When building a dumpster business, it can be a delicate balance! Not only am I running a dumpster business, but I am also heavily invested in real estate. So I'm spreading myself too thin! It's time for me to focus.
I have decided I need to double down on the dumpster business and possibly expand my fleet instead of running on such lean inventory!
Business is obviously growing quickly! It's just a bummer that the demand is outpacing our capacity for available dumpsters.
So now I want to you expand my fleet of dumpsters, hire more drivers, and dive deeper into junk removal to keep up with the demand. 💪🚚
Now I just have to decide if I want to expand with my existing equipment, including the MAXXD Dumpsters and trailers, or move to something else entirely!
Things to consider are what type of diesel truck, if I want to have a fleet of small under CDL trucks, multiple large trucks, fuel mileage, insurance, payroll, competition locally, dump prices. It's a lot to consider, and every day I drag my feet from growing, I'm leaving money on the table.

So I've owned a roofing company for 30 years. We do allot of remodeling as well as rentals, storage facilities and a few other businesses. About 20 years ago a guy in our town started marketing 6 and 10 yard boxes to contractors and killed it! Still is! He used an F350 hook truck. What made it soo nice was not just small boxes which is all guys need for a bathroom remodel or a homeowner cleaning out their garage but he got a premium per ton and never broke driveways. 6 wheeler trucks with a 20 yard box full of shingles are driveway killers. We us dump trailers now just for that reason. I would get some small boxes so you can get more money per ton, smaller boxes take less yard space...

I remember when I started making dumpster videos and people told me I didn't need a roll off dumpster trailer. They said "just buy a cargo trailer!" They said "just use dump trailers!" I didn't care. Then they said "you should get a roll off truck!" Now they say "I cant believe you don't have a hooklift and bigger cans" Stick to what works for you and don't get caught up in the new so called "FADS". Get more dumpsters if you feel it is the right move and keep making money. Standard rail trailer is the only thing I would reccomend if you were to change anything. I would not buy the MaxD roll off truck if you want to upgrade... It will not change your business in any way IMO...If you want to upgrade go standard rail or just keep on trucking with what you got. I watch your videos all the time and I rarely comment but this is my 2 cents and who cares what other people say YOU need. You know better than anyone else. Keep up the good work! I am watching and think you are doing great

What you said at the end is the summary of your whole speech the fact that if there's issue with a truck you can always rent a truck and keep moving the trailers. When the lift unit is part of the truck you're screwed with a breakdown not only that the hook lift is the absolute worst roll-off system built over 20 cubic yards everything you were doing is under 20 yd you best bet is to stick with the roloffs trailers and moving weird pains twelves and tens you can accommodate anyone. The leaner you stay the better and cram as many container runs daily as you can with one truck keep your margins High you should be focusing on purchasing a Reload garbage truck with a winch and get as much trash in one load to take the dump as possible and use the roloffs as a complement to the rear load business. Roloffs are a loser anytime you have to handle the trash twice you're already losing money and if you're leaving container for more than a week at a location you're losing money

@rollingops if you ever decide to go to a system that is mounted on a truck chassis pay attention to the weight of the different types of systems. A hook lift subframe weight will decrease the actual weight of GVWR of the chassis that it's mounted to. A system that I used to deal with is SWITCH N Go which is the same concept as your trailers but a bit different. At the end of the day man you do you and what is best for you, for your family, and your company.

I have watched your channel from the very beginning, I actually found you through your buddy Kyle and you had a lot to do with me getting into the business. I have been In business for almost 2 years and I still look for your uploaded videos daily. I started out with 10 U-Dump dumpsters and actually grew to 20 very fast. I had a trailer set up and I had a ram 5500 with a bed for my dumpsters kinda like you showed. I just made the change about a month and a half ago we switched to hook lift and I’ll be honest I am absolutely satisfied. It’s was a hard decision leading up to actually doing it but it was one that I will forever be happy with. I see a few things that you could honestly probably benefit from even the hauling of your equipment. I have had the ram with the bed and it was nice but it does has down falls. I’d be more the happy to share with you what I have learned and some of my deciding factors as it’s something I have done very recent.

