A HUGE thing that is a major impact on my business is time in the dump line. 75% of the time our dump lines are 2+ hours per load. We will have at least one day a week where we will average 5+ hours waiting in line per load. If you think a town ordinance is difficult to overcome, try landfills and transfer stations that close for 2 or 3 days randomly because we are at "executable capacity". It is not uncommon to wait 6 hours in a dump line, just to have an employee walk up and say, "Sorry, we are closing for the day,. You can't dump." You must know if that is a common situation in your area and if so, how are you going to overcome it.

Man, that's awful. I am lucky that my local dump is efficient and fast. I rarely wait more than 5 minutes in a line if there is a line at all to dump. Yes, my rates here in CA are $95.50 per ton (general household trash) but that gets passed on to the customer. I am lucky I can go to the dump and come back within 30 minutes to an hour.

As a retired dumpster business, I can tell you be prepared to work. There’s a lot of sweat, equity and payoffs, but it’s not a 9-to-5 job. You have to figure at least 12 hours per day when you figure out how many hours you’re gonna put into it versus what you’re going to make you might be alarmed, and then there are repairs and maintenance costs, which are always going to happen such as engine transmission. Major components, do break and tires flat tires are an evitable. You have to also ask yourself how much other competition there is in the area. The problem in the industry is really parts. I don’t recommend getting any thing new. Get something older like an older freight liner from the 90s or something from the early 2000s good luck.

Great video man! I'm looking to get started in the business with a buddy by starting small as a side hustle and scaling the business as it grows. I'm also here in Texas, DFW area to be exact. My buddy works in heavy equipment rental so I feel like we can use that as a foot in door approach to finding clients as we grow the business. Really appreciate your videos and the knowledge you share. 1 comment is that Texas does have different landfill types - type1s usually take mose everything except hazardous material and type 4 is only C&D so no food products or chemicals. I work in a type 4 and want to get into the business. Is there a better time of year to get the best tax advantages? Best of luck with your continuing success.

Truth is, I think you would want lean towards getting a setup that is most common in your area in case you ever need a backup or other company to help pull your cans if you are broken down. Appreciate the watch!

Do you know how much of your business is booked through the software vs. through phone contact? With phone contact, do you have someone dedicated to just manning phone calls?

I no longer use Docket, however, they are a great option. I currently use DRS and their software is exceptional and exactly what I needed to take my business to the next level. I literally had 2 online bookings just yesterday. Online bookings is essential and is becoming more and more common now a days. I would say about 20% of bookings are done online vs over the phone imo.

I have used only dumpster money to grow the dumpster business. I keep businesses funded separately and did take some debt for the roll off trailer but paid it off in a few months. Now I have a loan on the Mack.

If you start a dumpster rental business today you're gonna be in competition with people who spent a lot less money on dumpsters and trucks. Not to mention the economy slowing down which means construction will slow down. In the one comment I saw or he said he and a buddy were going to do this, I'll tell you that is a huge mistake As partnerships don't work. If you don't believe me on that 1 just go and try and find 2 happy partners still in business.

40’s are huge. I doubt you’ll find one that will haul up to 40’s. I’ve seen 30’s. Texas Pride sells them. You’re gonna need likely a triple axle and definitely a CDL and DOT.
