple hours to try to get it to work. 3 Would be repairs where the part for the repair has a high cost. I would definitely try to avoid these whenever possible or let the customer know that they are liable for the part whether the repair is successful or not otherwise you might end up getting stuck with a part you may not have a use for. Well that all for now and good luck with your new business!

If you are a one man or tech shop don't go out on calls during business hours. Do in store repairs only during business hours. When you go out on a call you'll miss drop ins that might never come back and calls from what might be new customers. If you have another person to work the front then it is not a problem. I'm not sure how much I would pay for some one else's shop, because in repair shops your reputation ***IS*** the business.

Do you have any advice for getting broken laptops from ebay and repair them and then sell them ? Just as a side hustle

why would you pay somebody to fix the computer when you can Google most problems and on top of that it's cheaper to build a new pc yourself or buy a new one then pay somebody to fix your old one I'll pass

even though it may not be that hard to build your own computer, someone who has never built a computer may be afraid of breaking something completely such as like cpu pins people may get anxiety over that. Some people may simply just not want to do it. pc repair/building even though not that hard will still be a service in demand no matter what due to people being afraid or not knowing its that easy, or simply would rather watch someone build for them or to support someone who needs the money there are many reasons why. As well as older people who would need help due to people growing up now with computers and easier to figure out demand may go down a bit but it will still be there. If they got thr money you cant tell them what they cant do with it