Hey man! You have been a huge help in my business. I was in your shoes about 3 months ago. I have 12 Max d cans and 2 trailers. And I was deciding on going all in and keep buying more Maxx d bins. It took me awhile to make up my mind. But I decided it was not the best move to expend my business. There are lots of factors that made me go to hook truck. Things like Bin price, Mpg,Efficiency is huge, and I do have to say I am a firm believer, in the credibility factor it brings a business in my market. It was long nights of figuring out how to make the move and float my equipment while running new setup. Keep killing it. Everyone’s markets are different and Maxx D makes a good system and I was truly going to look into the new truck bed system and even build a custom one. But the truck just does not have the value a hook truck has. Excited to meet you down in Texas. Your videos have always made me want to do better everyday!

Hook lifts are better for speed and space. You can get into tighter spots. I checked your website. I might look at changing your pricing structure. You charge a one day rate then do a 2-3 and 4-7 day schedule. This is basically giving days away. For example as soon as you give a range for one price you are losing money. With 4-7 days a customer gets three days free. Consider the daily rate then add a fee per additional day. Customers will tend to keep the can longer than they really need if it is free. Do you charge cancellation fees, driveway damage insurance (use something like Roliskates for a fee), specialty items etc.? To pick up extra business offer a two dumpster deal. Sell to contractors who would benefit with two cans on site instead of one big one. Many advantages here. Allows you to compete with the bigger guys and actually provide a more flexible and efficient solution for the client. If worse came to worse would you "rent" cans from another provider? As long as you don't lose money may ne worthwhile to keep client happy. Get the smaller concrete cans for concrete, bricks and dirt. As long as you don't allow them to round over the top of rails you would be good. No concrete washouts though.

The hook dumpsters are 1/2 the price of roll off dumpsters and much heavier built. I would buy a few more Maxxd dumpsters to hold you over and then get whatever long term set up you actually want when you’re ready. Get one truck and 3 bins, still have your trailer and those bins, continue to buy new bins and more trucks as you go. My mind is always thinking about all the options, making the best decision, learning about the entire market just like you. We brought home a 2024 freighliner grapple truck last night. Been researching for months. Whatever the truck is that will take you to that next level long term, then that’s the truck for you. Again I would just buy a few more dumpsters until you’ve for sure decided what that next expansion step is. Good luck as always!

So for the chains I'd do a skid steer the way you do it. On the mini I run my chains down the side of the trailer and hook in the holes on the blade and the tie down points by the final drives that way I don't have to climb on the trailer and I get the 4 corners. On the truck topic, I bet max d is going the switch n go way and that's the way I'd go. You could have one truck that could move dumpsters, put a flat bed on, put a dump bed on for stone and switch n go has little box truck beds that you could use like pods. So yea I'd go with the truck and hopefully max d follows switch n go and makes changeable beds.

Thanks for the inspiring content, I have a couple thoughts, first off the truck looks like a great option when it becomes available, I would consider keeping both of your trailers, because the truck won't likely be able to handle the loads that you have picked up in previous videos. I think it makes sense to keep the current set up you have if you can and add to the fleet once that maxxd truck is available, you can use it to focus on the 24 hour 8-16 yd bin rental market. My second thought is this, have you considered picking up 3 or 4 dumpsters to leave at the yard and "selectively" dumping and sorting on site? I would think building in a mini-transfer station would be low cost to you with the machinery you have available and it comes with the rewards of minimizing trips to the dump, reducing fuel and dumping costs, keeping more money in your business, and recycling even more metal than you already are. Obviously you wouldn't want to dump every bin in the yard because of the contents, so key word being selective.
@rollingops
@rollingops 8 ай бұрын
Yes, yes and yes! I probably will keep both trailers. Or sell one to get a newer one. I like having them, especially if my employees are capable of using them. I want to upgrade one to heavier axles and an auto tarp. Possssibly, even a bumper pull, to pull behind a truck with a dumpster loaded on the bed. We have been dragging the project out, but there is an active attempt to build a loading ramp. And with slow seasson approaching. I plan on tackling that, soon enough! Thanks for watching man!

Hey Clayton, it sounds like a great idea to get maybe 5 more dumpsters and possibly another trailer setup, but that being said, if you're running 90 dumpsters a month with your customers and that's figuring you're using 10 dumpsters to hit about 60 deliveries a month now, if you have 15 dumpsters, then 90 customer deliveries might be your new normal, so in your experience, does that mean you need another trailer and/or another part time or full time driver? What are your plans for expanding the tractors down the road too, because you seem like you rent those out consistently as well, so eventually, maybe 3 tractors of each variety, 3 skids and 3 excavators? Then you've got your storage to get going on and that big dump truck restoration or project, so no lack of things to do and places to tuck your money for reinvesting! All the best Clayton, keep hustling my friend and really enjoying the channel and your successes! Brian

I’m in your same boat. 12 cans, 1 trailer. 60-75 rentals a month. Looking to expand but new equipment will be a under 26k truck. I’ll keep the trailer as emergency back up and/or overflow. I’m going to get 12 more cans with the new truck. Hoping to double the rentals per month. Unfortunately I have to turn away or sub out dumpsters each month.

I'm in the business here in Dallas and our market thrives on the 30 yrds for construction sites. You have your market with the smaller containers and you should continue to use them. Your biggest factor is distance to the landfill so gas is going to be your biggest cost not to mention the rate of return on a larger truck with an even larger cost to operate. Invest into more smaller containers like you have and get to where you dont have to turn away customers because you dont have inventory. Your rate of return for paying off your containers is going to be quick. You will be on the plus side and making more money as well as having tax write off for equipment purchase. Its a good problem to have. I would look into getting a better deal on your containers by agreeing to purchase more in the future in return. Worth looking into. Good luck!

@@rollingops I see you do a little bit of everything as well. If it works for you great and if you are losing money get rid of it or figure out a better price point to make money. Might be worth it to find a staging yard closer to the landfill to cut your drive time potentially especially if you have to drive all the way back just to grab another can. Staging yards can also help when you need to do a delivery or change size containers because you have a different one on your back. Not sure if you are doing everything solo but looks like you could use another driver or two and really get things moving.

@richardpope71 this is hilarious because I just got off the phone with a landfill I don't usually use and they are talking about cutting their price in half. It won't change what I'm already paying somewhere else. But it does change the distance I will travel within certain radius. Then we got on the topic of them dropping 40 yarders for us to use on a transfer ramp. So yea, this is exactly the direction I'm looking at. 👌

Man that was a quick change of direction… I personally think this does work for your situation since you have the cans already. Keep in mind that you still need the 5500’s though. So really the difference is not having to sell your 10 cans… I think for a larger fleet it makes sense. Secondly, STOP INVESTING ALL YOUR CASH into RE… The switch and go system will definitely allow you to hire people a bit easier too.. The only thing hook has on this model is pulling on an angle…. I personally think the trailer setup is not as professional.. Let me explain. About 7 years ago I started a carpet cleaning side business… I did the moveable plugin kind not a truck mount… After the first job I understood why the pros used the truck mount!! Also customers would look at me and even say “is your main vacuum down”? You say they don’t care but they definitely notice..

Definitely tough to sell your stuff to only be taking a step back and have less inventory. How much are maxx-D dumpsters? I always thought there are comparable in prices. You sell 10 of those and would have 8 standard rail dumpsters? I had a roll-off trailer and went to a hooklift and its just so much better, everyone says that as well. I personally found a good deal on an old hooklift, if i was to buy a newer hooklift, (they cost alot) I probably would have stayed with the rolloff trailer. Idk man. Can get some more affordable cable pull trucks, dont necessarily have to get a hooklift. The trailer setup is definitely a pain in the ass haha

But having a trailer makes it easier to switch out trucks if one brakes down. I would say keep the truck and trailer set up and get more dumpster. Then in the future get the truck. Have the ability to get clients without turning them away.

As for the customer doesn’t matter. I disagree. People judge. We all do. It makes a difference. I hear comments all the time. The question is, do you care or not. You should read the DOT requirements for securing equipment. First 10 ft you need 2 binders straps or chains under 10K over 10K only chains and once you hit 10.1 ft you need a third binder. And even though the bucket is attached to the machine you still need a fourth binder to secure the bucket. - Then deep in the DOT requirements there's a chance they can stick you with not having 4 point securement on heavy equipment so that would be the fifth binder, that would be needed. Technically that should be over 10K but do you really want to fight that out in a courtroom. If you get cited or worse got in an accident and there was a serious injury. Just better to 4 point the corners and secure the buckets. -does not matter if it's an excavator or a skid steer (CTL) Since you work In the industry you should really know the rules.
